Assessing the risk from mycotoxins for the organic food chain: results from Organic HACCP-project and other research Organic Eprints
Wyss, Gabriela.
Introduction: Mycotoxins are toxic compounds produced by the secondary metabolism of toxic moulds in the Aspergillus, Penicillium and Fusarium genera occurring in food commodities and foodstuffs. The range and potency of mycotoxins make this group of naturally occurring toxins an ongoing animal health hazard and a constant risk for contamination of the food supply. Mycotoxicoses are diseases caused by exposure to foods or feeds contaminated with mycotoxins. Mycotoxins exhibit a variety of biological effects in animals, such as liver and kidney toxicity, central nervous system effects or estrogenic effects. There are differences between animals with regard to the susceptibility towards different mycotoxins. Poultry secrete mycotoxins relatively fast...

Welfare of organic poultry Organic Eprints
Zeltner, Esther; Maurer, Veronika.
Organic poultry production has substantially increased in the last few years. On organic farms, welfare of poultry is enhanced due to enriched housing conditions as access to a free range area. This may reduce feather pecking and keep the health status at least on the same level as on conventional farms. However, welfare of organic poultry may be further improved if: (a) laying hens are already reared in enriched systems that are close to the systems in the layer house, (b) a frequent and even use of the run, (c) selection of suitable genotypes especially in relation to digestive ability, and (d) effective prevention and control of parasites.

Die befallsabhängige Schorfbekämpfung im Bio-Anbau Organic Eprints
Triloff, Peter.

Bender, Sophia; Ude, Gracia; Georg, Heiko; Weißmann, Friedrich; Aulrich, Karen; Rahmann, Gerold.
In contrast to the increasing demand for dairy goat products in Germany, a market for goat kid meat as a related product is more or less non-existing. Thus, the objective of our study was to develop a concept for organic goat kid meat production for dairy goat farms. In collaboration with a wholesaler, organic dairy goat farmers and marketing research the experimental part of our study was to find out if cross-breeding of meat-goats could improve meat quality and performance of fattening goat kids together with other factors like concentrate ratio of the diet, housing system as well as raising strategy. First results indicate that a low input level of concentrates of 10 % of total dry matter intake per goat kid and year is not sufficient to meet the...

Production of Innovations within Farmer–Researcher Associations Applying Transdisciplinary Research Principles Organic Eprints
Nicolay, Gian L.; Fliessbach, Andreas.
Small-scale farmers in sub-Saharan West Africa depend heavily on local resources and local knowledge. Science-based knowledge is likely to aid decision-making in complex situations. In this presentation, we highlight a FiBL-coordinated research partnership between three national producer organisations and national agriculture research bodies in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Benin. The partnership seeks to compare conventional, GMObased, and organic cotton systems as regards food security and climate change.

Safety and Efficacy of Mistletoe extract (Viscum album) Iscador(R) P in Equine Sarcoid Organic Eprints
Clottu, Ophélie; Klocke, Peter; Spranger, Joerg; Burger, Dominik; Werner, Michael; Ramos, Mac; Straub, Reto; von Tscharner, Claudia; Gerber, Vinzenz.
Equine Sarcoid (ES), a semi malignant skin tumour, is the most common neoplasia of horses (Marti et al.1993). There is no generally effective single treatment existing and the recurrence rate is high (Martens et al.2001). Furthermore as a treatment obstacle, Sarcoids tend to occur as multi-focal tumours or can be found in critical locations (peri-ocular) where success of surgical interventions is very limited (Carstanjen et al.1997). Due to encouraging results in human medicine and small animals practice after adjuvant cancer treatment by mistletoe extracts (Biegel et al.2007) the viscum therapy could hypothetically fill a therapy gap for equine tumour diseases as well. Hence, goal of this clinical trial was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of Viscum...

Control of pollen beetle in organic farming with plant protecting agents Organic Eprints
Humphrys, Clay; Jossi, Werner.
Pollen beetle (Meligethes spp.) is a major yield-limiting factor in organic oilseed production. Currently there are no effective methods available to control this beetle in organic agriculture. From 2006 to 2008 work was carried out at Agroscope ARTReckenholz to find suitable organically compatible plant protecting agents which are effective against the beetle. A partial reduction in beetle infestation was observed when liquid manure, lavender oil and rapeseed oil was applied. Dusting agents such as ash and substances containing silicate (stone meal) were very efficient, almost completely removing the beetle after application. However, beetle infestation increased again after one or two days following application. Dusting substances in combination...

Lucerne (Medicago sativa) or grass-clover as cut-and-carry fertilizers in organic agriculture Organic Eprints
Burgt, Geert-Jan H.M.; Eekeren, N. van; Scholberg, Johannes; Koopmans, Chris.
On-farm nitrogen fixation is a driving force in organic agriculture. The efficiency with which this nitrogen is used can be increased by using lucerne (Medicago sativa) or grass-clover directly as sources of fertilizer on arable land: cut-and-carry fertilizers. In two arable crops, the use of lucerne and grass-clover as fertilizers was compared with the use of poultry manure and slurry. The nitrogen-use efficiency at crop level was comparable or better for the cut-andcarry fertilizers as compared to the animal manures. The relative P and K content of these fertilizers came closer to the crop demand than that of the poultry manure. Crop yields were comparable or better when using lucerne or grass-clover as fertilizer. It is concluded that cutand-carry...

