The autecology of Polydora ciliata along the Belgian coast OMA
Daro, M.H.; Polk, P..
The life-history of Polydora ciliata has been studied in the Bassin de Chasse, Ostende. Three or even four generations succeed one another during the period from April to September. Their planktonic larvae can be found throughout the year, they have a life of 12 to 14 days. Larvae from 3 to 9 segments are growing 2 segments a day, larvae from 10 to 16 segments 1 segment a day. During the first period they feed on nannoplankton or detrital particles, during the second period they are carnivorous, but also detritiphagous and phytophagous. After 3 weeks of sedentary life egg-laying takes place. When one or two broods have been produced most animals die. The eggs hatch after 1 week. The worms are detritiphagous and scrape the food directly...

On suspended barite and the oxygen minimum in the Southern Ocean OMA
Dehairs, F.A.; Goeyens, L.; Stroobants, N.; Bernard, P.; Goyet, C.; Poisson, A.; Chesselet, R..
Particulate Ba profiles were measured in the Indian sector of the southern ocean. The largest fraction (>80%) of this barium is present as barite microcrystals. The profiles of total barium are characterized by a subsurface maximum between 200 and 500 m depth in the vicinity of the oxygen minimum. Highest barium values are found just south of the Polar Front, while lowest values occur close to the Antarctic Divergence. Between the divergence and the Polar front a tight inverse relationship is observed between oxygen in the oxygen minimum and barium in the barium maximum. This relationship disappears north of the Polar Front. Since suspended barite is known to be of biological origin, the correlation of barite with oxygen suggests that the observed...

Transfer of seston to zooplankton in marine ecosystems OMA
Tackx, M..
When considering zooplankton feeding as one of the pathways involved in the transfer of substances in marine ecosystems, it is important to study the composition and size distribution of the seston: firstly, the elements in which one is interested may be associated with different types and sizes of particles; secondly, particle size and composition are important factors in relation t o the feeding process of the zooplankton itself. High speed cinematographic studies have recently revealed that copepods use two different mechanisms for feeding. Small particles (< 12 pm) are collected by continuous low amplitude movements of the second maxillae and combing of the appendages. Larger particles are detected and collected individually by means of a specific...

Biochemical and enzymatic characterization of decapsulated cysts and nauplii of the brine shrimp Artemia at different developmental stages OMA
García-Ortega, A.; Verreth, J.A.J.; Coutteau, P.; Segner, H.; Huisman, E.A.; Sorgeloos, P..
Decapsulated Artemia cysts were used to study the factors which induce the superior performance of live organisms as food for fish larvae. The biochemical composition, the in vitro protein digestibility, and the total proteolytic and trypsin activities in cysts and nauplii of Artemia were determined at different developmental stages as a function of incubation time. Six different incubation times were studied: 1, 6, 11, 16, 21 and 25h of development, which cover cyst and early nauplii stages. The individual dry weight of Artemia decreased through development. The individual protein and lipid content (µg ind-1 remained constant during development until the time of hatching after...

Variations in lipid classes and fatty acid content in tissues of wild Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man) females during maturation OMA
Cavalli, R.O.; Tamtin, M.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
This study describes the variations in total lipid, lipid classes and fatty acids in the midgut gland (MG), ovary, and muscle tissue of wild-caught Macrobrachium rosenbergii to elucidate the importance of these components during sexual maturation. Mature females were captured in the Mae Klong River, Thailand, from July to September 1998, and divided into five groups according to their ovarian development. Total lipid levels in the ovary increased with maturation, but no concomitant decrease in MG lipids was observed. Thus, the lipid requirements of the developing ovary are thought to be more dependent on the immediate ingestion of dietary lipid than on MG reserves. Higher proportions of neutral lipids (NL), mainly triacylglycerols (TG),...

International study on Artemia: 14. Growth and survival of Artemia larvae of different geographical origin in a standard culture test OMA
Vanhaecke, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
For characterization of strains of the brine shrimp Artemia of different geographical origin, a standard culture test has been developed in order to compare statistically growth and survival of larvae of different strains. 25 geographical strains have been studied so far -including, for 3 strains, analyses of cysts harvested at different times. Important differences in rates of growth and survival were observed between strains but not among batches of the same strain. Best performances were noted for strains from Bahia Salinas (Puerto Rico), Buenos Aires (Argentina), Chaplin Lake (Canada), Great Salt Lake (Utah, USA), Galera Zamba and Manaure (Colombia).

Seasonal variation of phytoplankton populations and primary production in the Sluice dock at Ostend (Belgium) OMA
Mommaerts-Billiet, F.; Mommaerts, J.-P.; Daro, M.H..
The Sluice Dock at Ostend has been investigated for phytoplankton populations and primary production for the years 1971 and 1972. Nannoplankton is demonstrated to take a prominent part in pelagic primary production. The seasonal cycle shows a short spring outburst of Eutreptiella marina da Cunha followed by a depressed production period (May). Summer is the most productive; several nannoplankton populations appear successively in this period. The depression in May is discussed in relation to zooplankton activity.

Thermal resistance, developmental rate and heat shock proteins in Artemia franciscana, from San Francisco Bay and southern Vietnam OMA
Clegg, J.S.; Jackson, S.A.; Van Hoa, N.; Sorgeloos, P..
Cysts (encysted gastrula embryos) of Artemia franciscana collected from salterns in San Francisco Bay, California, USA (SF) were inoculated into much warmer growth ponds in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam (V) in 1996. V adults arising directly from these cysts during 17 April to 15 May produced their own cysts, which were collected, processed and stored until shipped to the USA for study. Adults grown in the laboratory from SF cysts (those used for the inoculation) were less resistant to high temperature than adults cultured from V cysts. V cysts produced heat-resistant adults, even though cultured under the same laboratory conditions as SF animals, at much lower temperatures than they ever experienced in Vietnam. Differences in...

Possible applications of modern fish larviculture technology to ornamental fish production OMA
Dhert, P.; Lim, L.C.; Candreva, P.; Van Duffel, H.; Sorgeloos, P..
There has been rapid development in the marine foodfish larviculture technology in Europe since the early eighties, especially in the flat fish, turbot and halibut, and the bass and bream species. The most significant improvements in the eighties were the introduction of light control, artificial reproduction techniques, appropriate water treatment and the use of rotifers and Artemia nauplii of specific sizes and in the late eighties and early nineties the quality enhancement of live food organisms using specific enrichment techniques. Present research is focused on the implementation of several microbial techniques to improve the hygiene of live prey and fish. Many of the modern larviculture techniques being used in marine foodfish...

Growth and toxicity tests on the marine nanoplanktonic alga Platymonas tetrathele G.S. West in the presence of crude oil and emulsifiers OMA
Mommaerts-Billiet, F..
Phytoplankton response to environmental pollution by oil and emulsifiers has been studied. The nanoplanktonic flagellate Platymonas tetrathele has been assayed with increasing concentrations of crude oil, industrial non-ionic emulsifiers and mixtures of these products. Cultures poisoned with an emulsifier with an aromatic solvent exhibited a very long lag phase. Diminished growth rates were observed for all the products tested most of the time at concentrations above 50 ppm. The mixtures showed a toxicity close to that of the emulsifier component at its concentration in the mixture and lower than that of the crude oil alone. Fine structure modifications have been investigated and the possible ecological effects of such pollution have...
