Use of otolith-shape analysis for stock discrimination of Boops boops along the Algerian coast (southwestern Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer
Ider, D.; Ramdane, Z.; Mahe, Kelig; Dufour, Jean-louis; Bacha, M.; Amara, R..
Otolith-shape analysis was examined to determine its utility for biological stock identification of the bogue Boops boops along the Algerian coast of the Mediterranean Sea. The outlines of 179 sagittal otolith pairs from fish collected at three locations (Oran, Bejaia and Annaba) between 2013 and 2016 were digitised and analysed for shape variation by elliptical Fourier analysis. Potential confounding sources of variation (fish length, age and sex, and left or right otolith position) were examined and accounted for in the analyses before interpretation of spatial differences in distribution of the stock. Redundancy analysis showed a significant difference between the left and right otoliths. No difference was correlated with sex and age, but fish length...

Improvement in airsea flux estimates derived from satellite observations ArchiMer
Bentamy, Abderrahim; Grodsky, Semyon A.; Katsaros, Kristina; Mestas-nunez, Alberto M.; Blanke, Bruno; Desbiolles, Fabien.
A new method is developed to estimate daily turbulent airsea fluxes over the global ocean on a 0.25 degrees grid. The required surface wind speed (w(10)) and specific air humidity (q(10)) at 10m height are both estimated from remotely sensed measurements. w(10) is obtained from the SeaWinds scatterometer on board the QuikSCAT satellite. A new empirical model relating brightness temperatures (T-b) from the Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) and q(10) is developed. It is an extension of the author's previous q(10) model. In addition to T-b, the empirical model includes sea surface temperature (SST) and airsea temperature difference data. The calibration of the new empirical q(10) model utilizes q(10) from the latest version of the National Oceanography...

Overview of the First SMOS Sea Surface Salinity Products. Part I: Quality Assessment for the Second Half of 2010 ArchiMer
Reul, Nicolas; Tenerelli, Joseph; Boutin, Jaqueline; Chapron, Bertrand; Paul, Frederic; Brion, Emilie; Gaillard, Fabienne; Archer, Olivier.
Multi-angular images of the brightness temperature (TB) of the Earth at 1.4 GHz are reconstructed from the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) satellite sensor data since end 2009. Sea surface salinity (SSS) products remote sensing from space is being attempted using these data over the world oceans. The quality of the first version of the European Space Agency operational Level 2 (L2) SSS swath products is assessed in this paper, using satellite/in situ SSS data match-ups that were collected over the second half of 2010. This database reveals that 95% of the SMOS L2 products show a global error standard deviation on the order of ∼1.3 practical salinity scale. Simple spatiotemporal aggregation of the L2 products to generate monthly SSS maps at 1◦ × 1◦...

Body size-density relationship for Mytilus edulis in an experimental food-regulated situation ArchiMer
Alunno-bruscia, Marianne; Petraitis, P; Bourget, E; Frechette, Marcel.
We grew mussels (Mytilus edulis) under two different food regimes and eight population density levels to estimate the joint effects of density and biomass on their growth and survival and to determine the shape of the biomass-density (B-IV) relationship. Mussels were reared for 22 months, between December 1994 and October 1996, in 1-L experimental chambers supplied with natural seston. Growth in shell length, individual wet mass and ash free dry mass (m) decreased with decreasing food availability and increasing population density. Survival was negatively correlated with density but did not differ significantly between food regimes during the first year. Variations in concentration of available food did not alter the effects of crowding on mussels, as...

La pêche au vivaneau en Guyane française ArchiMer
Prevost, Etienne.
Traditionally fished by line and conical fishing basket by Venezuelan ships, the red snapper resource off the coast of French Guyana (fish belonging to the Lutjanidae family) has been experiencing intensive fishing since 1984-85 due to the boom in classic fishing techniques and the development of trawl fishing. The study evaluates the situation of this resource's potential: biology, sampling data, bio-statistics (size and sex), size-weight relationship of the three species, specific composition of the catches, describes fishing devices and prospecting, pinpoints fishing spots, gives a distribution of the Venezuelan and Martinique fishing effort.

Albacore tuna (Thunnus alalunga) is an important target of tuna fisheries in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The commercial catch of albacore is the highest globally among all temperate tuna species, contributing around 6% in weight to global tuna catches over the last decade. The accurate assessment and management of this heavily exploited resource requires a robust understanding of the species’ biology and of the pattern of connectivity among oceanic regions, yet Indian Ocean albacore population dynamics remain poorly understood and its level of connectivity with the Atlantic Ocean population is uncertain. We analysed morphometrics and genetics of albacore (n = 1,874) in the southwest Indian (SWIO) and southeast Atlantic (SEAO) Oceans to investigate the...