Koproduktion von Wissen in der Entwicklung des Biolandbaus - Einflüsse von Marginalisierung, Anerkennung und Markt Organic Eprints
Aeberhard, Andrea; Rist, PD Dr. Stephan.
The empirical analysis of the historical development of transdisciplinary co-production of knowledge (CPK) in organic agriculture (OA) in Switzerland has revealed three distinct phases. The initial phase shows various characteristics of transdisciplinary CPK and a high importance of experiential knowledge. The 2nd and 3rd phases involve an in-creasing segregation of farmers’, extension agents’, and scientists’ knowledge, caused by internal and external impacts, i.e. foundation of independent research institutions, changes in agriculture policy, and new market strategies. These developments strikingly represent an ambiguous trend: the growing societal and political recognition of OA and the increasing market, which are positive achievements, are...

Gypsum-based management practices to prevent phosphorus transportation Organic Eprints
Pietola, Liisa.
Phosphogypsum from Siilinjärvi plant were tested in soil incubation-leaching-studies(I), and in liquid pig manure treatment (II) in farm pit. In soil columns, gypsum additions significantly reduced erodibility and ortho-P concentrations in the leaching water. In the pig manure test, the gypsum-based precipitate fractionated phosphorus to P-rich sediment and to almost P-free upper part. Upper low-P fraction represented 2/3 of the total manure volume.

Crop diversification in the future cropping systems Organic Eprints
Keskitalo, Marjo; Mäkinen, Taina.
According to the results, the selected special crops may attract pollinators such as honeybees and flower flies more than conventionally cultivated crops. Also, the number of weed species among special crops may be higher than the number of weeds identified among barley and timothy. The high amount of dry weight and weed species among the special crops may be due to the challenges of herbicide treatments. These results may be used when strategies for more diversified cropping systems, where selected special crops could be cultivated as a rotation with conventionally corps, are planned.

Rapsanbau im ökologischen Landbau – Auswirkungen von Vorfrucht, Reihen-abstand und Untersaat mit Weißklee auf den Ertrag Organic Eprints
Böhm, Herwart.
The demand for organically cultivated oil seed rape in Germany is very high. But the risk of cultivation due to the high demand of N-supply, preceding crop, weed manage¬ment and plant protection is very high as well. In a two-year experiment, the effects of (I) preceding crop (ryegrass-clover-mixture: (a) cut mowing vs. (b) mulching, (c) peas and (d) barley-pea-mixture), (II) row distance of oil seed rape (12.5 cm, 25 cm, 37.5 and 50 cm) and (III) underseed in autumn together with the oil seed rape (with and without white clover) were tested in a split-plot-design with four replicates at the ex-perimental farm of the Institute of Organic Farming (FAL) in Trenthorst. The results showed a very different yield level with 0.85 t ha-1 in 2004, and 1.68 t ha-1...

Samenfeste Sorten oder Hybriden - Anbauvergleich von Möhren unter den Verhältnissen des Ökologischen Landbaus Organic Eprints
Fleck, M.; Sikora, F.; Gränzdörffer, M.; Rohmund, C.; Fölsch, E.; von Fragstein, P.; Heß, J..
A field trial with carrots was carried out in 1998 at two sites in Hesse (North: loamy soil in Neu-Eichenberg; East: sandy soil in Queck) to compare 6 open pollinating and 6 F1 hybrids under an Organic Farming regime. Characteristics of cultivation, harvest, quality, and longevity were measured. Of the parameters of cultivation and harvest the hybrids showed a more intensive foliage growth, higher marketable yields (plus 29 and 25%), and more homogeneous taproots than the open pollinating cultivars. Picture forming methods clearly separated the samples into the two groups of breeding methods. The open pollinating cultivars were characterized by higher degrees of form intensity and ripeness and a stable vitality. The hybrids of the sandy site had a better...

NEW WAYS OF INCREASING BIODIVERSITY ON ORGANIC FARMS AND THEIR EFFECT ON PROFITABLILITY – the Nature Conservation Farm Brodowin – Organic Eprints
Stein-Bachinger, Karin; Zander, Peter; Schobert, Heike; Frielinghaus, Helmut.
Although organic farming systems have many positive biotic aspects, the protection of target species characteristic of open landscape is not guaranteed. Specific knowledge and financial incentives are necessary in order to integrate nature conservation goals successfully into agricultural practice. The main objectives of the interdisciplinary ‘Nature Conservation Farm Brodowin’ project are: the investi-gation of the interactions between large-scale organic farming and nature conservation; the identifica-tion of points of conflict; and the working out of solutions that pay sufficient attention to economic aspects. Legume-grass forage is important for typical species of farmland wildlife. Alternative meth-ods of fodder production which better meet nature...

The effects of organically and conventionally cultivated plant feed on fertility and health in two inbred rat strains Organic Eprints
Jegstrup, Inger Marie; Nygaard Hansen, Marianne; Brandt, Kirsten; Ritskes-Hoitinga, Merel.
In this experiment we study the effects of various culturing methods of plant based foods on health and fertility parameters in a two-generation study in rats. The organic method of growing plants without pesticides and synthetic fertiliser will be compared to a conventional method of growing plants (using pesticides and artificial fertiliser). The diets have been supplemented with minerals and vitamins according to the recommendations of the National Research Council for rats (1995), in order to avoid deficiencies. A control group is fed with a standard breeding chow for rodents. Two inbred rat strains have been selected:  the BN/hsdCpb which is characterised by a relatively low fertility and the GK/mol, a model susceptible for the development of...
