Production and Consumption of Foodgrains in India: Implications of Accelerated Economic Growth and Poverty Alleviation AgEcon
Sarma, J.S.; Gandhi, Vasant P..
The role of agriculture in India’s economic development continues to be of great importance, as a producer of food, as an employer of about two-thirds of the labor force, and as a source of purchasing power for much of the nonagricultural consumer goods and services in the economy. Thus, rapid growth in agricultural is essential for sustainable growth and development of the economy. Within agriculture, foodgrain production is by far the major activity, covering about 80 percent of the cropped area in India and providing the main staple source of food. Foodgrains provide almost all the calories and proteins consumed by the poor and provide the rural poor with the bulk of their employment and income. Further, with a population of some 800 million people,...

Consumer willingness to pay for poultry products from biosecure farms in Bali AgEcon
Yusuf, R.P..
This study explores consumer perceptions and willingness to pay for clean and safe poultry products, particularly chicken meat and eggs, in Bali. The study also analyses the correlation between factors associated with the consumer’s purchase decision. Four high-end markets in Denpasar were chosen and 80 respondents were randomly selected in order to explore these issues. Nine attributes were used to define clean and safe poultry products, while five variables were used to explore the correlation between consumer characteristics and their purchase decision. The results show that consumers have a good understanding of clean and safe poultry products. They are aware how the product should appear physically, and they are willing to spend up to an extra...

Contributing to the Analysis of the Sustainability Management in the Organization of the Green Procurement: Theoretical Elements and Empirical Evidence from a Case Study AgEcon
Pampanini, Rossella; Martino, Gaetano.
The introduction of the environmental dimensions within the Public Administration procurements and contracts is increasingly held as contribution to the sustainability of the chains governance. The so called Green Procurement (COM (2001) 274, l.n.488/1999) thus represents an important institutional innovation in Agri-Food Chains and it may potentially act as driver of changing toward a better rooted managerial approach to sustainability.

Was It Something I Ate? Implementation of the FDA Seafood HACCP Program AgEcon
Alberini, Anna; Lichtenberg, Erik; Mancini, Dominic; Galinato, Gregmar I..
We use FDA’s seafood inspection records to examine: (i) how FDA has targeted its inspections under HACCP regulation; (ii) the effects of FDA inspections on compliance with both HACCP and plant sanitation standards; and (iii) the relationship between HACCP regulations and pre-existing sanitation standards. We use a theoretical model of enforcement to derive hypotheses about FDA’s targeting of inspections and firms’ patterns of compliance. We test those hypotheses using econometric models of inspection and compliance. Contrary to the predictions of the theoretical model and to FDA’s own stated policies, FDA does not seem to have targeted inspections based on product risk or past compliance performance. Firms’ compliance strategies seemed to be broadly in...

Food security based on the spatial temporal feature of grain production AgEcon
He, Yan-fen; Ma, Chao-qun; Yang, Hai-juan.
We use the mean value and variation coefficient model to analyze the spatial-temporal feature of grain production in 31 provinces from the year 1980 to 2006. Time series of grain production is divided into 3 stages according to the average yield and the variation coefficient of grain production in provincial level, which are the lower yield and higher variation stage, the higher yield and lower variation stage and the higher yield and higher variation stage. We classify the grain production of each province into four types according to the grain production level and the annual variation characteristics: the lower yield and higher variation type, the lower yield and lower variation type, the higher yield and lower variation type and the higher yield and...

Economic Evidence of Willingness to Pay for the National Animal Identification System in the US AgEcon
Resende Filho, Moises de Andrade; Buhr, Brian L..
This article investigates the willingness to pay for the National Animal Identification System (NAIS) in the US. It is assumed that with the NAIS in place, consumers' risk perception about zoonosis, BSE or mad cow and residues in meat may be mitigated. Therefore, food safety indices for beef, pork and poultry summing the number of references to meat safety found in the top fifty English language news articles in circulation in the US have been constructed. These indices were incorporated in generalized almost ideal demand systems to estimate the effect of those food safety scares on the demand for meat in the US. It has been found that food safety impacts upon the final demand for meat in the US are small and do not show lagged effects. Using the preferred...

DO HEALTHY SCHOOL MEALS COST MORE? FOOD ASSISTANCE RESEARCH BRIEF AgEcon
Guthrie, Joanne F..
USDA school meal programs represent a significant Federal investment, at a cost of almost $8 billion in 2001. More than 27 million children are served school meals annually, making USDA school meals programs a logical place to look for action to improve children's diets. It has been argued that improving the nutritional quality of school meals will raise costs, and therefore increasing USDA school meal reimbursement levels is necessary for that improvement to occur. However, the relationship of school meal costs to success in achieving program outcomes-that is, serving healthful appealing meals that are well-consumed by children-has never been thoroughly investigated. Previous USDA studies of the school meal programs such as the National Evaluation of...

