GESTIÓN AMBIENTAL DE LOS SISTEMAS AGROFORESTALES EN EL VALLE DE PARAÍBA DEL SUR, ESTADO DE SAO PAULO, BRASIL Organic Eprints

Acknowledging the potential role of animal self-medication Organic Eprints
Engel, Cindy Reece.
This report was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference. Much research on animal health and welfare assumes that animals passively endure the pathogens, diet, and environmental conditions that come their way. Natural selection however has honed behavioural strategies for optimising health. Some of these involve the selection of ‘medicines’ to modulate health. Although it is not yet known to what extent domestic species retain the ability to self-medicate, it is vital that researchers acknowledge the potential role such behaviour might play when designing research protocols

How to promote innovation and interdisciplinarity in organic food and farming research evaluation Organic Eprints
Blanc, Julien; Alföldi, Thomas; Bellon, Stéphane; Niggli, Urs.
The development of organic food and farming research calls for system-oriented, innovative, interdisciplinary approaches. The process of evaluating research proposals is a crucial step towards this objective. Based on the EU CORE Organic pilot call for joint transnational research projects, we analysed to what extent the evaluation criteria and procedures implemented address this issue. Feedback on the experience of the target groups involved in this call was gathered and discussed in relation to findings from the literature. Our results show that interdisciplinary and innovative aspects could be better addressed, and evaluation criteria more clearly defined and delimited. This entails reshaping the main criteria and developing more suitable evaluation...

Farm enterprises as self-organizing systems: A new framework for studying farm enterprises? Organic Eprints
Noe, Egon; Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted.
The growing attention to sustainable food production and multifunctional agriculture calls for a general perspective of farming that is able to grasp the social, technical, and economical aspects of a farm and the dynamic relationship between the farm enterprises and the surrounding world. The dominating theories within rural sociology reveal their shortcomings when they are applied to grasp the dynamic entity of a farm enterprise and its co-evolution with the structural surroundings, market, technology, knowledge, policy etc. The claim of this paper is that a new concept of a farm enterprise as a self-organizing social system can serve as a fruitful framework for studying the development of multifunctional agriculture in a changing global society. In...

The Colloquium of Organic Researchers (COR), UK organic 2002 conference Organic Eprints
This Conference, entitled UK Organic Research 2002 - Research in Context was held over a three-day period on 26-28th March 2002. Hosted by Organic Centre Wales, Institute of Rural Studies, University of Wales, Aberystwyth, it was the first Conference organised by the Colloquium of Organic Researchers (COR) in the UK and is intended to be the first in a biennial series organised by COR. The Colloquium was set up in 1999 to advance organic research through a whole-system approach bringing together economists, ecologists, food scientists, physicists, statisticians and others. Information on COR The programme was designed to promote a whole system approach to research in this varied field; develop appropriate methodologies and statistical techniques;...

Biochar as substitute for organic matter in the composition of substrates for seedlings. Organic Eprints
LIMA, Stefany Lorrayny; MARIMON JÚNIOR, Ben Hur; PETTER, Fabiano André; TAMIOZZO, Suelen; BUCK, Guilherme Bossi; MARIMON, Beatriz Schwantes.
In this study, we tested the hypothesis that pyrogenic carbon (biochar) has properties that enable it to replace fresh organic matter (cattle manure) in seedling substrates. These properties include specific electrophysiological interactions in soil-plant media, stability and longevity. The experiment was conducted in the nursery at the State University of Mato Grosso, located in the municipality of Nova Xavantina, between April and June 2011. The experimental design consisted of randomized blocks with ten treatments and four replicates, including a commercial substrate. Linear regression analysis showed a strong positive relationship between manure treatments and number of leaves, fresh and dry biomass, diameter, height and Dickson Quality Index at 30...
