Development of weight grader for dehusked coconut CIGR Journal
Monicka, A.Asha; Pandiarajan, T; Solomon, A. Brusly; Ganapathy, S.
Manual grading of dehusked coconut often leads to low profit than expected by the farmers. Appropriate grading systems guarantee a better income for the coconut growers. Therefore, a simple machine was designed and developed to grade the de-husked coconut based on its weight. The developed grader consists of an electronic weighing assembly, carrier cups with four bar linkage mechanism, proximity sensor, pneumatic actuators, and drive mechanism. Before the fabrication of grader, the tilt angle of carrier cup mechanism was optimised to ensure a free falling behaviour of dehusked coconut. The performance test of weight grader was conducted by varying the angular velocities of carrier cups (12, 14 and 16 rad/min) and signal settling time of the load cell (2, 3...

Insights into the genetic diversity of the leopard seal (Hydrurga leptonyx), inferred from mitochondrial DNA analysis, at Danco Coast, Antarctic Peninsula Boletín de Investigaciones
Hernández-Ardila,Laura Valentina; Barragán-Barrera,Dalia C.; Negrete,Javier; Poljak,Sebastián; Riet-Sapriza,Federico G.; Caballero,Susana.
ABSTRACT The leopard seal (Hydrurga leptonyx) is a genetically low-studied species. In order to conduct the first genetic diversity assessment of this species in Danco Coast (Antarctic Peninsula), 423 bp of the mitochondrial DNA Control Region (mtDNA-CR) was sequenced from 13 blood samples collected in Primavera Base (62º15’S, 58º39’W) during the 2011-2012 austral summer. Our results showed high haplotype diversity (h = 0.99), with various divergent haplotypes. Our findings suggest that leopard seals in the Danco Coast could represent different phylogroups; however, including more genetic markers are needed to confirm this hypothesis.

Trophic habits of the flounder Citharichthys gilberti (Paralichthyidae) and its spatiotemporal variability in Buenaventura Bay, Colombian Pacific Boletín de Investigaciones
García-Cardona,Evelin; Molina,Andrés; Duque,Guillermo.
ABSTRACT Fishes belonging to the order Pleuronectiformes, are flattened and inhabit estuarine bottoms. They are important because they provide an energy exchange between the demersal habitat and the water column, reflecting the effects of environmental variations in the ecosystem and the dynamics of trophic relation between species. This research evaluates the influence that some space-time variations have on the diet of Citharichthys gilberti in Buenaventura Bay. 92 stomachs corresponding to sites with different environmental characteristics within the Bay were examined. Feeding indices were determined to make a trophic characterization and evaluate the interactions between trophic habits and environmental variables. The prey with the highest relative...

Glacimarine sediment flows in small bays on the Danco Coast, Antarctic Peninsula Boletín de Investigaciones
Rodrigo,Cristian; Varas-Gómez,Andrés; Grisales,César; Quintana-Saavedra,Diana; Molares,Ricardo.
ABSTRACT Global atmospheric warming and rising ocean temperatures can contribute to the acceleration of glacier melting and influence the generation and physical characteristics of sediment flows in bays and fjords of the Antarctic Peninsula. During the First Scientific Expedition of Colombia to the Antarctic, carried out between January and February 2015, hydrographic variables (temperature, salinity, pressure and turbidity) were measured in the water column, from very close to the main glacier front towards the offshore, on 5 bays of the Danco Coast, Western Antarctic Peninsula. Glacimarine sediment plumes from the tidewater glacier were identified in all bays, however, with varying spatial extensions as well as the concentration of sediments, being...

Delimitation and classification of coastal wetlands: Implications for the environmental management of the Colombian Continental Caribbean Boletín de Investigaciones
Millán,Santiago; Rodríguez-Rodríguez,Jenny Alexandra; Sierra-Correa,Paula.
ABSTRACT This article describes the cartographic layer construction process of Colombian Caribbean coastal wetlands at a scale of 1:100,000 and the results obtained in terms of their quantification and typing. Two cartographic layers were constructed and subsequently joined, one of the permanent water bodies and another of temporary water bodies and associated coverages. The layers were generated by multitemporal analysis of 45 Landsat 8-OLI satellite images, based on the NDVI index, uncertainty models by superposition of cartographic attributes, and a flood frequency consultation model on ALOS PALSAR 1 images. As a result, 576,279 ha of coastal wetlands were delimited (1.9 % of total wetlands in Colombia), of which 20.4 % are within protected areas. The...

