Competencies of Reconfiguration in Product Development – The Case of Convenience Food AgEcon
Voigt, Tim; Kuhl, Rainer.
Convenience food is characterized by a value added to the product core that corresponds to fast changing consumer needs. Thus, convenience food can be considered as an example of one of the most innovative product categories in the domain of the food industry. Concerning innovative activities the prevailing perception of convenience food is that all decisive impulses are coming from the market e.g. are driven by the power of demand. If so, than food producers have the chance to react on these impulses when developing novel convenience food solutions timely and close to the market development intent meeting the requirements of the consumers. In this paper we are going to propose a different viewpoint: firms who are developing, producing and selling...

An Update on the Consequences of EU Sugar Reform AgEcon
Moyo, Sibusiso; Spreen, Thomas H..
Since its formation the European Union (EU) has employed a rather complicated policy to ensure high prices to domestic sugar growers and trade preferences to certain sugar exporting countries, e.g. the African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) group. One result of this policy is that the EU has been both the second largest importer and second largest exporter in the world market. Under pressure from the World Trade Organization (WTO), the EU agreed to reform its policies toward sugar in 2001, with the full effect of the reforms being fully implemented in 2006. In this paper, the impact of the sugar reform on EU production, consumption, imports, and exports is examined especially with regard to how it all affects the ACP countries who receive preferential...

Science in Agricultural Relief and Development Programs: The Case of Conservation Farming In Zimbabwe AgEcon
Mazvimavi, Kizito; Twomlow, Steve; Murendo, Conrad; Musitini, Tawedzegwa.
Drought is endemic to southern Africa. In Zimbabwe farmers have been experiencing drought once every two to three years. Relief agencies have traditionally responded to drought by providing farmers with enough seed and fertilizer to enable them to re-establish their cropping enterprises. But, in the absence of these interventions there are limited sustainable options for farmers to maintain higher productivity levels. ICRISAT has been working with government, NGOs and the donor community to test more sustainable farming strategies that will increase food production levels even under drought conditions. For years, ICRISAT sought to develop more drought-tolerant varieties of sorghum, pearl millet and groundnut. But these offered only limited gains in...

IMPACT OF FOOD CONTAMINATION ON BRANDS: A DEMAND SYSTEMS ESTIMATION OF PEANUT BUTTER AgEcon
Bakhtavoryan, Rafael; Capps, Oral, Jr.; Salin, Victoria.
A 2007 foodborne illness incident involving peanut butter is linked with structural change in consumer demand. Compensated and uncompensated own- and cross-price elasticities and expenditure elasticities were calculated for leading brands before and after the product recall using the Barten synthetic model and weekly time-series data from 2006 through 2008. Statistically significant differences in price elasticities for the affected brand, Peter Pan, were absent. After a period of 27 weeks, this brand essentially recovered from the food safety crisis. Significant differences in price elasticities were evident among non-affected brands. Hence, spillover effects and heightened competition are associated with the recall.

CONSUMER WILLINGNESS TO PAY FOR MULTIPLE ATTRIBUTES OF ORGANIC RICE: A CASE STUDY IN THE PHILIPPINES AgEcon
Ara, Shihomi.
Organic rice production in the Philippines has been growing rapidly since 1986. We conducted a conjoint analysis to determine consumers' preferences of multiple attributes of organic rice in Manila and Naga city. Attributes included were price, reduced health risk level, environmental quality, eating quality, type of organic certification and a fair trade factor. In both cities, health risk was the primary concern. Consumers in Manila revealed organic certification to be the second most important factor while improvement of the farm environment was the second highest factor in Naga city. We found that consumers who live further from the production site have a higher demand for certification. On the other hand, consumers who live close to farms care more...

Ethische Werte aus der Sicht der Verbraucher - Das Beispiel von Lebensmitteln aus ökologischer Produktion AgEcon
Zander, Katrin; Hamm, Ulrich.

Traceability perception of beef: a comparison between Spanish and Italian consumers AgEcon
Mora, Cristina; Menozzi, Davide; Faioli, Giusi; de Carlos, Pilar; Briz, Julian; de Felipe, Isabel.
Nowadays, the increasing demand by customers and consumers for information on food quality and safety determines, to a certain degree, the structure of the food chain. Traceability is considered as a tool to reach and keep consumers' confidence, which became a central issue to restore consumers' confidence in beef safety after the BSE crisis that strongly affected the EU market. Numerous researches have been carried out to determine consumers' preferences related to quality and food safety. However, the consumer perception of beef traceability has not yet been studied enough. In this paper we want to investigate the perception of Italian and Spanish consumers on this issue by analysing the results of six focus groups carried out in both countries, in the...

