Agnolin, Carlos Alberto; Olivo, Clair Jorge; Sangioni, Luis Antonio; Parra, Carla Lieda Cezimbra; Diehl, Michelle Schalemberg; Santos, Juliano Costa dos; Aguirre, Priscila Flores; Camillo, Giovana; Irgang, Deonise Mrozinski.

The role of price as a product attribute in the organic food context: An exploration based on actual purchase data (D.6.7) Organic Eprints
Marian, Livia; Chrysochou , Polymeros; Krystallis Krontalis, Athanasios; Thøgersen, John.
High prices are often reported as an obstacle that inhibits the purchase of organic food products. The aim of this paper is to investigate how organic food products perform at different price levels and whether high prices are an advantage or a disadvantage for consumers’ repeat purchase of organic food. Based on analyses of actual purchase data, this study explores the effect of two product attributes (production method and price) on repeat purchase. The analysis is based on purchase data for four product categories (red meat, chicken, milk and hard cheese) registered by the GfK panel in 2011 in Denmark. The results show that within product categories, repeat purchase is linked more to production method than to price, and it is more prevalent for organic...

Analysis of non-compliances in the organic certification system in Turkey Organic Eprints
Zanoli, Raffaele; Gambelli, Danilo; Bruschi, Viola.
Organic farming in Turkey is experiencing a strong growth in recent years, with a particular attention to export towards Europe. International and domestic trade opportunities require an efficient control system for organic products. In this paper we analyse the data from inspections of two European control bodies in Turkish farms to analyse risk patterns of non-compliance with the organic regulation. A proportion test is performed to identify the types of crops that are more likely related to non-compliant operators.

Efterafgrøder har ringe effekt på P og K forsyningen på udpint lerjord Organic Eprints
Jensen, Lars Stoumann; Pedersen, Anders; Magid, Jakob; Nielsen, Niels Erik.

Nature quality in organic farming: A conceptual analysis of considerations and criteria in a European context Organic Eprints
Tybirk, Knud; Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted; Frederiksen, Pia.
Nature quality in relation to farming is a complex field. It involves different traditions and interests, different views of what nature is, and different ways of valuing nature. Furthermore there is a general lack of empirical data on many aspects of nature quality in the farmed landscape. The present paper looks at nature quality from the perspective of organic farming, which has its own values and goals in relation to nature – the "Ecologist View of Nature". This is in contrast to the "Culturist View" characteristic of much conventional agriculture and the "Naturalist View" characteristic of the traditional biological approach to nature quality. This threefold distinction forms a framework for exploration of nature quality criteria in the farmed...

Mangfold av edderkopper i jordbærfelt Organic Eprints
Pommeresche, Reidun.

Organic farming enhances soil microbial abundance and activity - A meta-analysis and meta-regression Organic Eprints
Lori, Martina; Symanczik, Sarah; Mäder, Paul; de Deyn, Gerlinde; Gattinger, Andreas.
Population growth and climate change challenge our food and farming systems and provide arguments for an increased intensification of agriculture. A promising option is eco functional intensification through organic farming, an approach based on using and enhancing internal natural resources and processes to secure and improve agricultural productivity, while minimizing negative environmental impacts. In this concept an active soil microbiota plays an important role for various soil based ecosystem services such as nutrient cycling, erosion control and pest and disease regulation. Several studies have reported a positive effect of organic farming on soil health and quality including microbial community traits. However, so far no systematic quantification...

Plant and natural product based homemade remedies manufactured and used by farmers of six central Swiss cantons to treat livestock Organic Eprints
Bischoff, Tinetta; Vogl, Christian R.; Ivemeyer, Silvia; Klarer, Franziska; Meier, Beat; Hamburger, Matthias; Walkenhorst, Michael.
The use of medicinal plants and other natural multicomponent remedies might be one measure to reduce the use of antibiotics in livestock. Ethnoveterinary research has the potential to identify promising natural remedies. The knowledge about remedies for livestock was collected from farmers in six central Swiss cantons, Glarus, Obwalden, Nidwalden, Schwyz, Zug and Uri. Between February and April 2013 49 interviews with 63 farmers (25 females and 38 males, aged 24–74) were conducted. We collected information on the manufacturing of 370 homemade remedies. Of these, 114 contained no plants, 26 contained a mixture of two to five plants, and 230 contained one plant species (defined as homemade single-herbal remedy report (HSHR)). These 230 HSHRs represented 68...

Effect of variety and environment on the amount of thiamine and riboflavin in cereals and grain legumes Organic Eprints
Witten, Stephanie; Aulrich, Karen.
Comprehensive information on B vitamin contents in cereals and grain legumes used for animal feeding is scarce. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine the contents of thiamine and riboflavin uniformly in a selection of cereals and grain legumes. Additionally, the evaluation of varietal and environmental effects on the amounts of both B vitamins was targeted. We analysed contents of thiamine and riboflavin with HPLC in 855 samples of different organically cultivated cereal and grain legume cultivars. Since the sample set was unbalanced, it had to be adapted for further statistical analyses. Data of 541 samples of ten cereal and grain legume cultivars was used to assess the influence of variety and environment with generalized linear models....

