Different secretory repertoires control the biomineralization processes of prism and nacre deposition of the pearl oyster shell ArchiMer
Marie, Benjamin; Joubert, Caroline; Tayale, Alexandre; Zanella-cleon, Isabelle; Belliard, Corinne; Piquemal, David; Cochennec-laureau, Nathalie; Marin, Frederic; Gueguen, Yannick; Montagnani, Caroline.
Mollusca evolutionary success can be attributed partly to their efficiency to sustain and protect their soft body with an external biomineralized structure, the shell. Current knowledge of the protein set responsible for the formation of the shell microstructural polymorphism and unique properties remains largely patchy. In Pinctada margaritifera and Pinctada maxima, we identified 80 shell matrix proteins, among which 66 are entirely unique. This is the only description of the whole "biomineralization toolkit" of the matrices that, at least in part, is thought to regulate the formation of the prismatic and nacreous shell layers in the pearl oysters. We unambiguously demonstrate that prisms and nacre are assembled from very different protein repertoires....

North-south cross sections of the vertical aerosol distribution over the Atlantic Ocean from multiwavelength Raman/polarization lidar during Polarstern cruises ArchiMer
Kanitz, T.; Ansmann, A.; Engelmann, R.; Althausen, D..
Shipborne aerosol lidar observations were performed aboard the research vessel Polarstern in 2009 and 2010 during three north-south cruises from about 50 degrees N to 50 degrees S. The aerosol data set provides an excellent opportunity to characterize and contrast the vertical aerosol distribution over the Atlantic Ocean in the polluted northern and relatively clean southern hemisphere. Three case studies, an observed pure Saharan dust plume, a Patagonian dust plume east of South America, and a case of a mixed dust/smoke plume west of Central Africa are exemplarily shown and discussed by means of their optical properties. The meridional transatlantic cruises were used to determine the latitudinal cross section of the aerosol optical thickness (AOT)....

La gestion des bassins conchylicoles ArchiMer
Bailly, Denis.
Developed at the end of the last century, oyster farming and mussel farming are the two main components of shellfish farming in France. Recent advances in hatchery and farming techniques of species such as the clam and scallop open up new growth potential for new farming. This is already the case for the former, because clam farming produced 560 tonnes of clams in 1987. The volume of shellfish production, 170,000 tonnes in 1987, puts France among the foremost producing countries out of a world production of shellfish greater than 1.5 million tonnes. In value, this production represents, depending on the year, 15 to 20 percent of the total production of the French marine fishing and farming sector. This is therefore an...

Assessing the internal consistency of the CARINA data base in the Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean ArchiMer
Sabine, C. L.; Hoppema, M.; Key, R. M.; Tilbrook, B.; Van Heuven, S.; Lo Monaco, C.; Metzl, N.; Ishii, M.; Murata, A.; Musielewicz, S..
The CARINA project is aimed at gathering and providing secondary quality control checks on carbon and carbon-relevant hydrographic and geochemical data from cruises all across the Atlantic, Arctic and Southern Ocean. In total the project gathered 188 cruises that were not previously available to the public. Of these 188 cruises, 37 are part of the Southern Ocean. Parameters from the Southern Ocean cruises, including total carbon dioxide (TCO2), total alkalinity, oxygen, nitrate, phosphate and silicate, were examined for cruise-to-cruise consistency. pH and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are also part of the data base, but are not discussed here. This paper focuses on the quality control of the Southern Ocean data from the Pacific sector which consisted of 29...

A palynological and palaeoclimatological record from the southern Philippines since the Last Glacial Maximum ArchiMer
Bian, Yeping; Jian, Zhimin; Weng, Chengyu; Kuhnt, Wolfgang; Bolliet, Timothe; Holbourn, Ann.
A palynological analysis of a marine sediment core in the southern Philippines, provides a detailed regional vegetation and climate history for the West Pacific Warm Pool (WPWP) since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Chronology was determined by a detailed oxygen isotope record. A higher representation of pollen from tropical upper montane rainforest during the LGM indicate that this forest type moved down along elevation, probabaly due to the lowered temperature. During the last deglaciation and the early Holocene, mangroves were more expanded and tropical mid and upper montane rainforests were restricted, suggesting a rising sea-level and temperature increase. Herbaceous pollen and pteridophyte spore records indicate a much drier condition during the LGM...

Numerical study of the annual and semi-annual fluctuations in the deep equatorial Atlantic Ocean ArchiMer
Thierry, Virginie; Treguier, Anne-marie; Mercier, Herle.
Using idealized and realistic high-resolution primitive equation models, we explore the annual and semi-annual period fluctuations in the deep equatorial Atlantic Ocean. The deep seasonal variability derives its energy from the equatorial zonal wind stress component and the wind energy reaches the deep layers by means of vertically propagating Kelvin and Rossby waves. The first meridional mode (l = 1) annual Rossby wave reaches the western boundary while the other Rossby waves directly propagate toward the bottom. A deep Kelvin wave is generated by the reflection of the incoming l = 1 annual Rossby wave at the western boundary. Due to the complexity of the surface layers in the non-linear simulations, one cannot separate the waves generated at the...

