In the humid tropic, chemical and physical soil properties that decrease soil's nutrient availability and increase oxygen deficiency are important as restrictions to crop growth. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relations between plant growth and chemical and physical fertility indicators of an Ultisol developed from sediments of the Itapecuru Formation in Central-Northern state of Maranhão, Brazil. An experiment was established with randomized block design, four replicates, and six treatments: 6.0 Mg ha-1 mulch with or without liming; 3.0 Mg ha-1 mulch with or without liming; bare soil with or without liming. Determinations in the plants included leaf area index, net assimilation rate, and the yield parameters: mean number and weight of... |

The development of models that allow forecasting yield tendencies is important to all sectors of the citrus industry. This work evaluated the influence of meteorological variables in different phases of the crop cycle in order to propose empirical models to estimate the number of fruits per plant (NFP) of 'Valencia' and 'Hamlin' sweet oranges. NFP sampling data from the citrus juice industry of the State of São Paulo, on the total of 15 harvests (1990/91 to 2004/05), classified into three age classes, and meteorological data of maximum and minimum air temperature and rainfall of Limeira, SP, Brazil, were utilized. Correlation coefficients were initially computed between the number of fruits per plant and each meteorological variable used for water balance... |

ABSTRACT To increase rice yield potential, field experiments were conducted in farmers’ paddies in 2011 and 2012 to evaluate the effects of different nitrogen applications on the yield and panicle components of three typical indica hybrid rice varieties in Sichuan Province. The number of grains per panicle resulting from late nitrogen application (LA) was 12 % greater than that obtained from traditional nitrogen application (TA); this increase was the main source of improvements in yield. The number of surviving and differentiated spikelets (NSS and NDiS) resulting from LA was significantly higher than that measured under TA, especially for the Fyou498 cultivar, where the NSS and NDiS increased by 15 % and 14 %, respectively. Compared with TA, the number... |

Filter cake is by - product of cane sugar manufacture. It consists of plant nutrient which is useful for soil fertility improvement. According to low fertility of most paddy soils, an experiment had been conducted with combination of chemical fertilizer application and filter cake incorporation for soil fertility and yield improvement in two different soil types in wet season during 1992-2002. This experiment was 4x3 factorial in randomized complete block design, 3 replications, 2 factors with 4 filter cake rates at 0, 500, 1,000 and 1,500 kg/rai and 3 nitrogen rates at 0, 3 and 6 kg N/rai for photo sensitive rice cultivar (Khao Dawk Mali 105) planted in Koksamrong Soil Series (sandy loam, mixed isohyperthermic, typic tropaqualfs) at Lop Buri Rice Research... |

Objective of the present study was to investigate influence of transplanting methods, namely, parachute” and wet seeded culture, on growth, i.e., height and tiller number/bunch, incidence of disease outbreak, soil quality and yield of “Hommali 105” rice cultivated organically. Results showed that the transplanting methods played insignificant role on growth as well as the incidence of disease outbreak (p0.05). However, the “parachute” transplanting method led to higher tiller numbers/bunch and rice yield than that obtained with the wet seeded method, 27 against 5 tillers/bunch (p<0.05) and 1.7 folds, respectively. Further, during cultivation, soil qualities in terms of pH and content of organic matter, nitrogen and potassium appeared to be comparable... |