Upcycling food leftovers and grass resources through livestock: Impact of livestock system and productivity Organic Eprints
van Hal, O.; de Boer, I.J.M.; Müller, A.; de Vries, S.; Erb, K.-H.; Schader, C.; Gerrits, W.J.J.; van Zanten, H.H.E..
Consumption of animal-source food is criticised, among other reasons, for its relatively high environmental impact. It is, however, increasingly acknowledged that livestock can contribute to nutrition security if they upcycle low-opportunity-cost feed (LCF) – food waste, food processing by-products and grass resources – into nutritious animal-source food. So far, however, no study explored the allocation question “to which livestock should we feed what LCF to maximise livestock's contribution to human nutrition”. Here we optimise the use of the LCF available in the EU, using a model that assigns LCF to those livestock systems that maximise animal protein production. We included the five most common livestock systems in the EU – pigs, laying hens, broilers,...

A simple biodiversity assessment scheme supporting nature-friendly farm management Organic Eprints
Tasser, Erich; Rüdisser, Johannes; Plaikner, Michaela; Wezel, Alexander; Stöckli, Sibylle; Vincent, Audrey; Nitsch, Heike; Dubbert, Monika; Moos, Valerie; Walde, Janette; Bogner, Daniel.
Farmers are important actors for regional development and biodiversity protection. Agri-environment-climate measures (AECM) are therefore a central tool of the European Union to support its biodiversity conservation policy. AECM generally reward farmers for fulfilling predefined management actions or avoiding specific practices. In contrast, result oriented AECM are intended to reward farmers for the outcome of nature friendly management practices. This approach gives more flexibility in management and hence promotes farmers engagement and autonomy. Besides educational activities and agricultural advisory services farmers need user friendly tools to assess biodiversity in order to meet result oriented AECM. Thus, we present a biodiversity assessment scheme...

Soil properties under different orchard floor management systems for organic apple production Organic Eprints
Zoppolo, Roberto J.; Stefanelli, Dario; Bird, George W.; Perry, Ronald L.; Weibel, Franco.
Orchard floor management impacts soil conditions and thus tree performance. This research was initiated to investigate the effects of alternative orchard floor management systems compatible with organic production on soil parameters using the“Pacific Gala” apple cultivar (Malus × domestica Borkh.) on three rootstocks of varying vigor. Alfalfa hay mulch, propane flame burner, and Swiss sandwich system(combination of resident vegetation and tilled strips)were compared from 2001 to 2005. These treatments were applied to tree rows which provided different vegetation-free areas. Contrasting additions of organic matter were evaluated for their effect on soil organic matter (SOM), C content, nitrate and ammonium availability, moisture, and soil food web through...

Crop yield, root growth, and nutrient dynamics in a conventional and three organic cropping systems with different levels of external inputs and N re-cycling through fertility building crops Organic Eprints
Thorup-Kristensen, Kristian; Dresbøll, Dorte Bodin; Kristensen, Hanne L..
One core idea behind organic production is that cropping systems should be less dependent on resource import than conventional production and minimize negative environmental effects. This study aimed to test novel organic rotations, designed to reduce reliance on external resource import. We compared a conventional system (C) and an organic system relying on manure import (O1) to two rotations (O2 and O3), both relying on autumn cover crops for soil fertility, and in O3 green manure rows were left as intercrops. Resource import differed between 149, 85, 25 and 25 kg N ha-1 year-1 in C, O1, O2 and O3. Crop yields were lower in the organic systems (on average 82% of conventional yields), differing among crops, when based on the area grown with main crops....

Use of straight vegetable oil mixtures of rape and camelina as on farm fuels in agriculture Organic Eprints
Paulsen, H. M.; Wichmann, V.; Schuemann, U.; Richter, B..
Possibilities for using straight vegetable oil (SVO) from Camelina sativa (L.) Crantz (camelina or false flax) and its mixtures with Brassica napus (rape) SVO as fuel in adapted diesel engines are described with chemical parameters, measurements in a test engine and a field test in a tractor. Camelina as a crop is attracting attention in organic farming and is often used in mixed cropping systems with low competition to food production area. Camelina SVO has low oxidation stability. Its polymerization affinity limits the storage time and increase the risk of coking at hot motor components and of thickening processes in the lubricant oil of the engine. In mixtures with rape and camelina SVO, threshold limits for Conradson Carbon Residues and for oxidation...

Evolutionary changes of weed competitive traits in winter wheat composite cross populations in organic and conventional farming systems. Organic Eprints
Bertholdsson, Nils-Ove; Weedon, Odette; Brumlop, Sarah; Finckh, Maria R..
Seedling root and shoot growth in hydroponics and allelopathic activity using a bioassay have been studied in very diverse populations of winter wheat grown under either organic or conventional conditions for a number of generations and subjected only to natural selection. The study was conducted on seeds from generation 6 (F6) and 11 (F11) from three composite cross populations (CCPs) produced by the Organic Research Centre in the UK. Since the F5 the populations were maintained under organic and conventional conditions in Germany. Two parallel populations were created from each CC, resulting in a total of six organic and six conventional CCPs. The sets of parallel populations showed similar evolutionary trends indicating that the observed changes are...
