Mesozoic history of the Fairway-Aotea Basin: Implications for the early stages of Gondwana fragmentation ArchiMer
Collot, Julien; Herzer, R.; Lafoy, Y.; Geli, Louis.
The Fairway Ridge is a buried continental structure that separates the Fairway Basin from the New Caledonia Basin. The proposed Cretaceous age of the Fairway Basin has remained highly hypothetical to date. Deep offshore petroleum exploration wells revealed well-dated Mesozoic carbonaceous sedimentary rocks in the Taranaki Basin at the southern end of the Aotea Basin. In this paper we use geophysical data to confirm the continuity of the 2000 km long Fairway-Aotea Basin connecting New Caledonia to New Zealand and prove its early Late Cretaceous age. Analysis of seismic reflection profiles together with newly compiled gravity and magnetic maps reveals Late Cretaceous NE–SW trending lineaments projecting northeastward from major Tasman Sea fracture zones and...

Recent thecideide brachiopods from a submarine cave in the Department of Mayotte (France), northern Mozambique Channel ArchiMer
Simon, Eric; Hiller, Norton; Logan, Alan; Theuerkauff, Dimitri; Mottequin, Bernard.
For the first time large numbers of thecideide brachiopods have been collected from the Mozambique Channel, more particularly from the western part of the Comorian Island of Mayotte (France). The moderately diverse brachiopod fauna is from a submarine cave situated on the second barrier reef encircling this island, with three different genera being found: Thecidellina, Ospreyella and Minutella. The last genus is represented by M. cf. minuta (Cooper, 1981), which was first discovered around Madagascar. Ospreyella is represented by a new species (O. mayottensis sp. nov.) as is Thecidellina, which is represented by T. leipnitzae sp. nov. This species is markedly distinct from T. europa Logan et al., 2015 from Europa Island in the southern Mozambique Channel...

Effect of seasonal variation in trophic conditions and the gametogenic cycle on d13C and d15N levels of diploid and triploid Pacific oysters Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Malet, Nathalie; Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Faury, Nicole; Soletchnik, Patrick; Guillou, Gael.
Carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes were investigated in separate organs of diploid and sterile triploid Pacific oysters Crassostrea gigas for 13 mo, together with changes in chemical and isotope composition of suspended matter sampled from an intertidal mudflat within Marennes-Oléron Bay, France. Particulate organic matter (POM) was a mixture of pelagic and benthic material with a predominance of neritic phytoplankton in spring, and resuspended microphytobenthos in summer and autumn. A remarkable shift of +30/00 in d13C was reflected in both diploids and triploids from spring to summer, and further temporal differences were observed amongst their tissues. Seasonal changes in POM d15N were also reflected in oyster tissues, with digestive gland and muscle...

Automatic scale estimation of structure from motion based 3D models using laser scalers in underwater scenarios ArchiMer
Istenič, Klemen; Gracias, Nuno; Arnaubec, Aurelien; Escartín, Javier; Garcia, Rafael.
Improvements in structure-from-motion techniques are enabling many scientific fields to benefit from the routine creation of detailed 3D models. However, for a large number of applications, only a single camera is available for the image acquisition, due to cost or space constraints in the survey platforms. Monocular structure-from-motion raises the issue of properly estimating the scale of the 3D models, in order to later use those models for metrology. The scale can be determined from the presence of visible objects of known dimensions, or from information on the magnitude of the camera motion provided by other sensors, such as GPS. This paper addresses the problem of accurately scaling 3D models created from monocular cameras in GPS-denied environments,...

