The State and Consumer Confidence in Eco-Labeling: Organic Labeling in Denmark, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States Organic Eprints
Sønderskov, Kim Mannemar; Daugbjerg, Carsten.
Trustworthy eco-labels provide consumers with valuable information on environmentally friendly products and thus promote green consumerism. But what makes an eco-label trustworthy and what can government do to increase consumer confidence? The scant existing literature indicates that low governmental involvement increases confidence. This suggests that government should just provide the basic legal framework for eco-labeling and leave the rest to non-governmental organizations. However, the empirical underpinning of this conclusion is insufficient. This paper analyses consumer confidence in different organic food labeling regimes with varying degrees of governmental involvement. Using unique and detailed survey data from USA, United Kingdom, Denmark and...

The influence of phosphorus deficiency on growth and nitrogen fixation of white clover plants Organic Eprints
Høgh-Jensen, Dr Henning; Schjoerring, Dr Jan K.; Soussana, Dr Jean-Francois.
The effects of P deficiency on growth, N2-fixation and photosynthesis in white clover (Trifolium repens L.) were investigated using three contrasting relative addition rates of P, or following abrupt withdrawal of the P supply. Responses to a constant below-optimum P supply rate consisted of a decline in N2-fixation per unit root weight and a small reduction in the efficiency with which electrons were allocated to the reduction of N2 in the nodules. Abrupt P removal arrested nodule growth and caused a substantial decline in nitrogenase activity per unit root weight, but not per unit nodule mass. Similarly, the rate of photosynthesis per unit leaf area was unaffected by abrupt P removal, while the CO2 acquisition for the plant as a whole decreased due to...

Organic Food "Made in China" Organic Eprints
Sternfeld, Eva.
China joined the international organic movement comparatively late. Challenged by the scarcity of arable land and a large population to feed, the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) for many years has been reluctant to support organic farming that might result in a drop of agricultural output. On the contrary, China’s “Green Revolution” catapulted the country to a leading producer and user of agrochemicals in the world. This development came at a high cost for the country’s environmental quality and food safety. In recent years, accumulating public complaints about environmental pollution, food poisoning, sickness and death of farmers poisoned by agrochemicals as well as increasing difficulties with agricultural exports rejected as a result of...

The Development Of The European Market For Organic Products: Insights From A Delphi Study Organic Eprints
Padel, Susanne; Midmore, Peter.
The purpose of the paper is present experiences using a well established forecasting tool, the Delphi- method, to explore the dynamics of, and prospects for the development of the market for organic food in Europe. DELPHI, developed by the Rand co-operation to improve military technology forecasting, uses expert feedback to refine an informed perspective on complex or uncertain issues. This study used experts of the organic food market in 18 countries to explore factors influencing the development of the organic market; future market prospects, and the role of governments in future market development. The results show that short supply chains and focus on regional organic shops may be an indication of an earlier stage of market development, likely to be...

Sortsforskelle i næringsstofoptagelse, vækst og kerneudbytter af vårbyg til økologisk dyrkning Organic Eprints
Nielsen, N.E.; Thomsen, I.K.; Berntsen, J..

Investigating the selectivity of weed harrowing with new methods Organic Eprints
Rasmussen, Jesper; Bibby, Bo Martin; Schou, Anders P..
In six field experiments it was investigated whether row spacing, timing, direction and orientation of post-emergence weed harrowing in spring barley influenced the selectivity and whether it is important that increasing intensities of harrowing are generated either by increasing number of passes or increasing driving speed. Selectivity was defined as the relationship between crop burial in soil immediately after treatment and weed control. To estimate crop burial, digital image analysis was used in order to make the estimations objective. The study showed that narrow row spacing decreased selectivity in a late growth stage (21) whereas row spacing in the range of 5.3 cm to 24 cm had no effects in an early growth stage (12). Harrowing across rows decreased...

Biodiversity in Organic Horticulture – an Indicator for Sustainability and a Tool for Pest Management Organic Eprints
Wyss, Eric; Pfiffner, Lukas.
Conservation and enhancement of biodiversity are mentioned in the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) standards and in all national guidelines as essential pillars for organic agriculture. Recent reviews show that organic agriculture enhances the number of species and the abundance of many taxa (plants, birds, mammals, earthworms, arthropods, soil microbes), compared with conventional agriculture. Considering the benefits for sustainability, a multi-criteria analysis shows that organic agriculture not only improves biodiversity but also has positive effects on soil (e.g., soil erosion, structure, biological activity), water (e.g., no pesticide residues) and climatic factors (e.g., air pollution). In organic horticulture,...