Potentiel probiotique de levures productrices des polyamines dans le développement du système digestif du bar Dicentrarchus labrax et de la cabrilla arenera Paralabrax maculatofasciatus ArchiMer
Tovar, Dariel.
The interest in probiotics for aquaculture is increasing rapidly. In the present work we evaluated the potential of some yeast to induce the larvae gut maturation in sea bass larvae Dicentrarchus labrax. The production of polyamines putrescine, spermidine and spermine was quantified in ten yeast strains using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Afterwards, fluorescently labelled yeast adhesion to the intestine of sea bass larvae and the spotted sand bass (Paralabrax maculatofasciatus) was evaluated by fluorescent microscopy. Two of them, CBS 8339 strain (Debaryomyces hansenii) and X2180 strain (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) produce the polyamines of our interest. The same strains showed the best adhering capabilities to the sea bass and spotted sand...

Chemical investigation of the South-Pacific marine sponge Suberea clavata led to the isolation of eight new bromotyrosine metabolites named subereins 1–8 (2–9) along with twelve known co-isolated congeners. The detailed configuration determination of the first representative major compound of this family 11-epi-fistularin-3 (11R,17S) (1) is described. Their chemical characterization was achieved by HRMS and integrated 1D and 2D NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) spectroscopic studies and extensive comparison with literature data. For the first time, a complete assignment of the absolute configurations for stereogenic centers C-11/17 of the known members (11R,17S) 11-epi-fistularin-3 (1) and 17-deoxyfistularin-3 (10) was determined by a combination of...

Atlantic meridional overturning circulation and the Southern Hemisphere supergyre ArchiMer
Speich, Sabrina; Blanke, Bruno; Cai, Wenju.
The ocean's role in climate manifests itself through its high heat capacity, its own rich internal dynamics and its ability to transport vast quantities of heat and freshwater. Of particular interest is the global ocean circulation associated with the Atlantic meridional overturning (AMOC). Because observations are sparse, the detailed global structure of the AMOC remains poorly understood, particularly the pathways along which water returns to the Atlantic to compensate the export of North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW). Here we provide the first quantitative 3-dimensional global view of the AMOC using a Lagrangian reconstruction which integrates hundred of thousands water particle trajectories in an ocean model. The resulting pattern elucidates the role of...

Physiology and continuous culture of the hyperthermophilic deep-sea vent archaeon Pyrococcus abyssi ST549 ArchiMer
Godfroy, Anne; Raven, N; Sharp, R.
The deep-sea vent archaeon Pyrococcus abyssi strain ST549 was grown in batch cultures in closed bottles and by continuous culture in a gas-lift bioreactor, both in the presence and in the absence of elemental sulfur. Growth on carbohydrates, proteinaceous substrates and amino acids was investigated. The disaccharides maltose and cellobiose were shown not to be able to enhance growth suggesting that P. abyssi ST549 is unable to use them as carbon sources. By contrast, proteinaceous substrates such as peptone and brain heart infusion were shown to be very good substrates for the growth of P. abyssi ST549 and allowed growth at high steady-state cell densities in continuous culture. Growth on brain heart infusion was shown to require additional nutrients when...

Detection of Bonamia ostreae and B. exitiosa (Haplosporidia) in Ostrea edulis from the Adriatic Sea (Italy) ArchiMer
Nardsi, V.; Arzul, Isabelle; Cargini, D.; Mosca, F.; Calzetta, A.; Traversa, D.; Robert, Maeva; Joly, Jean-pierre; Chollet, Bruno; Renault, Tristan; Tiscar, P. G..
The flat oyster Ostrea edulis L. is widespread along the Italian coasts. In particular, the Manfredonia Gulf (Adriatic Sea) represents an important site where natural beds subsist. Previous monitoring conducted in 1990 by light microscopy and ultrastructural studies revealed the presence of Bonamia-like microcell parasites in some flat oysters: following this observation, a new sampling of O. edulis was carried out at this location in 2007. Of 750 oysters collected, 3 showed the presence of uninucleated microcells (2 to 3 mu m diameter) free or inside the haemocyte cytoplasm by cytology and histopathology. Molecular analysis confirmed that the microcells in 2 oysters were B. exitiosa, whereas in the third oyster the microcells were B. ostreae. Moreover,...

Mobility and fluxes of trace elements and nutrients at the sediment-water interface of a lagoon under contrasting water column oxygenation conditions ArchiMer
Rigaud, Sylvain; Radakovitch, Olivier; Couture, Raoul-marie; Deflandre, Bruno; Cossa, Daniel; Garnier, Cedric; Garnie, Jean-marie.
The early diagenesis of the major carrier phases (Fe and Mn minerals), trace elements (As, Co, Cr, Hg, MeHg, Ni) and nutrients (Sigma NO3, NH4+, Sigma PO4) and their exchange at the sediment water/interface were studied in the Berre Lagoon, a Mediterranean lagoon in France, at one site under two contrasting oxygenation conditions (strictly anoxic and slightly oxic) and at an adjacent site with perennially well-oxygenated water. From the concentration profiles of the primary biogeochemical constituents and trace elements of the pore and bottom waters, as well as the total and reactive particulate phases, it was possible to locate and identify the diagenetic reactions controlling the mobility of trace elements in the sediments and quantify their rates by...