Hermaphroditism of bivalves Anadara tuberculosa and Anadara similis Sowerby 1883 (Arcidae) in Colombian Pacific mangroves Boletín de Investigaciones
Lucero Rincon,Carlos H.; Cantera Kintz,Jaime R.; Gil-Agudelo,Diego L..
ABSTRACT The hermaphrodite condition of the cockles Anadara tuberculosa and Anadara similis, gonochoric species living in mangroves of the Pacific coast of Colombia, are described in this paper. The gonads of 290 individuals of A. tuberculosa and 336 individuals of A. similis collected in five localities of the Colombian Pacific coast were analyzed using histological methods. Our results exposed that 3.1 % of A. tuberculosa and 3.0 % of A. similis analyzed showed signs of both ovules and spermatozoids, as well as simultaneous sexual maturation. Based on this frequency of occurrence of hermaphrodite individuals and the fact that hermaphrodite organisms were present in most of the sampling sites, we conclude that hermaphroditism is a normal rather than...

Determination of sexual dimorphism using morphometric techniques in Rachycentron canadum (Perciformes: Rachycentridae) cultivated in captivity Boletín de Investigaciones
González G.,Roy; Bermúdez Tobón,Adriana; Navas-S.,Gabriel R..
ABSTRACT Rachycentron canadum is an economically important fish in aquaculture due to its resistance to environmental variations, the feasibility of culture in confinement, high growth rates, and good acceptance by consumers. The profitability of their cage culture is negatively affected by the difficulty of implementing monosex cultures due to the apparent similarity between sexes. In this study, morphometric techniques were used to determine sexual dimorphism by analyzing measurements and the fish’s shape. Differences were found between the sexes in the position of the eyes, lips, pectoral fin and ventral fin, and the body’s general shape. The sexing precision of the individuals was 75.4 % with distances and 82.7 % with geometric morphometry.

Cortés,Juan Sebastián; Campos,Néstor Hernando; Bolaño-Lara,Maryela.
ABSTRACT The presence of parasitic crustaceans of the order Tantulocarida in the Caribbean Sea is reported for the first time. The organisms were found parasitizing a Cumacea of the genus Eudorellla and two Tanaidaceans of the genus Tanaella, between 2,420 and 2,786 m deep. The organisms came from the benthic community samplings made in Ocean Caribbean ecoregion (COC), in a hydrocarbon exploration area. The organisms were analyzed in the laboratory with an optical microscope and stereoscope; photographs were taken, and diagrams were made to describe the main morphological and morphometric characters. Four tantulocaridans were found, of which one was male and the other sexual females. Due to host-parasite specificity and the lack of reports in the Caribbean...

Identification of phytoplankton blooms in the Gerlache Strait, West Antarctic Peninsula Boletín de Investigaciones
Cañón Páez,Mary Luz; Santamaría del Ángel,Eduardo.
ABSTRACT In order to identify phytoplankton blooms, the inherent optical properties index (IOPIndex) was used in surface water samples and the maximum chlorophyll-a (MPC) that were taken in the Third (January 2017) and in the Fourth Expedition (January 2018) from Colombia to Antarctica in the Gerlache Strait (EG). The IOPIndex is calculated from the standardized spatial anomalies of the phytoplankton, detritus and colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) absorption coefficients using wavelength 443. In addition, the phytoplankton size index was calculated using the Blue / Red ratio and this related to the IOPIndex to determine the size structure of the phytoplankton responsible for the blooms. In 2017, four stations were identified under bloom conditions,...

Payment scheme for environmental services as a management strategy to regulate artisanal fishing in the Integrated Management District Cispata, Colombia Boletín de Investigaciones
López Navarro,Johann; Contreras Araque,Andrea.
ABSTRACT Marine and coastal ecosystems are characterized as highly productive areas in terms of the benefits they provide to humanity, with food provision being one of the most important. In 2018, in the Cispata Integrated Management District (DMI Cispata), due to the decrease in fishing resources, artisanal fishermen signed agreements for the recovery of the resource; however, they have not been implemented for various reasons. This study shows the viability of a Payment Scheme for Environmental Services as an alternative to induce compliance with fishing agreements. The analysis developed here indicates that the DMI Cispata fulfills the necessary conditions to implement this economic instrument benefiting 20 fishing organizations in the area.

Design of an oceanographic sampling network for the Malpelo Fauna and Flora Sanctuary, Pacific of Colombia Boletín de Investigaciones
Herrera Carmona,Julio César; Cuéllar Chacón,Andrés; Giraldo López,Alan.
ABSTRACT In order to generate inputs for the management of the Sanctuary, the Pacific Territorial Directorate of National Natural Parks began in 2006 a monitoring of oceanographic conditions in the area. Currently, this monitoring has a sampling network of only six stations located 0.93 km (0.5 nm) and 1.85 km (1 nm) from the island, so it is not efficient due to the reduced distance between stations, and insufficient given the large extension of the Sanctuary. Therefore, a sampling network was designed based on Sea Surface Temperature (TSM) data taken in situ and derived from the Modis-Aqua remote sensor. The spatial autocorrelation structure was analyzed through a semi-variance function. The decision to choose the best sampling network among the...
