Global temperature calibration of the alkenone unsaturation index (U(37)(K ')) in surface waters and comparison with surface sediments ArchiMer
Conte, Mh; Sicre, Ma; Ruhlemann, C; Weber, Jc; Schulte, S; Schulz-bull, D; Blanz, T.
[1] In this paper, we compile the current surface seawater C(37) alkenone unsaturation (U(37)(K')) measurements ( n = 629, - 1 to 30 degrees C temperature range) to derive a global, field-based calibration of U(37)(K') with alkenone production temperature. A single nonlinear "global'' surface water calibration of U(37)(K') accurately predicts alkenone production temperatures over the diversity of modern-day oceanic environments and alkenone-synthesizing populations (T = - 0.957 + 54.293(U(37)(K')) - 52.894(U(37)(K'))(2) + 28.321(U(37)(K'))(3), r(2) = 0.97, n = 567). The mean standard error of estimation is 1.2 degrees C with insignificant bias in estimated production temperature among the different ocean regions sampled. An exception to these trends is...

Effets de la surcharge en seston minéral sur les palourdes Japonaises adultes Ruditapes philippinarum ArchiMer
Daou, Rafik.
Negative effects of high turbidity, frequently seen at Marennes-Oleron bay in winter, on Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum are experimentally studied with two samples during gametogenetic period may september 1987. Thes clams reared at high level of silt (178 mg/l) reduce their growth to about 32% the reproductive effort estimated by gameto-somatic weight index is reduced to 40 %. The high turbid ity is responsible of a twice mortality rate.

Diet, feeding behaviour and trophic activity of the anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus L.) in the Gulf of Lions (Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer
Plounevez, Serge; Champalbert, Gisèle.
Feeding behaviour of adult European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) was studied in the Gulf of Lions (northwestern Mediterranean Sea) in relation to major abiotic and biotic factors. Observations were made during the main spawning period (summer) for two years, data were collected through hydrological pro-tiling, zooplankton hauls and fish trawling performed in areas of high anchovy density. Temperature, salinity and zooplankton biomass were stratified in the study areas, with cladocerans numerous above the thermocline whereas copepods were dominant below. Engraulis encrasicolus was strictly zooplanctivorous during the main spawning season with copepod and crustacean larvae dominating in stomach contents. Anchovy exhibited high trophic activity during the...

Short-term transport variability of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current from satellite gravity observations ArchiMer
Bergmann, I.; Dobslaw, H..
Ocean bottom pressure gradients deduced from the satellite gravity mission Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) were previously shown to provide barotropic transport variations of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) with up to monthly resolution. Here, bottom pressure distributions from GRACE with monthly (GFZ RL04) and higher temporal resolution (CNES/GRGS with 10 days, ITG-GRACE2010 with daily resolution) are evaluated over the ACC area. Even on time scales shorter than 10 days, correlations with in situ bottom pressure records frequently exceed 0.6 with positive explained variances, giving evidence that high-frequency nontidal ocean mass variability is captured by the daily ITG-GRACE2010 solutions not already included in the applied...

A coupled biophysical model for the distribution of the great scallop Pecten maximus in the English Channel ArchiMer
Le Goff, Clement; Lavaud, Romain; Cugier, Philippe; Jean, Fred; Flye-sainte-marie, Jonathan; Foucher, Eric; Desroy, Nicolas; Fifas, Spyros; Foveau, Aurelie.
In this paper we used a modelling approach integrating both physical and biological constraints to understand the biogeographical distribution of the great scallop Pecten maximus in the English Channel during its whole life cycle. A 3D bio-hydrodynamical model (ECO-MARS3D) providing environmental conditions was coupled to (i) a population dynamics model and (ii) an individual ecophysiological model (Dynamic Energy Budget model). We performed the coupling sequentially, which underlined the respective role of biological and physical factors in defining P. maximus distribution in the English Channel. Results show that larval dispersion by hydrodynamics explains most of the scallop distribution and enlighten the main known hotspots for the population,...

Are EU log-books suitable to compute size frequencies of bluefin tuna catches of the French purse seiners? ArchiMer
Fromentin, Jean-marc.
The 2001 size composition of Atlantic bluefin tuna catches of the French purse seiners has been estimated from the EU log-books and appears roughly in agreement with those estimated from the local seafood traders between 1982 and 1998. However, the accuracy of the 2001 size composition remains uncertain because of a lack of a standard protocol and of sampling on catch coming from heterogeneous and/or multiple shoals. Regarding the spatial and temporal dynamic of the French fishery, an observer program should be implemented to correct and validate the size frequencies of these catches.