Interprofession and typical products: the case of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese AgEcon
Giacomini, Corrado; Arfini, Filippo; de Roest, Kees.
In the modern agri-food sector the need of manage quality and to improve market efficiency has generated new form of governance along the food chain. Even for typical products inter-profession organization is considered one of the most interesting institutions able to link the production phase to the commercialization phase, according to the more general objective to generate a more efficient contract-based relationship between the companies operating in the various phases of the same supply chain. In this framework, this work would like to analyse the specific case of the Parmigiano Reggiano cheese supply chain in relation to the role that an interprofessional body could play and the possibility that it could be established in order to support and...

A Descriptive Analysis of Recent Trends in the International Market for Dry Milk Products AgEcon
Gould, Brian W.; Villarreal, Hector J..
This Discussion Paper provides a comprehensive description of longer-term trends for exports and world prices of dry milk products. The importance of U.S. exports of dry milk products is suggested by figures in the paper showing that in 2000, 17% of U.S. nonfat dry milk, 35% of dry whey, 47% of lactose, and 11% of whey protein concentrates were exported. The Gould-Villarreal study documents the decline in world trade in nonfat dry milk and expansion of world trade in whole milk powder. The paper suggests that collective product mix decisions of the U.S. dairy industry are partially out-of-sync with world demand. Other implications for U.S. dairy exporters of changes in world demand for dry milk products are discussed.

AN ANALYSIS OF THE USE OF GRADES AND HOUSEBRAND LABELS IN THE RETAIL BEEF MARKET AgEcon
Cox, Linda J.; McMullen, B. Starr; Garrod, Peter V..
The congruence of beef consumers’ purchases with their stated preferences regarding internal fat content are examined. The role of U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) grades and housebrand labeling of beef in providing information to consumers is studied in the theoretical framework of search theory. The empirical results indicate that the current system of USDA grades and housebrand labels is not disseminating information regarding internal fat content effectively to consumers. Suggestions are made for providing consumers with better information and education necessary to increase congruence of expressed preferences regarding internal fat content and actual beef purchases.

Offsetting Behavior and the Benefits of Food Safety Policies AgEcon
Nganje, William E.; Miljkovic, Dragan; Voica, Daniel; Onyango, Benjamin M..
The net effect of food policies, viewed in terms of reduction of foodborne illness, death and food related diseases from obesity, may sometimes be much smaller than the predicted effect because of failure to account for offsetting behavior (OB). Theoretical and empirical models are developed and tested to determine the presence of dominant or partial OB in food safety policies. Results reveal that information that affects outrage and other determinants of risk perception will cause consumers to relax their vigilance in response to the food safety policy. This behavioral anomaly indicates a serious deviation from rational choice and may help explain the growing gap between the decrease in pathogen levels recorded after hazard analysis of critical control...

Food Safety Risk Perceptions as a Tool for Market Segmentation: The U.S. Poultry Meat Market AgEcon
Onyango, Benjamin M.; Rimal, Arbindra; Miljkovic, Dragan; Hallman, William K..
This study explores the application of risk perceptions as a segmentation tool in the poultry meat market. Principal component analysis is used to examine data from a 2006 survey on a potential avian influenza outbreak in the U.S. The results suggest that the perceived level of safety of poultry meat will drive consumption choices in the case of an avian influenza outbreak. Based on the perceived safety level, the poultry meat product market was categorized into those that are home cooked and from familiar brands, the technological/novel, and organic/fast food poultry products, with the first category being perceived as the safest and the third as the least safe. The results also show significant differences in public trust in the avian influenza...

The Distributional Effects of Horticultural Export Value Chains among Smallholders In Southern Ghana AgEcon
Afari-Sefa, Victor.
Increasing foreign exchange problems and deteriorating prices of traditional export commodities have led policy makers and donor agencies to seek diversification in export crop production. In Ghana, crops such as pineapples and mangoes appear promising because of their high labour intensity and the expanding demand for fruits in Europe. Notwithstanding, there is a possible trade-off between export and food crop production because of the possibility of resource re-allocation. So far the major concern of government has been the macro-economic growth in terms export earnings while the distributional effects and impacts on household food security remain under-investigated. The study focused on a household survey undertaken in the forest and coastal-savannah...
