Performance Assessment of Manual Rice Harvesting Methods under Farmer’s Field Conditions CIGR Journal
Amponsah, Shadrack Kwadwo; Addo, Ahmad; Djidohopkin, Ella; Olaye, Romaric Biaou.
A better understanding of field performances for traditional harvesting methods and tools is essential in facilitating future improvement on design and overall efficiency. Performance of different manual harvesting tools and methods was evaluated under farmer’s field conditions for IR841 and Nerica L20 rice varieties in Benin. Results from evaluation showed that an average of 84 to 161 man-hours was required to thresh a hectare of rice field using either the threshing by impact “bambam” or bag beating method.  Less time was however required to thresh IR841 than Nerica L20 varieties, irrespective of manual threshing method used. Similarly, between 58 to 95 man-hours was required to harvest a hectare of field using either a cutlass or sickle. However, to...

DEVELOPMENT OF A MOTORIZED CASSAVA PEELER FOR SMALL AND MEDIUM SCALE ENTERPRISES CIGR Journal
Amanor, Ishmael Nartey; Bobobee, Emmanuel Yaovi Hunnuor.
In Ghana a lot of products are produced from cassava roots, but processing of most cassava product requires peeling. Cassava peeling in Ghana is a major manual activity, which is time consuming and labour-intensive and hence requires mechanization. About 34% of freshly harvested cassava roots is lost along the food chain and faster processing is necessary to curb this situation. The development of an efficient equipment to help fast-track peeling of cassava root is key. A motorized cassava peeler with four different lining materials (concrete, metal, rubber and wood) was developed and tested with two local cassava varieties (Asi-Abayiwa and Dabon). The batch loading weight, peel removal efficiency, percent flesh loss and peeling capacity of the peeler was...

Snail meat is an alternative source of rich protein in the tropics and an important part of many diets. Despite its wide popularity as a cheap source of dietary protein, very little investments have been made into the processing of snail meat in terms of processing equipment and other value addition technologies. Up till now, many farmers utilize manual methods in breaking snail shells which are very demanding and tiring.  Furthermore, existing technology of snail shellers are not only expensive but the technology is beyond the reach f many local farmers thereby discouraging many from exploring the abundant potentials of the processing value chain. Hence, this study designed and evaluated a snail shell cracking machine using standard engineering procedures...

Development of a smart machine-vision-based system to detect water stress in greenhouse tomato plants CIGR Journal
LAK, MohammadBagher.
Timely detection of water stress in agricultural crops is important. In this paper, a smart classification algorithm was developed to detect water stress in tomato plants that were grown in the greenhouse. During the growth period, thermal and visible light images were acquired from the canopy tops in two states: (1) plants in normal conditions; and (2) plants under water stress. Images were obtained using a camera that recorded simultaneous frames of thermal and visible (red, green, and blue (RGB)) features. Based on these features, 22 parameters were defined and applied to classify the image frames. In order to develop an efficient algorithm, principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to optimize the classifying of parameters. For normalizing the...

Optimal Financial Insulation Thickness of a Broiler House CIGR Journal
Panagakis- FBC, Panagiotis; Manolakos, Dimitris; Axaopoulos, Petros.
A common method for environmental control in livestock facilities is to use thermal insulation for exterior walls and roof. In regions with cool winters increasing the insulation thickness decreases the heating requirements, however in regions with hot summers may lead to unwanted increase of inside temperature, thus intensifying cooling loads. It is worth noting that financial thickness optimization of a broiler house external walls and gable roofs insulation for different orientations has not been sufficiently addressed, thus a detailed transient simulation was used to model existing energy audited broiler house and to calculate its annual heating and cooling loads. For that, hourly climatic data and all the heat and moisture gains and losses resulting...