Implications of feed concentrate reduction in organic grassland-based dairy systems: a long-term on-farm study Organic Eprints
Leiber, Florian; Schenk, Isabel K.; Maeschli, Ariane; Ivemeyer, Silvia; Zeitz, Johanna O.; Moakes, Simon; Klocke, Peter; Staehli, Pamela; Notz, Christophe; Walkenhorst, Michael.
In response to increasing efforts for reducing concentrate inputs to organic dairy production in grassland-rich areas of Europe, a long-term study was conducted, which assessed the impacts of concentrate reductions on cows’ performance, health, fertility and average herd age. In total, 42 Swiss commercial organic dairy cattle farms were monitored over 6 years (‘Y0’, 2008/09 until ‘Y5’, 2013/14). In comparison with overall data of Swiss herdbooks (including conventional and organic farms), the herds involved in the project had lower milk yields, similar milk solids, shorter calving intervals and higher average lactation numbers. During the first 3 project years farmers reduced the concentrate proportion (i.e. cereals, oilseeds and grain legumes) in the...

Outdoor production of slaughter pigs requires an optimized management to mitigate N pollution Organic Eprints
Eriksen, J.; Hermansen, J.E..
In Danish outdoor pig production the sows are usually kept on grassland, while their progeny are transferred at weaning to indoor housing with access to an outdoor concrete pen. It may seem paradoxical that a large part of meat consumed from outdoor systems comes from pigs that during the majority of their life have been prevented from natural behaviour such as rooting, digging and grazing. The explanation is the drawbacks of rearing growers outdoors including huge space demand, high work expenditure, high feed consumption and high environmental costs due to nutrient losses to aquifers and the atmosphere caused by high nutrient load and difficulty maintaining grass cover. However, it may be questioned if pigs reared indoors comply with consumers’...

An indicator system of nature quality on organic fields Organic Eprints
Axelsen, J.; Bruus-Pedersen, M.; Larsen, T.; Krogh, P.H..
Soil fauna diversity, as well as total mite and springtail numbers was correlated with soil type, tillage intensity and fertiliser use as well as crop and grazing history and duration of the current state of the field. 430 samples taken in 2002 on a wide range of organically farmed fields also showed that soil type interacted with crop type and grazing intensity. A higher number of mites and springtails were found in crops that included clover, almost independently of soil type. Higher numbers of mites were found at high grazing intensity compared to low grazing intensity on the same soil type. In 2003, microarthropods were collected in spring, summer and autumn in Southern Jutland, Mid-Jutland and Sealand. In each region both cereal and vegetable fields...

Symbiotic nitrogen fixation and N-transfer in a grass-white clover mixture Organic Eprints
Vinther, Finn P..
Symbiotic N2 fixation (SNF) and transfer of fixed N from clover to grass in a grass-white clover mixture was measured during two years using 15N isotope dilution techniques. White clover derived from 87 to 99% of its N from the atmosphere. The total SNF ranged from 150 to 277 kg N ha-1 yr-1, which corresponded to 34-45 mg N fixed per gram of white clover dry weight. The transfer of fixed N from clover to grass corresponded to approximately 10 kg N ha-1 yr-1.

Generalist predators in organically and conventionally managed grass-clover fields: implications for conservation biological control Organic Eprints
Birkhofer , K; Fließbach , A; Wise , DH; Scheu , S.
Organically managed agroecosystems rely in part on biological control to prevent pest outbreaks. Generalist predators (Araneae, Carabidae and Staphylinidae) are a major component of the natural enemy community in agroecosystems. We assessed the seasonal dynamics of major generalist predator groups in conventionally and organically managed grass–clover fields that primarily differed by fertilisation strategy. We further established an experiment, manipulating the abundant wolf spider genus Pardosa, to identify the importance of these predators for herbivore suppression in the same system and growth period. Organic management significantly enhanced ground-active spider numbers early and late in the growing season, with potentially positive effects of plant...

Green Food in China Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
"Green Food" is a Chinese food production innovation, and has been described as "one of the most successful eco-labelling programs in the world" (Giovannucci, 2005, p.12). Green Food provides a "middle way" between chemical and organic farming. China's development of the Green Food concept resolves issues with both chemical and organic agriculture - for the former by offering reduced pesticide use, and for the latter by providing a stepped pathway for conversion from chemical to organic agriculture while simultaneously providing a Green Food price premium. After nearly two decades of development, Green Food is by now well known to Chinese consumers, and is readily available for retail purchase in China. China has 10 million hectares (150 million mu) of...

Detection of feral GT73 transgenic oilseed rape (Brassica napus) along railway lines on entry routes to oilseed factories in Switzerland Organic Eprints
Hecht, Mirco; Oehen, Bernadette; Schulze, Jürg; Brodmann, Peter; Bagutti, Claudia.
To obtain a reference status prior to cultivation of genetically modified oilseed rape (OSR, Brassica napus L.) in Switzerland, the occurrence of feral OSR was monitored along transportation routes and at processing sites. The focus was set on the detection of (transgenic) OSR along railway lines from the Swiss borders with Italy and France to the respective oilseed processing factories in Southern and Northern Switzerland (Ticino and region of Basel). A monitoring concept was developed to identify sites of largest risk of escape of genetically modified plants into the environment in Switzerland. Transport spillage of OSR seeds from railway goods cars particularly at risk hot spots such as switch yards and (un)loading points but also incidental and...
