A 3-year survey was made of several biological markers in mussels (Mytilus edulis) exposed in situ to the oil that came ashore after the wreck of the "Erika" tanker on the Brittany (France) coast in December 1999. The mussel response was assessed using a set of 7 biomarkers, most of them related to the metabolism of organic contaminants. After a series of validation tests, data was evaluated for only 5 biomarkers: acety1cholinesterase (AChE), glutathione S-transferase (GST), catalase (CAT), malondialdehyde (MDA) and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) adducts. No significant reductions in GST or CAT levels were observed, levels of DNA adducts and MDA were high during the 6 months immediately following the accident and levels of AChE were significantly lower during... |

he overall objective of the BELCANTO III project was to conduct targeted process studies and develop new proxies to construct and validate a realistic 3D ice-ocean biogeochemical model for the area south of latitude 30°S, based on improved understanding of the different factors regulating interactions between the atmosphere, ocean circulation and biogeochemical cycles and on synthesis/collection of existing/new data sets. The specific objectives were: - to improve our understanding about the iron cycling, with focus on the significance of iron-organic matter interactions for iron bioavailability and the efficiency of the biological pump (WP1) - to quantify nutrient consumption, CO2 uptake and C-export by assessing seasonality and interannuality of nutrient... |

Understanding the global carbon (C) cycle is of crucial importance to map current and future climate dynamics relative to global environmental change. A full characterization of C cycling requires detailed information on spatiotemporal patterns of surface-atmosphere fluxes. However, relevant C cycle observations are highly variable in their coverage and reporting standards. Especially problematic is the lack of integration of the carbon dioxide (CO2) exchange of the ocean, inland freshwaters and the land surface with the atmosphere. Here we adopt a data-driven approach to synthesize a wide range of observation-based spatially explicit surface-atmosphere CO2 fluxes from 2001 to 2010, to identify the state of today's observational opportunities and data... |

Fish-aggregating devices (FADs) are increasingly used worldwide to enhance tuna catches. Meanwhile, ecosystem-based management of this fishery is constrained by a paucity of information regarding the interaction of FAD-associated tuna aggregations with their local environment. This paper reports the results of a nine-month study around a FAD moored near Martinique Island, aimed at assessing the effects of the local environment on the variability of monthly estimates of proximate tuna biomass. Dual-frequency, active acoustics provided highresolution quantitative data on the pelagic community around the FAD, from fish to micronekton forage. Geostatistics were used to compute biomass estimates of the tuna aggregation comprising most of the FADassociated fish... |

Cockle (Cerastoderma edule) growth has not been studied a lot yet and the current approach of counting external ridges in order to make age estimation is limited. Nevertheless, growth is a key parameter for monitoring bivalves populations, which are heavily exploited in French estuaries. The Bay of Somme which is located in the eastern Channel in the north of France, is the first French field of cockles (Cerastoderma edule). In order to improve stock management, it is necessary to increase our knowledge of this species. This study is looking at the growth of the common cockle. In this way, recapture of shells previously marked under calcein marker and then breed in natural conditions in the Bay of Somme, was performed in order to determine the shell... |

The effects of climate and fishing on marine ecosystems have usually been studied separately, but their interactions make ecosystem dynamics difficult to understand and predict. Of particular interest to management, the potential synergism or antagonism between fishing pressure and climate forcing is analysed in this paper, using an end-to-end ecosystem model of the southern Benguela ecosystem, built from coupling hydrodynamic, biogeochemical and multispecies fish models (ROMS-N2P2Z2D2-OSMOSE). Scenarios of different intensities of upwelling-favourable wind stress combined with scenarios of fishing top-predator fish were tested. Analyses of isolated drivers show that the bottom-up effect of the climate forcing propagates up the food chain whereas the... |

Hydrological, ADCP, and drifting buoy data obtained during the GOGP99 Experiment in October and early November 1999 are analyzed to describe the Persian Gulf Water (PGW) core and the regional circulation in the Gulf of Oman. The warm and salty PGW core flows out of the Strait of Hormuz heading southeastward unto (25degrees20'N, 57degreesE), approximately. From there, it cascades down the continental slope, veers southwestward, and joins the Omani coast near (24degrees50'N, 56degrees50'E) to form a slope current. This PGW current has then thermohaline maxima on isopycnal sigma(0) = 26.5, near 220 m depth. Its thermohaline characteristics decrease along its progression to Ra's al Hadd ( and then offshore into the Arabian Sea) but maintain a sharp contrast... |

Red shrimp, Farfantepenaeus brasiliensis, larvae's response to different concentrations of live foods (diatoms Chaetoceros gracilis: 20-100 x 103 cells/mL; flagellate Tetraselmis chuii: 2-10 x 103 cells/mL and Artemia nauplii [NA]: 1-5 NA/mL) was investigated in three experiments. Experimental assessments were based on four variables: survival rate, weight gain, development index (DI), and resistance to salinity stress. A combination of C. gracilis 80 x 103 cells/mL, T. chuii 2 x 103 cells/mL, and Artemia 4 NA/mL provided the best experimental response. Specifically, F. brasiliensis larvae fed with the above-mentioned optimal concentrations of microalgae and Artemia grew faster and reached the postlarval stage in less time (168 h) than larvae in other... |

Spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has been demonstrated invaluable in observing the global ocean winds and waves. SAR images acquired by multiple sensors are employed, including Sentinel-1(S-1), Envisat/ASAR, Gaofen-3 and Radarsat-2. This thesis reviews the commonly used SAR parameters (NRCS and azimuth cutoff) in the first part. A series of calibration steps are required to obtain a proper NRCS and assessment of NRCS is carried out for S-1wave mode (WV). It turns out that WV is poorly calibrated and is thus re-calibrated to obtain accurate NRCS. Azimuth cut off is demonstrated to be complementary to NRCS and can account for the sea state impact on the wind retrieval. Based on the available fully polarimetric SAR products, azimuth cut off is found... |

The SEMAPHORE mesoscale air/sea experiment was conducted in the Azores-Madeira region from July to November 1993. TOPEX/POSEIDON (T/P) and ERS 1 were flying simultaneously at that time. The main purposes of this paper are to evaluate the estimation of the oceanic mesoscale circulation from the two different sets of altimetric data (T/P and ERS 1) and to compare the results with in situ measurements provided by the SEMAPHORE hydrographic surveys and surface drifters (three expendable bathytermograph conductivity-temperature-depth surveys in a 500-km(2) box and a set of 47 Lagrangian surface drifters drogued at 150 m). Comparisons are carried out through the maps obtained by objective analysis from the four data sets. The mapping accuracy of T/P, ERS 1, T/P... |
