Genotypic variation of traits related to quality of cassava roots using affinity propagation algorithm Scientia Agricola
Oliveira,Eder Jorge de; Santana,Fernanda Alves; Oliveira,Luciana Alves de; Santos,Vanderlei da Silva.
The conservation, sustainable evaluation and use of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) genetic resources are essential to the development of new commercial varieties. This study aimed to evaluate the quality of cassava roots and to estimate genetic variation and clustering in cassava germplasm using the Affinity Propagation algorithm (AP), which is based on the concept of "message passing" between data points. AP finds "exemplars" of each group and members of the input set representative of clusters. The genotypic data of 474 cassava accessions were evaluated over a period of two years for starch yield (StYi), root dry matter (DMC), amylose content (AML), and the level of cyanogenic compounds (CyC). The AP algorithm enabled the formation of nine diversity...

Herbicide selectivity by differential metabolism: considerations for reducing crop damages Scientia Agricola
Carvalho,Saul Jorge Pinto de; Nicolai,Marcelo; Ferreira,Renato Rodrigues; Figueira,Antonio Vargas de Oliveira; Christoffoleti,Pedro Jacob.
Herbicide selectivity is an agricultural technology largely exploited in chemical strategies of weed control. The joint action of several protection mechanisms avoids phytotoxicity from herbicide treatment, maintaining the level of agronomically accepted damage to a minimum, or even totally avoiding them. The major mechanism of herbicide selectivity derives from the differential metabolism between weed and crop plant species, with weeds presenting a limited ability to perform it under agronomically recommended conditions. In this case, phytotoxicity can be interpreted as an overcoming of the maximum protection capacity offered by the mechanisms of selectivity, or when considering metabolism as the main factor, the overcoming of the inherent plant ability...

Soil compaction and fertilization in soybean productivity Scientia Agricola
Beutler,Amauri Nelson; Centurion,José Frederico.
Soil compaction and fertilization affect soybean development. This study evaluated the effects of soil compaction and fertilization on soybean (Glycine max cv. Embrapa 48) productivity in a Typic Haplustox under field conditions in Jaboticabal, SP, Brazil. A completely randomized design with a 5 x 2 factorial layout (compaction vs. fertilization), with four replications in each treatment, was employed. Each experimental unit (replicate) consisted of a 3.6 m² useful area. After the soil was prepared by cultivation, an 11 Mg tractor passed over it a variable number of times to create five levels of compaction. Treatments were: T0= no compaction, T1= one tractor pass, T2= two, T4= four, and T6= six passes, and no fertilizer and fertilizer to give soybean...

Oxisol subsurface chemical attributes related to sugarcane productivity Scientia Agricola
Landell,Marcos Guimarães de Andrade; Prado,Hélio do; Vasconcelos,Antônio Carlos Machado de; Perecin,Dilermando; Rossetto,Raffaella; Bidoia,Márcio Aurélio Pitta; Silva,Marcelo de Almeida; Xavier,Mauro Alexandre.
In spite of the great homogeneity found in the morphological characteristics of Oxisols, there is great chemical diversity in subsurface layers of these soils. Studies indicate that crop yield presents significant correlation with the chemical attributes of the subsurface, which, are more stable than attributes found in the plough layer, subject to greater alterations as a consequence of agricultural exploration. This work evaluated the effects of subsurface chemical attributes of Oxisols of the South Central region of Brazil, on the yield of sugarcane clones and of variety RB72454, during the first, second and third cropping cycles. Productivity data were obtained between 1993 and 1998. Soils were characterized in terms of their mechanical analysis and...

Growth analysis of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) Scientia Agricola
Nogueira,S.S.S.; Nagai,V.; Braga,N.R.; Novo,M. Do C.S.S.; Camargo,M.B.P..
An experiment to study the growing pattern of a chickpea variety, IAC-Marrocos, was carried out at the Monte Alegre Experimental Station, SP, during 1987 and 1988. The dry matter production of all parts of the plant, as well the leaf area index, were weekly evaluated. Exponential quadratic models of regression were adjusted to total dry matter, leaf dry matter and leaf area index, and a linear model to dry matter of grain. Based on the growth analysis it was concluded that the chickpea is a rustic eatable plant that can be recommended as an alternative winter crop for similar climatic conditions as those of the experiment.

Manganese and zinc leaf application on common bean grown on a "Cerrado" soil Scientia Agricola
Teixeira,Itamar Rosa; Borém,Aluízio; Araújo,Geraldo Antônio de Andrade; Fontes,Renildes Lúcio Ferreira.
The occurrence of micronutrient deficiencies, mainly of manganese (Mn) and zinc (Zn) in "cerrado" soils, has been increasing in several crops, including bean. Such a problem is caused by high rates of liming material applied entirely on the soil surface. In this study, the effects of the leaf application of Mn and Zn rates were evaluated. Three experiments were carried out: two in greenhouse and one under field conditions. The greenhouse experiments were set up using a randomized block design and a 5 x 5 factorial, with three replicates, consisting of five rates of Mn (0, 75, 150, 300, and 600 g ha-1) and five rates of Zn (0, 50, 100, 200, and 400 g ha-1) applied via leaves at the 25th day, or both alternatively parceled at 25 and 35 days after emergency...

Environmental group identification for upland rice production in central Brazil Scientia Agricola
Heinemann,Alexandre Bryan; Sentelhas,Paulo Cesar.
Upland rice (Oryza sativa L.) production is basically concentrated in four central Brazilian States, Mato Grosso, Goiás, Rondônia and Tocantins. To reduce the genotype and environment (G × E) interactions, the classification of environment groups was proposed. The goal of this study explores possibilities to adjust the upland rice regional breeding systems to optimally fit to the range of environments they are targeting, based on a historical yield data set of the Brazilian Geographic and Statistics Institute (IBGE, www.ibge.gov.br/home/) from 54 microregions. The specific objectives of this study were: (i) to identify and classify environmental groups in the Brazilian upland rice production area; (ii) to validate these environmental groups using yield...

