Soil microbial response to glucose and phosphorus addition under agricultural systems in the Brazilian Cerrado Anais da ABC (AABC)
FERREIRA,ADÃO S.; SANTOS,MARIA AMELIA DOS; CORRÊA,GILBERTO F..
Conventional tillage (CT) and no-tillage (NT) management systems alter soil nutrient availability and consequently modify soil microbial response to nutrient additions such as carbon (C) and phosphorus (P). The objective of this study is to evaluate microbial response to the addition of C (glucose) and P (Na2HPO4.7H2O) under CT and NT in the brazilian Cerrado. In response to glucose addition, the NT system yielded higher microbial respiration rates and glucose consumption than the CT system. The best microbial response to C addition was after 0 - 12 h incubation in NT and 0 - 24 h in CT. The addition of P produced higher demand under CT than NT. After incubation, biochemical indicators such as microbial respiration, glucose consumption, dehydrogenase...

VEBER,BRUNO; CAMARGO,ANDERSON; DALMAGRO,ANA PAULA; BONDE,HENRIQUE LUIS P.; MAGRO,DÉBORA D. DAL; LIMA,DANIELA D. DE; ZENI,ANA LÚCIA B..
Abstract Red cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata f. rubra DC.) extract has been demonstrated hypolipidemic and antioxidant capacity. Herein, we investigated the effect of red cabbage aqueous extract (RC) or fenofibrate (FF) in oxidative stress induced by Triton WR-1339 in rats. The antioxidant capacity was evaluated through the superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities and, thiobarbituric reactive species (TBARS) and protein carbonyl (PC) levels in erythrocytes, liver, kidneys, cerebral cortex and hippocampus of male rats. The alterations promoted by Triton WR-1339 in enzymatic antioxidant defense in the liver, kidneys and hippocampus were reversed by RC or FF treatments. The TBARS and PC levels...

Mesozoic dinosaurs from Brazil and their biogeographic implications Anais da ABC (AABC)
Bittencourt,Jonathas S.; Langer,Max C..
The record of dinosaur body-fossils in the Brazilian Mesozoic is restricted to the Triassic of Rio Grande do Sul and Cretaceous of various parts of the country. This includes 21 named species, two of which were regarded as nomina dubia, and 19 consensually assigned to Dinosauria. Additional eight supraspecific taxa have been identified based on fragmentary specimens and numerous dinosaur footprints known in Brazil. In fact, most Brazilian specimens related to dinosaurs are composed of isolated teeth and vertebrae. Despite the increase of fieldwork during the last decade, there are still no dinosaur body-fossils of Jurassic age and the evidence of ornithischians in Brazil is very limited. Dinosaur faunas from this country are generally correlated with those...

Are the dinosauromorph femora from the Upper Triassic of Hayden Quarry (New Mexico) three stages in a growth series of a single taxon? Anais da ABC (AABC)
MÜLLER,RODRIGO T..
ABSTRACT The lagerpetid Dromomeron romeri and the theropod Tawa hallae are two dinosauromorphs from the Norian (Upper Triassic) of the Chinle Formation, situated in New Mexico, USA. However, a recent study suggests the inclusion of the holotype of D. romeri (GR 218) and paratype (GR 155) and referred (GR 235) specimens of T. hallae in an ontogenetic series of a single species. The specimens GR 218 and GR 155 include just an isolated femur, while GR235 includes femora, pelvis and tail. The inclusion of the specimens in an unique ontogenetic series relies on the putative immature condition and plastic deformation of the specimen GR 218. However, as observed here, the disparity between the femora of D. romeri and T. hallae is considerably higher than those...

Epigallocatechin-3-gallate combined with alpha lipoic acid attenuates high glucose-induced receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) expression in human embryonic kidney cells Anais da ABC (AABC)
Leu,Jyh-Gang; Lin,Chin-Yao; Jian,Jhin-Hao; Shih,Chin-Yu; Liang,Yao-Jen.
The anti-oxidant effects of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and alpha lipoic acid (ALA) have been demonstrated in previous studies. The kidney protection effects of EGCG and ALA in patients with kidney injury are still under investigation. The purpose of this study is to investigate the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects of EGCG and ALA on high glucose-induced human kidney cell damage. EGCG inhibited high glucose(HG)-induced TNF-α and IL-6 production in human embryonic kidney (HEK) cells. Both EGCG and ALA decreased HG-induced receptor of advanced glycation end products (RAGE) mRNA and protein expressions in HEK cells. EGCG and ALA also recovered HG-inhibited superoxide dismutase production and decreased ROS expressions in HEK cells. The synergism...

