We investigate a case of ocean waves through a pack ice cover captured by Sentinel-1A synthetic aperture radar (SAR) on 12 October 2015 in the Beaufort Sea. The study domain is 400 km by 300 km, adjacent to a marginal ice zone (MIZ). The wave spectra in this domain were reported in a previous study (Stopa et al., 2018b). In that study, the authors divided the domain into two regions delineated by the first appearance of leads (FAL) and reported a clear change of wave attenuation of the total energy between the two regions. In the present study, we use the same dataset to study the spectral attenuation in the domain. According to the quality of SAR-retrieved wave spectrum, we focus on a range of wave numbers corresponding to 9–15 s waves from the open-water... |

In the frame of a national, joint scientific appraisal, 45 scientific French-speaking experts have been mandated in 2015–2016 by the French ministries of Environment and Agriculture to perform a global review of scientific literature dealing with the eutrophication phenomenon, in freshwater as well as in marine waters. This paper summarizes the main results of this review restricted to a sub-domain, the modelling approach of the marine eutrophication. After recalling the different aims pursued, an overview is given on the historical time course of this modelling effort, its world distribution and the various tools used. Then, the main results obtained are examined, highlighting the specific strengths and weaknesses of the present models. Needs for future... |

On Languedoc shore, several hatcheries may be used at research and development level, to solve tuna aquaculture problems. Therefore, incubation and hatching of air-transported eggs collected on spawning ground with different technics are possible. Natural zooplancton now used to feed bass larvae in Sète is to be used for tuna rearing. |

The eastern Mediterranean sapropels are among the most intensively investigated phenomena in the paleoceanographic record, but relatively little has been written regarding the origin of the equivalent of the sapropels in the western Mediterranean, the organic-rich layers (ORLs). ORLs are recognized as sediment layers containing enhanced total organic carbon that extend throughout the deep basins of the western Mediterranean and are associated with enhanced total barium concentration and a reduced diversity (dysoxic but not anoxic) benthic foraminiferal assemblage. Consequently, it has been suggested that ORLs represent periods of enhanced productivity coupled with reduced deep ventilation, presumably related to increased continental runoff, in close... |

This study provides a detailed reconstruction of climatic events affecting a cold-water coral mound located within the East Melilla Coral Province (Southeast Alboran Sea) over the last 300 ky. Based on benthic foraminiferal assemblages, macrofaunal quantification, grain size analysis, sediment geochemistry, and foraminiferal stable isotope compositions, a reconstruction of environmental conditions prevailing in the region is proposed. The variations in planktonic and benthic δ18O values indicate that cold-water coral mound formation follows global climatic variability. Cold-water corals develop during both interglacial and glacial periods, although interglacial conditions would have allowed better proliferation. Environmental conditions during glacial... |

The species which have been identified in this Neolithic site are still living along the Bay of Biscay coasts. One of them, Haliotis , has recently disappeared from the Oleron Island. Some of them, as the very fruitful Patella and Monodonta lineata , have certainly been gathered and devoted to food. Others, as Nucella lapillus , have only been used to make pearls. And some others, Cardium for instance, could have been devoted at the same time to food and pearls. The study of the current biota of the different species allows the biologist to indicate where the shells might have lived: rocky or sandy shores, sheltered or exposed shores, intertidal or subtidal environment. The knowledge of the possible biota is an indication of the areas of the prehistoric... |

The variations of catalase activity, which is a biochemical biomarker of exposure to an oxidative stress, were followed month by month (from May 1998 to May 1999) in Mediterranean clams (Ruditapes decussatus) collected at three stations (J, A and F), and mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) collected at two stations (J and C) in Lake Bizerte (Tunisia). Several oceanographic parameters were measured together with catalase activity in the animals to evaluate the quality of waters in the lake. Whatever the station taken into consideration, catalase activity in clams significantly varied as a function of the season, with marked increases in September, when the quality of waters was poor. Clams originating from station A presented the highest mean activity... |

In recent years, thyroidal activity in Teleosts has been the focus of a significant amount of studies. This activity shows important variations through the year, and different authors managed to establish its seasonal cycle. Among them are: LIEBER (1936) in Misgurnus fossilis, HAGEN (1936) in Eel, HOAR (1939) and OLIVEREAU (1954) in Salmon, BUCHMANN (1940) in Clupea halengus, BARRINGTON and MATTY (1954) in Phoxinus phoxinus, SWIFT (1954) in Salmo trutta, WOODHEAD (1959) in Gadus callarias.... |

The objective of GHYDRO, a France Energies Marines project, is to draw up a methodology guide that provide stakeholders in tidal stream energy projects with decision-making help for the environmental integration of generators and tidal farms. The methodological guide currently represents a summary of the recommendations concerning the diverse physical parameters and biological compartments of the ecosystems that are potentially affected. The physical and biological compartments of the marine ecosystems have been addressed separately in the guide, in order to propose methodologies adapted to each one, in relation to the establishment of the initial state, the characterisation of the potential impacts and the environmental monitoring. To bring together the... |

Coming from Oriental Asia and Siberia, the Cyprinidae reached the Iberic Peninsula probably at the end of the Oligocene. Their populations bore speciation processes which led to the formation of a fauna rich in endemic species and subspecies. Populations of two of the genera Barbus and Pseudophoxinus reached Northwestern African forming there several endemic species. Concerning the speciation forms, it is probable that the allopatric form, whether by foundation effect or by subdivision, played an important part. Pyrenees and Mediterranean Sea settled probably efficient barriers for the Iberic Cyprinidae isolation. The present geographical repartition of Cyprinidae in Iberic Peninsula suggests that altitude lines and glaciations which reached the north of... |

Social foraging allows groups of predators to search for, pursue, and capture prey with greater efficiency than using solitary hunting. It can vary in complexity and take many forms ranging from cooperative hunting, to social information sharing and local enhancement (Lang and Farine 2017). Theoretical and empirical studies support the advantages of group foraging, although there will be trade‐offs between benefits, such as increased prey detection or capture success, and costs such as increased competition amongst group members (Gil et al. 2017). |