Sibuet, Jean-claude.
Based on the geological and geophysical data on North-East Atlantic margins, the aim of this study is to define the directions of the extension of the different margin segments, and then to constrain the margin formation models in order to try and quantify the extension. The proposed scheme is to try and integrate the available geological and geophysical constraints, keeping in mind that the future data on the deep structure of the margins could quickly lead us to reconsider it. The first kinematical consequences of this scheme are examined. (unverified OCR)

The maintenance costs of marine natural capital: A case study from the initial assessment of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive in France ArchiMer
Levrel, Harold; Jacob, Celine; Bailly, Denis; Charles, Mahe; Guyader, Olivier; Aoubid, Scheherazade; Bas, Adeline; Cujus, Alexia; Fresard, Marjolaine; Girard, Sophie; Hay, Julien; Laurans, Yann; Paillet, Jerome; Agundez, Jose A. Perez; Mongruel, Remi.
There are two ways of assessing the costs of environmental degradation: as the costs associated with the loss of benefits resulting from the degradation of natural capital, and as the maintenance costs required to compensate for the actual or potential degradation of natural capital. The first of these methods is based on the Total Economic Value (TEV) of benefits forgone because of the depletion of ecosystem services delivered by marine biodiversity. The second method is based on the costs required to maintain a good state of marine biodiversity, one which makes it possible to deliver ecosystem services. This paper gives an illustration of this second approach. It details how these maintenance costs have been calculated in the initial assessment of the...

Impact of a medicane on the oceanic surface layer from a coupled, kilometre-scale simulation ArchiMer
Bouin, Marie-noëlle; Lebeaupin Brossier, Cindy.
A kilometre-scale coupled ocean–atmosphere numerical simulation is used to study the impact of the 7 November 2014 medicane on the oceanic upper layer. The processes at play are elucidated through analyses of the tendency terms for temperature and salinity in the oceanic mixed layer. While comparable by its maximum wind speed to a Category 1 tropical cyclone, the medicane results in a substantially weaker cooling. As in weak to moderate tropical cyclones, the dominant contribution to the surface cooling is the surface heat fluxes with secondary effects from the turbulent mixing and lateral advection. Upper-layer salinity decreases due to heavy precipitation that overcompensates the salinizing effect of evaporation and turbulent mixing. The upper-layer...

Mongruel, Remi; Perez Agundez, José A.; Girard, Sophie; Bailly, Denis; Nassiri, Abdelhamid.
1. The ASTRODOME research project aims to study the economic aspects of the system of allocation and transmission of shellfish concessions, which is considered as an essential element in the understanding of the occupancy strategies of the coastal maritime space. Two series of questions are highlighted. The first series examines the system from a sectorial development point of view: what are the shellfish farmers' needs that the implementation of a quasi concession market satisfied, and to a larger extent, what is the contribution of the evolution of the system of allocation and transmission of concessions to the evolution of the sector's structure? The second series takes a look at the system from a collective interest point of view: to what extent does...

Ponis, Emanuele; Parisi, Guilina; Robert, Rene.
In an attempt to simplify mollusc hatchery-nursery procedures and to provide cost-effective alternative diets, the use of concentrated and preserved microalgae is an alternative to the use of fresh microalgae. Because of their ability for preservation, Prasinophytes appears to be good candidates for remote algal production. In the present work, the food value of fresh and preserved Tetraselmis chui and T. striata for umboned Crassostrea gigas larvae was studied. During the first experiment, fresh T. striata led to the best larval development, but these performances were not confirmed subsequently. When used as monospecific diets the food value of both Prasinophytes is unsufficient to support a good C. gigas larval development. However in bispecific diets a...

Enhanced supply of fossil organic carbon to the Okinawa Trough since the last deglaciation ArchiMer
Kao, S. J.; Dai, M. H.; Wei, K. Y.; Blair, N. E.; Lyons, W. B..
Significantly older C-14 ages by 2500-7900 years are found for sedimentary total organic carbon (TOC) when compared to ages of codeposited surface-dwelling foraminifera in the southern Okinawa Trough. This age discrepancy increases with rising sea level since the Last Glacial Maximum. A progressive shift in TOC delta C-13 toward more negative values with rising sea level reflects an increasing fractional contribution of terrestrial organics (soil organics, plant debris, and/or fossil organics) to the buried organic pool. Organic matter previously stored on the East China Sea shelf during sea level lowstand and riverine material from Taiwan may be the sources that cause the delta C-13(TOC) to shift to more terrestrial values. During the Holocene when sea...