Contributions to the Dart versus Arrow Debate: New Data from Holocene Projectile Points from Southeastern and Southern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Okumura,Mercedes; Araujo,Astolfo G.M..
Lithic bifacial points are very common in the southern and southeastern regions of the Brazilian territory. Dated from Early to Late Holocene, these artifacts have not been studied in terms of their propulsion system. Given the characteristics of the bow and arrow compared to the atlatl and dart, there are important differences in the size and weight of arrowheads and dart points. Applying the techniques proposed by Shott (1997), Bradbury (1997), Fenenga (1953), Hughes (1998), and Hildebrandt and King (2012) to specimens recovered from eight sites dating from the early to the late Holocene, this work aims to present preliminary results to better understand the potential presence of darts and arrows in southeastern and southern Brazil. There was a variation...

The effect of exotic grass Urochloa decumbens (Stapf) R.D.Webster (Poaceae) in the reduction of species richness and change of floristic composition of natural regeneration in the Floresta Nacional de Carajás, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
FERREIRA,LEANDRO V.; PAROLIN,PIA; MATOS,DARLEY C.L.; CUNHA,DENISE A.; CHAVES,PRISCILLA P.; NECKEL,SELVINO O..
ABSTRACT The introduction of exotic species is considered as one of the major causes of biodiversity loss. The National Forest of Carajás is one of the largest mineral provinces in the world. Mining activities caused changes of the natural habitats, leaving degraded areas after the mineral exploitation. One of the mining areas within FLONA Carajás was used for the extraction of gold. In the process of exploitation, a huge depression was formed by the removal of soil which was mounded up nearby. To prevent soil erosion of these mounds, an exotic grass, Urochloa decumbens (Stapf) R.D.Webster (Poaceae) was planted. The objective of this study was to compare the impact of this non-native grass on species richness and species composition of the natural...

Fish Immunology. The modification and manipulation of the innate immune system: Brazilian studies Anais da ABC (AABC)
BILLER-TAKAHASHI,JAQUELINE D.; URBINATI,ELISABETH C..
The understanding of fish immune system structure and function is essential for the development of new technologies and products to improve productivity. This is the first review on immune system of fish with Brazilian studies. Aquaculture in Brazil has shown massive growth in recent years due to methods of culture intensification. However, these procedures led to disease outbreaks, as well as the chemotherapy and the misuse of antibiotics. A viable alternative to avoid the use of chemicals and prevent economic losses is the administration of immunostimulants and prebiotcs, which act by increasing the innate immune system. In Brazil there is a lack of studies on fish immune system, except by some groups that have studied the effects of the immunostimulants...

Rezende,Bráulio L. A; Cecílio Filho,Arthur B; Barros Júnior,Aurélio P; Porto,Diego R. Q; Martins,Maria Inez E. G.
The economical analysis complements the evaluation of the intercrop systems efficiency, considering besides the physical production of crops, the price of products according to their quality classification and time of the year. Intercropping systems of lettuce and cucumber in two plant populations under greenhouse were economically evaluated in winter-spring, in Jaboticabal City, São Paulo State, Brazil. The total operating cost (TOC) of cucumber and lettuce as sole crop and intercropping were estimated, as well as gross revenue (GR) and operating profit (OP). The labor for the crops was the component with greater participation in the TOC of crops in intercropping and single crop. Greater GR and OP were observed in intercrops established by transplanting...

Antidiarrheal effect of extract from the bark of Combretum leprosum in mice Anais da ABC (AABC)
CAVALCANTI,PAULO M.S.; MARTINS,MARIA DO CARMO C.; NUNES,PAULO H.M.; ALVES FILHO,FRANCISCO C.; SILVA,JANYERSON D.P.; CAVALCANTI,SUZANA M.G..
Abstract This study investigated the effects of the ethanolic extract from the bark of Combretum leprosum (ECL) on intestinal transit and castor-oil induced diarrhea in mice. The oral administration of ECL (750 and 1000 mg/kg) slowed intestinal transit (ID50 of 455 mg/kg). The ECL (250-1000 mg/kg) reduced castor-oil induced diarrhea, in a time- and dose-dependent manner (p < 0.05). To determine if antidiarrheal effect of ECL involves α2-adrenergic or opioid receptor activation, the mice were pretreated with antagonists of these receptors, yohimbine or naloxone respectively. None of these drugs inhibited the antidiarrheal effect of ECL. To test if antidiarrheal effect of ECL is due to an antisecretory action, we realized the enteropooling assay on rats....

Tools used to estimate soil quality in coal combustion waste areas Anais da ABC (AABC)
SILVA JÚNIOR,FLAVIO M.R. DA; VARGAS,VERA M.F..
Soil is a highly complex environmental compartment that has suffered with the contamination of substances of various origins. Among the main activities that affect soil quality are power generation activities that use fossil fuels, such as mineral coal. Environmental protection agencies encourage scientific investigations using tools described in legal devices or standard protocols to evaluate the potential of coal as a pollutant, especially in places that have large reserves of this mineral like the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The aim of this study was to characterize the leached extracts of different soils from an area influenced by coal waste, to classify them according to the guideline values for groundwater described in CONAMA's n. 420/2009, and to...