ASSESSING THE COMPETITIVENESS OF JAMAICAN ACKEE IN LIGHT OF THE CHALLENGES FACED BY SUGAR AND BANANAS AgEcon
Hyatt, Karl.
Economic theory posits that the removal of impediments to trade should redound to improvement in the overall well-being of all nations. Unfortunately, for many developing countries, this has not been the case; upon significantly reducing their tariffs, they are yet to see any tangible benefits. On the contrary, they have experienced a decline in market share and in some instances significant erosion of trade preferences that they had previously enjoyed with their trading partners. The preferential market access, from which Jamaica and other ACP (African Caribbean and Pacific) states benefit, through exports of sugar and bananas to the EU (European Union), has been eroded as a result of recent rulings by the WTO. These rulings have already affected the...

THE CHOICE BETWEEN CONVENTIONAL AND ORGANIC FARMING. A HUNGARIAN EXAMPLE AgEcon
Ferto, Imre; Forgacs, Csaba.
The paper deals with organic produce in one of the largest and, concerning organic production one of the most diffused counties in Hungary, Pest County located in the north-central part of the country. Factors influencing farmers’ decision on adopting or not e.g. farm size, farm type, location, structure, market for organic products, existence of organic AEM were analysed. Hypotheses based on previous empirical literature were tested by a model explicitly accounting for the effects of farm-specific variables like age, education, size of farms and share of rented land. Logit model was estimated on a cross-section data set of Hungarian farmers for the period 2007. It appears that education has a positive impact on the choice between conventional and organic...

Economic Assessment of Food Safety Regulations: The New Approach to Meat and Poultry Inspection AgEcon
Crutchfield, Stephen R.; Buzby, Jean C.; Roberts, Tanya; Ollinger, Michael; Lin, Chung-Tung Jordan.
USDA is now requiring all Federally inspected meat and poultry processing and slaughter plants to implement a new system called Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) to reduce potentially harmful microbial pathogens in the food supply. This report finds that the benefits of the new regulations, which are the medical costs and productivity losses that are prevented when foodborne illnesses are averted, will likely exceed the costs, which include spending by firms on sanitation, temperature control, planning and training, and testing. Other, nonregulatory approaches can also improve food safety, such as providing market incentives for pathogen reduction, irradiation, and education and labeling to promote safe food handling and thorough cooking.

Empirically Evaluating Consumer Characteristics and Satisfaction with Organic Products AgEcon
Govindasamy, Ramu; DeCongelio, Marc; Italia, John; Barbour, Bruce; Anderson, Karen.
Organic production has been practiced in the U.S. since the late 1940s. The distinction between organic and conventional produce is that organic produce is grown with a maximum of five percent synthetic pesticide residues and no prohibited USDA substance can be used on the land three years prior to producing organic produce. No genetic engineering is to be used on the crops, and no antibiotics are to be used on the livestock (USDA, 2001). Organic produce is sold at a premium above the price for conventional produce due to the increased production costs associated with following these rules. Price premiums vary greatly among different organic products and retail facilities. Consumers of these comparatively higher priced items traditionally have been the...

CHANGES IN INCOME AND WELFARE DISTRIBUTION IN URBAN CHINA AND IMPLICATIONS FOR FOOD CONSUMPTION AND TRADE AgEcon
Wang, Qingbin; Shi, Guanming; Zheng, Yi.
While China’'s economic reform has brought about significant economic growth, there is a considerable debate about the impact of such market-oriented reform on income and welfare distributions. This paper examines the changes in income and welfare distributions in urban China from 1981 to 1998 and discusses implications for China’'s food consumption patterns and trade behavior. While the Lorenz curves estimated using Kakwani’'s interpolation method indicate that the level of income inequality in urban China has increased significantly since 1981, welfare comparisons based on generalized Lorenz curves suggest that the rise in real average income has more than compensated for the increase in inequality and has therefore brought about continuous improvement...
