Morphological development of larvae and juveniles of Prochilodus argenteus Ciência Rural
Guimarães,Irũ Menezes; Dias Filho,Vinícius Augusto; Silva,Ana Helena Gomes da; Santos,Rafael Silva; Severi,William.
ABSTRACT: Prochilodus argenteus is an endemic fish species from the São Francisco River basin that is of high economic and environmental importance. The present study aimed to contribute with information to the taxonomic identification of larvae and juveniles of this species. Larvae , obtained from induced spawning of wild animals, were reared in ponds. Individuals were collected daily and classified into larval stages or juvenile phase. Morphological descriptions and morphometric measurements were performed, together with a piece wise linear regression analysis of the body proportions throughout the development process. Individuals in the preflexion stage had a standard length (SL) of 4.48 to 6.64mm, long to moderate body (BH/SL), small to moderate head...

Canine lacrimal and third eyelid superficial glands’ macroscopic and morphometric characteristics Ciência Rural
Cabral,Vânia Pais; Laus,José Luiz; Dagli,Maria Lúcia Zaidan; Pereira,Gener Tadeu; Talieri,Ivia Carmem; Monteiro,Eduardo Raposo; Mamede,Fabrício Villela.
The lacrimal and third eyelid superficial glands produce the aqueous component of the preocular tear film. In this research, morphologic and morphometric assessments of the parenchyma and stroma of both lacrimal glands of healthy adult mongrel dogs were performed. Both lacrimal and third eyelid glands of fourteen dogs were collected, summing fifty-six samples. The macroscopic and morphometric data were statistically analyzed, according to the glandular type (lacrimal and third eyelid superficial glands) and sexual dimorphism (male or female). The lacrimal glands were significantly larger and longer than the superficial glands of the third eyelid. Expressive morphometric differences of interlobular duct, lymphocytic infiltration, interlobular vessels and...

Gender on the growth of Criollo foals from birth to three years of age Ciência Rural
Pimentel,Anelise Maria Hammes; Rodrigues,Walvonvitis Baes; Martins,Charles Ferreira; Montanez,Nathanael Ramos; Boligon,Arione Augusti; Souza,João Ricardo Malheiros de.
ABSTRACT: The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of gender on the growth of Criollo foals, in order to use this information as a reference for breeding as well as in future research. Body height, thoracic perimeter, and cannon bone perimeter of 75 foals were measured from two farms in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil (Lat. 32°, 33′, 58″, Long. 53°, 22′, 33″) and from three generations over three years. In both farms, animals were kept under the same range and feeding conditions. Nonlinear regression models were applied to describe the growth curves for the three traits over the experimental period. Cannon bone perimeter was greater in males than in females (P<0.001) but the predicted curves for body height and thoracic perimeter did not...

Morphometry of megakaryocytes in the liver of New Zealand White rabbits during intrauterine and postnatal development Ciência Rural
Pacheco,Maria Rita; Ferreira,Nilson; Melo,Válder Rodrigues; Baraldi-Artoni,Silvana Martinez; Orsi,Antonio Marcos; Machado,Márcia Rita Fernandes; Oliveira,Fabrício Singaretti de.
The hepatic megakaryocytic cells of New Zealand White rabbit in the intrauterine phase and in the immediate postnatal period were studied. Statistical analysis of the data concerning the cytoplasm and nucleus of those cells, i.e., area, perimeter, maximum diameter, minimum diameter, volume and shape factor, presented significant differences (p<0.01) for F values concerning the life phases studied on15th, 22nd and 29th day of intrauterine life and 10th day of postnatal life, and for F values for animal within each phase. The Tukey’s test showed that most of the parameters studied in the cytoplasm and nucleus of these megakaryocytic cells presented the lowest values on the 15th day of intrauterine life and the highest on the 22nd day of the same phase.

Performance and development of gastric compartments of calves fed with cheese whey and transition milk Ciência Rural
Miranda,Maria Vivianne Freitas Gomes de; Morais,Michel Raony Paiva Teixeira de; Lima,Renata Nayhara de; Leite,Hélia Maria de Souza; Assis,Ana Paula Pinheiro de; Teófilo,Tiago da Silva; Fontenele Neto,José Domingues; Lima,Patrícia de Oliveira.
ABSTRACT: This study aimed to evaluate whether cheese whey associated with transitional milk or not, could serve as a suitable alternative to whole milk for calf rearing. For this, twenty-four male calves of crossbred Holstein-Zebu, were distributed in a completely randomized design with three treatments (8 calves per treatment) and fed for 60 days with one of the following liquid diets: i) 100% whole milk, ii) 50% whole milk and 50% cheese whey, and iii) 30% transitional milk and 70% cheese whey. There was no difference in food intake between treatments. The analysis showed that whole milk replacement did not alter the stomach weight or the ruminal cell proliferation when compared to treatment using 100% whole milk; however, the transitional milk/cheese...

Carcass characteristics of sheep fed with castor bean hulls in replacement of tifton 85 hay Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Urbano,Stela Antas; Ferreira,Marcelo de Andrade; Dutra Junior,Wilson Moreira; Andrade,Rafael de Paula Xavier de; Siqueira,Michelle Christina Bernardo de; Félix,Sabrina Carla Rodrigues.
Castor bean hulls (CBH), co-products of castor oil extraction, are high in dry matter (DM) and fiber and are emerging as alternative roughage in sheep feed. This could reduce feed costs since other sources of roughage can be more expensive. The effects of replacing Tifton 85 hay with CBH at 0, 33, 66 and 100% in the diet of sheep on the carcass characteristics, weights and yields of retail cuts and carcass measurements were studied. Twenty-eight non-castrated sheep averaging 7 ± 1.4 months of age with an initial weight of 19.5 ± 4.3 kg were slaughtered after 70 days of confinement. There was a linear decline (P ≤ 0.05) in slaughter body weight, empty body weight, hot and cold carcass weight and longissimus muscle area (LMA) as the percentage of dietary CBH...
