Preliminary scheme of large scale swordfish (Xiphias gladius) in the Indian Ocean. OceanDocs
Poisson, F.; Taquet, M..
Besides the difficulties in gathering sufficiently reliable fisheries data for stock assessment, the problems of determining stock structure, the spatial distribution, the mixing zones remains the important factors to realize a stock assessment project. In parallel with other techniques like biological, chemical, parasitical tags (otolith, DNA and parasite), the tag could contribute towards providing a better knowledge on the migration pattern of swordfish betwe en the Indian Ocean towards the Atlantic (South Africa) or the Pacific (Australia). Within a particular stock, the knowledge of the individual behavior in a smaller area could help to model the spatial distribution following the size and/or the sex that ca n be indispensable for VPA Analysis....

The potential role of constructed wetlands in protection and sustainable management of lake catchments in Kenya OceanDocs
Oketch, M. A..
Constructed wetlands are man-made ecosystems, which are specially designed for treatment of wastewater and non-point source pollution. Constructed wetland technology is gaining popularity due to its economically and environmentally sound attributes as a wastewater management option. Freshwater lakes in Kenya are under threat from degradation as human populations in the catchment areas increase, demands for natural resource extraction grow and urbanization and industrialization intensify. Consequently, there is increased surface runoff, causing sedimentation and eutrophication and ultimately deterioration of water quality, habitats and biodiversity. This trend requires integrated and sustainable water resource management strategies. Strategies for...

Dominance of introduced Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (L.) in Lake Victoria: A case of changing biology and ecosystem OceanDocs
Njiru, M.; Ojuok, J.E; Getabu, A.; Muchiri, M.S.; Cowx, I.G; Okeyo Owuor, J.B..
Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus together with other tilapiines of Oreochromis leucosticus, Tilapia zillii and Sarotherodon melanopleudra (=T. rendalii) were introduced into Lake Victoria (Kenya) between 1951 and 1962 to boost the then declining fishery. Only O. niloticus was able to establish leading further to reduction in endemic tilapiines of Oreochromis variabilis and Oreochromis esculentus. O. niloticus currently forms the third commercially important species after introduced Nile perch, Lates niloticus and a native cyprinid Rastrineobola argentea, whereas other tilapias are extinct or are occasionally caught in the lake. Information was collected from by bottom trawling and from published literature to ascertain possible factors leading to...

Desarrollo de un banco de reproductores de Róbalo (Centropomus undecimalis, Bloch 1792): I. Manejo del alimento OceanDocs
Fraga, I.; Reyes, R.; Ortega, N.; Regueira, E.; Font, R.; Bravo, A..
In order to establish the management methods in snook Centropomus undecimalis (Bloch, 1792) broodstock (initial average weight 960 g), during 18 month three phases were developed. Fishes were marked, measured, weighed and distributed in 5 m3 fiber glass tanks (stock density 1.3 kg/m3). In the first phase (3 month), different feeding schedules were applied: 1. feeding in alternate days; 2. feeding every day excluding weekends; 3. feeding twice a day. Before maturation phase and during three month, enriched semi humid food was supplied. Finally, during 12 month, artificial feed was supplied. The appetite dynamics in fishes was influenced by the feeding schedule applied. When food was offered in alternate days, higher consumption was observed. Females showed...

Effects of land use changes on bird composition along River Njoro: A watershed of Lake Nakuru OceanDocs
Shivoga, W.A.; Ngugi, F.M.; Muchiri, M.S.; Miller, S.N..
The rift valley lakes and their associated watersheds are home for millions of resident and migratory waterfowl. However, they have been recently challenged by land use changes. Lake Nakuru (Kenya) supports diverse biological resources of global, regional and national importance. It is saline and River Njoro is its main source of freshwater. Deforestation, cultivation and urbanization in vital watershed areas have altered the hydrological regime of River Njoro. There is need to preserve and restore aquatic, riparian and terrestrial biological diversity in the watershed to be able to restore and maintain ecological health of Lake Nakuru. The impact of these recent land use changes on birds in the River Njoro Watershed is of concern to conservationists. This...

New Sampling and Data Processing Strategy for Estimating the Composition of Catches by Species and Sizes in the European Purse Seine Tropical Tuna Fisheries OceanDocs
Pianet, R.; Pallares, P.; Petit, Ch..
The difficulties associated with tropical tuna sampling strategies, particularly those resulting from the large-scale adoption of the method of fishing on logs, have caused the Indian Ocean tuna scientists concern since the beginning of the purse seine fishery, as well as the ICCAT SCRS (Standing Committee for Research and Statistics of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas) in recent years. Upon the recommendation of this Committee, in 1996 Spain and France embarked on a European Union project aiming to study the consequences of this new fishing tactic on the estimated catch by species and by size, and to implement a new sampling strategy so as to improve the accuracy of the statistics. Many specific analyses have been...

The role of the Yala swamp lakes in conservation of Lake Victoria region haplochromine cichlids: evidence from molecular genetic and trophic ecology studies OceanDocs
Abila, R.; Salzburger, W.; Ndonga, M.F.; Owiti, D.O.; Barluenga, M..
Lake Kanyaboli (Kenya), a satellite lake of Lake Victoria, has been suggested as a potential refugium for haplochromine cichlids that have gone extinct in Lake Victoria. We employed mitochondrial DNA and microsatellite DNA molecular markers as well as feeding ecology studies to re- evaluate the evolutionary and ecological significance of Lake Kanyaboli haplochromines. The mitochondrial DNA and microsatellite markers revealed high genetic diversity in the endangered Xystichromis phytophagus and also the presence of mtDNA haplotypes that may have either gone extinct in Lake Victoria or have arisen in situ. Lake Kanyaboli thus acts as a ‘genetic reservoir’ for the Lake Victoria species flock. Gut content analysis revealed six trophic groups among the six...

Opportunities and strategies for conservation of fish genetic resources in Cote d'Ivoire OceanDocs
Yapi-Gnaoré, V.; Da Costa, K.S.; Kouassi, N.C.; Dembele, I..
Cote d'Ivoire has a diverse ichthyological fauna. About 173 species of fish from 27 families and 67 genera are represented in the different rivers and lacustrine systems. Around 60 species are harvested by artisanal fishing. Less than 10 are used in aquaculture. Strategies need to be developed to preserve these diverse fish populations in both natural and artificial waterbodies. Cote d'Ivoire is watered by four main rivers. These are, from west to east, Cavally (600 km), Sassandra (650 km), Bandama (1050 km) and Comoe (1 100 km). A group of small coastal rivers composed of San Pedro (112 km), Boubo (130 km), Me (140 km), Agnebi (250 km) and Bia (290 km), among others, loca ted in the forest zone, are distributed throughout the southern region. Tributaries...

The abundance, biomass and composition of pelagic ciliates in East African lakes of different salinity and trophy OceanDocs
Yasindi, A. W.; Taylor, W. D..
Planktonic ciliates were studied in 17 tropical East African lakes of different salinity and trophic status. Oligotrichs (e.g., Strombidium, Strobilidium and Halteria) and scuticociliates (e.g., Cyclidium, Pleuronema, Cristigera), dominated the ciliate communities. Conductivity and trophic status were the most important environmental variables influencing the distribution of ciliate species in East African lakes. Herbivorous oligotrichs were important in oligotrophic and mesotrophic lakes, as they are in temperate and subtropical lakes, but their importance decreased with increasing chlorophyll a concentration and conductivity. On the other hand, the importance of scuticociliates (primarily bacterivores) increased with increasing chlorophyll a and...