Impact of global ocean model resolution on sea-level variability with emphasis on interannual time scales ArchiMer
Penduff, Thierry; Juza, Melanie; Brodeau, L.; Smith, G. C.; Barnier, B.; Molines, J. -m.; Treguier, Anne-marie; Madec, Gerard.
Four global ocean/sea-ice simulations driven by the same realistic 47-year daily atmospheric forcing were performed by the DRAKKAR group at 2 degrees, 1 degrees, 1/2 degrees, and 1/4 degrees resolutions. Simulated mean sea-surface heights (MSSH) and sea-level anomalies (SLA) are collocated over the period 1993-2004 onto the AVISO dataset. MSSH fields are compared with an inverse estimate. SLA datasets are filtered and compared over various time and space scales with AVISO regarding three characteristics: SLA standard deviations, spatial correlations between SLA variability maps, and temporal correlations between observed and simulated band-passed filtered local SLA timeseries. Beyond the 2 degrees-1 degrees transition whose benefits are moderate, further...

The "BOUée pour l'acquiSition d'une Série Optique à Long termE" project (BOUSSOLE), can be translated from French as the “buoy for the acquisition of a long-‐term optical series." It involves monthly servicing cruises to an offshore site between Nice and Corsica where a buoy dedicated to radiometric measurements acquires data continuously. During these visits, the activities are dedicated to the buoy servicing and to the acquisition of complementary data such as vertical profiles of radiometric quantities, phytoplankton pigments (HPLC), particulate absorption (filter pad technique), total suspended matter etc…(Antoine et al., 2006). These latter three parameters are obtained thanks to in situ sampling of seawater at 11 depths throughout the euphotic layer...

In this study, the life cycle of Paracartia grani, a calalloid copepod belonging to the Acartiidae family was determined in Thau lagoon. Indeed, the copepod involvement in the life cycle of the parasite Marteilia refringens affecting the bivalve productions is suspected. Mesozooplanktonic community .was monitored twice a month. over two years at a fixed station in the lagoon. Sampling has identified P. grani as the acartiid dominant species in summer. From April to January, the copepod is found in the water column while from February to early April it remains in the sediment as diapausing eggs. The analysis of the population structure (size spectmm, contribution of developmental stages and sex ratio) has revealed that there are in between 6 and 9...

A multivariate indicator to monitor changes in spatial patterns of age-structured fish populations ArchiMer
Petitgas, Pierre; Poulard, Jean-charles.
Quantitative analysis of the spatial patterns in age-structured fish populations provides a useful complement to stock assessment methods. The spatial distribution of an age-structured population is characterized by indicators for location, dispersion and aggregation, which are estimated from survey data. The times series of spatial indicators are organised in a 3D data structure with dimensions along indicators, age classes and years. Multi factor analysis (MFA) is applied to quantify the reproducibility in time of the multivariate structure between age classes and indicators. MFA computes the mean annual pattern over the age classes. The deviation around that pattern in each year is also quantified. A multivariate indicator that characterise the spatial...

Hydrocarbon pollution along Moroccan coasts and BPH activity in the mussel Perna perna ArchiMer
Azdi, M.; Moukrim, A.; Burgeot, Thierry; Budzinski, H.; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Kaaya, A.; Zekhnini, A.; Narbonne, J. F.; Guarrigues, Ph..
Specimens of the mussel Perna perna were collected along Moroccan coasts to determine the concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons ( PAHs) bioaccumulated in the tissues, and to measure benzo[ a] pyrene hydroxylase (BPH) activity. Chemical analysis of PAHs show that the Mediterranean (Nador, Martil, Tanger) and central Atlantic coasts ( from Rabat to Jorf Lihoudi) are those most contaminated ( 351 245 ng.g(-1) dry weight in Tanger). The mussel contaminants were of mixed origin for most of the locations with non negligible inputs of petrogenic origin in many of them. Baseline levels of PAHs were between 6 and 55 ng.g(-1) dry weight. BPH activity showed significant correlation (r(s) = 0.64, P < 0.05) with total PAH concentrations at the six most...