The year 2014 marks the mid-point between the launch of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) and the goal of Good Environmental Status (GES) in 2020. Although a lot of progress has been made, the current use of Europe’s seas is not sustainable. In its recent publication called ‘Marine Messages’ (EEA, 2014), the European Environment Agency recommended that “urgent action and protection of the seas and ocean should be top of the EU agenda”. In addition, the European Commission Healthy Oceans – Productive Ecosystems (HOPE) conference declaration1 urged political leaders “…to turn words into action and encourage all stakeholders, including the private sector, to take the measures necessary to deliver “Good Environmental Status” for Europe’s seas and...

A survey involving both permanent mooring and high frequency sampling was carried in the Bay of Banyuls-sur-Mer during the fall of 1999 to assess the effect of strong and unpredictable meteorological events on the functioning of a coastal Mediterranean ecosystem. A severe winter storm took place on 12 November, which generated waves with a significant height of 7 m and a sea surface rise of about 0.5 m. The near-bottom current speed at 24 m reached 30 cm s(-1). This storm induced a significant increase in total suspended matter through resuspension and then a subsequent increase in gross sedimentation rates. It also resulted in an increase of the proportion of refractory particulate organic matter in the water column. It...

Culture site dependence on pearl size realization in Pinctada margaritifera in relation to recipient oyster growth and mantle graft biomineralization gene expression using the same donor phenotype ArchiMer
Le Pabic, Lore; Parrad, Sophie; Sham Koua, Manaarii; Nakasai, Seiji; Saulnier, Denis; Devaux, Dominique; Ky, Chin-long.
Size is the most important and valuable quality of the cultured black-lip pearl, Pinctada margaritifera. As this pearl aquaculture is carried out at numerous grow-out sites, this study analyzes the environmental influence on pearl size parameters (nacre weight and thickness) in relation to the recipient oyster biometric parameters (shell thickness, height, width, and oyster weight) at harvest time. Toward this end, an experimental graft was designed by using a homogeneous donor oyster phenotype. The recipient oysters were randomly and equally transferred and reared in five commercial and contrasting grow-out locations. Overall inter-site comparisons revealed that the cultured pearl size (N=2168) and the biometric parameters of the recipient oysters were...

Primers and polymerase chain reaction conditions for DNA barcoding teleost fish based on the mitochondrial cytochrome b and nuclear rhodopsin genes ArchiMer
Sevilla, Rafael G.; Diez, Amalia; Noren, Michael; Mouchel, Olivier; Jerome, Marc; Verrez-bagnis, Veronique; Van Pelt, Hilde; Favre Krey, Laurence; Krey, Grigorios; Bautista, José M..
This report describes a set of 21 polymerase chain reaction primers and amplification conditions developed to barcode practically any teleost fish species according to their mitochondrial cytochrome b and nuclear rhodopsin gene sequences. The method was successfully tested in more than 200 marine fish species comprising the main Actinopterygii family groups. When used in phylogenetic analyses, its combination of two genes with different evolutionary rates serves to identify fish at the species level. We provide a flow diagram indicating our validated polymerase chain reaction amplification conditions for barcoding and species identification applications as well as population structure or haplotyping analyses, adaptable to high-throughput analyses.

A long term study of bonamiosis in Quiberon bay, France ArchiMer
Arzul, Isabelle; Miossec, Laurence; Blanchet, Estelle; Garcia, Celine; Joly, Jean-pierre; Francois, Cyrille; Berthe, Franck.
Bonamiosis was first reported in association with mass mortality of flat oysters, Ostrea edulis, in June 1979 in L'Ile Tudy, Brittany. The disease rapidly spread to all of the oyster farming areas in France but also in other European countries. The French flat oyster production, which already suffered from another protozoan disease, marteiliosis, decreased from 5500 mt in 1979 to less than 2000 mt after 1980. In 2001, about 350 French farms sell 1650 mt of flat oysters. This production mainly relies on natural spat collection which specially occurs in Quiberon bay. One third of this spat is transferred from South to North Brittany for further growth. Quiberon bay constitutes an interesting site regarding the surveillance of bonamiosis because of the...

La capture des thons dans les régions sud-atlantiques et méditerranéennes de l'Espagne ArchiMer
San Feliu, J.m..
We described the main fishing techniques used on the Spanish South-Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts to catch tuna. We gathered information on the location of the fixed nets and their characteristics, the fishing gear (ring nets, lines), the fishing periods, etc... The tuna fishing production was studied, in weight, but also in value, in the South-Atlantic area. We compared the catches obtained with fixed nets and those conducted with other types of fishing gear over the 1956-1975 period. While the first ones showed a decreasing production (from 8 789 t in 1956 to only 447 t in 1975), the others went from 84 t in 1956 to 10 857 t in 1975. We also compared the catches of bluefin tuna and albacore in this region, and observed the almost total extinction of...