Estimation par spectrofluométrie des concentrations d'hydrocarbures dans l'eau de mer en Manche Occidentale à la suite du naufrage de l"AMOCO CADIZ" du 30 mars au 18 avril 1978 ArchiMer
Marchand, Michel.
The oil .pollution, resulting from the "AMOCO CADIZ" tanker spill on the Brittany coast of North Finistere-has affected a very large section of the western Channel, limited for the period covering March 30 to April 18 to the west by the 5°W meridian, to the east by the St-Brieuc Bay, to the north by the 49°20' parallel. The contents of hydrocarbons observed in sea water at different levels show that the whole of water column is contaminated by hydrocarbons and indicate very probably the pollution of the sedimentary phase in the areas, hited by the drifting sheets.

Modeling the global fishmeal and fish oil markets ArchiMer
Mullon, C.; Mittaine, J-f.; Thebaud, Olivier; Peron, G.; Merino, G.; Barange, M..
P>To explore the drivers of change in the complex system relating small pelagic fisheries and fishmeal/fish oil markets, to identify the interactions between these drivers and their overall impacts, we propose a bio-economic model, coupling the ecological and the economic dynamics of these global commodities. The model enables an analysis of the consequences of both global and local changes in the environment of production systems. Through sensitivity analysis of specific input parameters, we evaluate the robustness of the overall system to such changes and show that local responses of production systems and markets cannot be considered in isolation from the set of interactions at global level.

Two profiling floats, equipped with nitrate concentration sensors were deployed in the northwestern Mediterranean from summer 2012 to summer 2013. Satellite ocean color data were extracted to evaluate surface chlorophyll concentration at float locations. Time series of mixed layer depths and nitrate and chlorophyll concentrations were analyzed to characterize the interplay between the physical-chemical and biological dynamics in the area. Deep convection (mixed layer depth > 1000 m) was observed in January–February, although high-nitrate surface concentrations could be already observed in December. Chlorophyll increase is observed since December, although high values were observed only in March. The early nitrate availability in subsurface layers, which...

Sedimentary hydrocarbon remnants of eukaryotic C-26-C-30 sterols can be used to reconstruct early algal evolution. Enhanced C-29 sterol abundances provide algal cellmembranes a density advantage in large temperature fluctuations. Here, we combined a literature review with new analyses to generate a comprehensive inventory of unambiguously syngenetic steranes in Neoproterozoic rocks. Our results show that the capacity for C-29 24ethyl- sterol biosynthesis emerged in the Cryogenian, that is, between 720 and 635 million years ago during the Neoproterozoic Snowball Earth glaciations, which were an evolutionary stimulant, not a bottleneck. This biochemical innovation heralded the rise of green algae to global dominance of marine ecosystems and highlights the...

Effects of age and environment on the summer mortality in cupped oyster Crassostrea gigas during the first two years ArchiMer
Degremont, Lionel; Boudry, Pierre; Soletchnik, Patrick; Bedier, Edouard; Ropert, Michel; Samain, Jean-francois.
Three successive generations were produced between 2001 and 2003 to assess to what extent genetic variability exists for survival in juvenile oysters Crassostrea gigas. For each generation, two groups were selected for their high ("R" for resistant) and low ("S" for susceptible) survival. Significant differences in mortality were observed during the first year in Riviere d'Auray (RA) (Brittany-France). However, low and similar mortality were observed for both groups, with no significant difference between groups in the first and second generation in this site, where the first summer is the critical, sensitive period with a clear age effect. In Baie des Veys (BDV) (Normandie-France), where mortalities usually mainly affect adults, mortality between groups,...

Contrasting the flavors of El Nino-Southern Oscillation using sea surface salinity observations ArchiMer
Singh, Awnesh; Delcroix, Thierry; Cravatte, Sophie.
The recent detection of a central Pacific type of El Nino has added a new dimension to the El Nino-Southern Oscillation climatic puzzle. Sea surface salinity (SSS) observations collected during 1977-2008 in the tropical Pacific are used to contrast the three eastern Pacific (EP) (1982-1983, 1991-1992, 1997-1998) and seven central Pacific (CP) (1977-1978, 1986-1988, 1990-1991, 1992-1995, 2002-2003, 2004-2005, 2006-2007) types of El Nino events, as well as the six EP (1985-1986, 1988-1989, 1995-1996, 1999-2001, 2005-2006, 2007-2008) and two CP (1983-1984, 1998-1999) types of La Nina events.

Detection of microseismic compressional (P) body waves aided by numerical modeling of oceanic noise sources ArchiMer
Obrebski, Mathias; Ardhuin, Fabrice; Stutzmann, Eleonore; Schimmel, Martin.
Among the different types of waves embedded in seismic noise, body waves present appealing properties but are still challenging to extract. Here we first validate recent improvements in numerical modeling of microseismic compressional (P) body waves and then show how this tool allows fast detection and location of their sources. We compute sources at similar to 0.2 Hz within typical P teleseismic distances (30-90 degrees) from the Southern California Seismic Network and analyze the most significant discrete sources. The locations and relative strengths of the computed sources are validated by the good agreement with beam-forming analysis. These 54 noise sources exhibit a highly heterogeneous distribution, and cluster along the usual storm tracks in the...