Soil respiration in cucumber field under crop rotation in solar greenhouse Scientia Agricola
Liang,Yinli; Bai,Caihong; Mu,Lan; Zhou,Maojuan.
Crop residues are the primary source of carbon input in the soil carbon pool. Crop rotation can impact the plant biomass returned to the soil, and influence soil respiration. To study the effect of previous crops on soil respiration in cucumber (Cucumis statirus L.) fields in solar greenhouses, soil respiration, plant height, leaf area and yield were measured during the growing season (from the end of Sept to the beginning of Jun the following year) from 2007 to 2010. The cucumber was grown following fallow (CK), kidney bean (KB), cowpea (CP), maize for green manure (MGM), black bean for green manure (BGM), tomato (TM), bok choy (BC). As compared with CK, KB, CP, MGM and BGM may increase soil respiration, while TM and BC may decrease soil respiration at...

Honey bee visitation to sunflower: effects on pollination and plant genotype Scientia Agricola
Chambó,Emerson Dechechi; Garcia,Regina Conceição; Oliveira,Newton Tavares Escocard de; Duarte-Júnior,José Barbosa.
Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is an allogamic plant, which needs insects on flowering, especially the honeybees for seed production. Collecting nectar and pollen by honeybees in agricultural crops is essential to apiculture, as well as a better understanding of plant biology. The foraging behavior of Africanized Apis mellifera L. (Hymenoptera, Apidae) and its efficiency of pollination on seed yield of sunflower genotypes (open pollination and restricted pollination) were evaluated. There were peaks of visits by A. mellifera for nectar collection on the 2nd and 3rd flowering days between 7h00 and 8h30. The average density of A. mellifera during increased visitation ranged from 2.27 to 2.94 bees per capitulum. Nectar collecting bees were more frequent...

Production and vegetative growth of coffee trees under fertilization and shade levels Scientia Agricola
Jaramillo-Botero,Catalina; Santos,Ricardo Henrique Silva; Martinez,Herminia Emilia Prieto; Cecon,Paulo Roberto; Fardin,Merci Pereira.
It is difficult to separate the effects of light reduction versus nutrient and water competition in agroforestry systems. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effect of shading and fertilizer supply on the vegetative development and yield of Coffea arabica over six years. The coffee trees were covered with shade screens (photosynthetically active radiation reduction up to 48%) and fertilized from 100 to 40% of the recommended amount from 2001 on. Leaf area, number of leaves, number of nodes, leaf area per branch and, yield were determined. Although no effect of fertilization was found, shading influenced the number of nodes, leaf area and production from the third year on. The number of nodes and yield decreased as shading increased. The...

Rootstock on vine performance and wine quality of ‘Syrah’ under double pruning management Scientia Agricola
Dias,Frederico Alcântara Novelli; Mota,Renata Vieira da; Souza,Claudia Rita de; Pimentel,Rodrigo Meirelles de Azevedo; Souza,Laís Cristina de; Souza,André Luiz de; Regina,Murillo de Albuquerque.
ABSTRACT In the Brazilian Southeast, the production of high quality wines is attained by a new management approach called double pruning. This management changes the harvesting of wine grape (Vitis vinifera L.) from wet summer to dry winter through a two pruning procedures carried out during the year. The first pruning is done during the winter to induce a vegetative cycle (all clusters are removed) and a second pruning is done during the summer to induce the reproductive cycle. In this study, ten different rootstocks were compared in order to optimize yield and wine quality of Syrah vines conducted under autumn-winter season by double pruning approach. Syrah grapevines grafted onto ‘Rupestris du Lot’ and ‘IAC 766’ showed the highest pruning weight, while...

Recurrent selection in inbred popcorn families Scientia Agricola
Daros,Máskio; Amaral Jr.,Antônio Teixeira do; Pereira,Messias Gonzaga; Santos,Fabrício Santana; Gabriel,Ana Paula Cândido; Scapim,Carlos Alberto; Freitas Jr.,Silvério de Paiva; Silvério,Lucas.
Although much appreciated in Brazil, commercial popcorn is currently cropped on a fairly small scale. A number of problems need to be solved to increase production, notably the obtaintion of seeds with good agronomic traits and good culinary characteristics. With the objective of developing superior genotypes in popcorn, a second cycle of intrapopulation recurrent selection based on inbred S1 families was carried out. From the first cycle of selection over the UNB-2U population, 222 S1 families were obtained, which were then divided into six sets and evaluated in a randomized complete block design with two replications within the sets. Experiments were carried out in two Brazilian localities. The analysis of variance revealed environmental effects for all...

Remediation of salt-affected soil by the addition of organic matter: an investigation into improving glutinous rice productivity Scientia Agricola
Cha-um,Suriyan; Kirdmanee,Chalermpol.
Soil salinity may limit plant growth and development, and cause yield loss in crop species. This study aimed at remediating saline soil using organic matter (OM) treatment, before the cultivation of RD6 rice (Oryza sativa L. spp. indica). Physiological and morphological characters of rice plants, as well as crop yield, were evaluated from salt-affected soil with varying levels of salinity. The chlorophyll a and total chlorophyll pigments of rice plants grown in salt-affected soil (2% salt level) with the application of OM were maintained better than in plants grown without OM treatment. The degree of reduced photosynthetic pigments in rice plants was dependent on the level of salt contamination. Pigment content was positively related to maximum quantum...
