Temporal evolution over ten years in the macrobenthos of muddy sands in the Bay of Concarneau (France) ArchiMer
Princz, D; Menesguen, A; Glemarec, M.
The temporal evolution of the Amphiura filiformis community of two stations in the Bay of Concarneau was followed during a period of ten years (1970-1979). A concomitance has been found between the demographic fluctuations of the community and the effects of climatic and hydrodynamic factors occurring in the bay throughout the observation period. At the end of the decade a decline of the Amphiura filiformis population and some qualitative changes in the community are observed.

Natural fluctuations in a rocky subtidal community in the Oslo Fjord (Norway) ArchiMer
Christie, H.
Natural variations were found to be governed by key species which structured the community. Of more than 60 species found, ca 10 were important in terms of abundance. Very few species exhibited stable abundance, and the community was dominated by annual cycles in populations mainly provided by seasonal settlement followed by predation and grazing, notably by Asterias rubens . Exclusion of this species lead to dramatic structral changes on artificial panels. Variation in abundance was analyzed using harmonic series plots. Models were produced for the most important species, and gave acceptable predictions when tested against the following year's data. Cyclic patterns appear annually, but suggestions long term trends were found to slightly alter this annual...

Boromtharanat, S; Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Heral, Maurice.
Observations on the gonads of 50 mm mussels, made during 1983 and 1984, showed that the onsert of gametogenesis occured during September and that the gonads reached maturity in December. Spawning took place from early February to April at temperatures from 10 to 12°C. The flesh had a high water content at the beginning of the spawning period. The pelagic live of the larvae lasts about 30 days with settlement occurring in June when some 90 and 100 spats settle on 1 cpm of rope per day. The intensity of recruitment was 56.10(4) and 722.10(4) larvaes on rope corresponding to a square meter during 1983, and between 28.10(4) and 81.10(4) during 1984.

Subgroup II PAK-mediated phosphorylation regulates Ran activity during mitosis ArchiMer
Bompard, Guillaume; Rabeharivelo, Gabriel; Frank, Marie; Cau, Julien; Delsert, Claude; Morin, Nathalie.
Ran is an essential GTPase that controls nucleocytoplasmic transport, mitosis, and nuclear envelope formation. These functions are regulated by interaction of Ran with different partners, and by formation of a Ran-GTP gradient emanating from chromatin. Here, we identify a novel level of Ran regulation. We show that Ran is a substrate for p21-activated kinase 4 (PAK4) and that its phosphorylation on serine-135 increases during mitosis. The endogenous phosphorylated Ran and active PAK4 dynamically associate with different components of the microtubule spindle during mitotic progression. A GDP-ound Ran phosphomimetic mutant cannot undergo RCC1-mediated GDP/GTP exchange and cannot induce microtubule asters in mitotic Xenopus egg extracts. Conversely,...

On the relative importance of space and environment in farmland bird community assembly ArchiMer
Henckel, Laura; Meynard, Christine N.; Devictor, Vincent; Mouquet, Nicolas; Bretagnolle, Vincent.
The relative contribution of ecological processes in shaping metacommunity dynamics in heavily managed landscapes is still unclear. Here we used two complementary approaches to disentangle the role of environment and spatial effect in farmland bird community assembly in an intensive agro-ecosystem. We hypothesized that the interaction between habitat patches and dispersal should play a major role in such unstable and unpredictable environments. First, we used a metacommunity patterns analysis to characterize species co-occurrences and identify the main drivers of community assembly; secondly, variation partitioning was used to disentangle environmental and geographical factors (such as dispersal limitation) on community structure and composition. We used...

Comparison of brown trout (Salmo trutta) reared in fresh water and sea water to freshwater rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss): II. Phosphorus balance ArchiMer
Dosdat, Antoine; Metailler, Robert; Desbruyeres, Elisabeth; Huelvan, Christine.
Brown trout and rainbow trout (average weight 100 g) were reared in fresh water at 12 degrees C under the same conditions before transferring brown trout to sea water, in order to compare phosphorus utilisation in both species. Apparent phosphorus availability, orthophosphate excretion and phosphorus accretion in the fish were directly determined. Thus, actual phosphorus mass balance was built. Rainbow trout raised in fresh water had a higher phosphorus retention coefficient (maximum 50 %) than brown trout reared in fresh water (maximum 45 %). Transferring brown trout to sea water induced a reduction in phosphorus retention (maximum 39 %), Orthophosphate excretion, ranging 7-20 mg phosphorus per kg wet weight per day, represented 10-20 % of ingested...

Arnaud, Christophe; Fillon, Alain.

This work is the preliminary synthesis of some toxicological tests conducted on three pesticides. This recapitulation would not have been possible without the contribution of our trainees, Misses V. Perles and H. Le Boulicot and MM. M. Falchier and G. Gaty who contributed largely to this study, supervised by the laboratory staff. The obtained results cannot be considered as definitive. The urge to answer the needs did not leave us enough time to fine tune and/or complete the results; for example we still have not determined the lethal dose for 50% of the individuals. [...]

Note on the use of an altimeter mean sea-surface for mesoscale variability studies ArchiMer
Blanc, Frederique; Le Traon, Pierre-yves.
This report discusses whether, by the year 1995, altimeter mean surfaces such as those generated by Geosat, ERS-1 [35 days] and Topex-Poseidon will be accurate enough for extracting the variable ocean signal. The mean oceanic signal is estimated from altimetry using an inverse method. Because of the large number of altimeter measurements, the original one-step method is transformed to a two-step method, the iterative inverse method. The space-time distribution of the altimeter data is only needed to calculate the formal error on the altimeter mean surface. Using a year of satellite altimeter measurements, the mean rms errors are 10 cm for Geosat, 8 cm for ERS- 1 and 13 cm for Topex-Poseidon. The along-track minima are respectively 8, 7 and
