The effects of rainfall amount and distribution on seed yield and quality in Avena barbata were evaluated in a greenhouse under controlled conditions with simulated rainfall regimes. A randomized complete-block design was used with five replications of one pot each. Seven treatments were established according to rainfall regimes for a real year in the semiarid zone in the Metropolitan Región, Chile: normal rainfall (1982), late rainfall (1987), normal-early rainfall (1962), normal-late rainfall (1989), dry-early rainfall (1981) and dry-late rainfall (1990). One treatment without water stress was left for comparison. One-year-old seeds were planted in pots with disinfected soil. The five most uniform plants in terms of size and health were chosen for the... |

Over the past several decades, technological developments and modernization have grown concomitantly. For example, advances in biotechnology have been used as a tool to increase food production. Specifically, advances in genetic engineering have made possible the manipulation of crops to increase yield, guaranteeing food supplies for the increasing world population. However, transgenic crops have not been well received by all members of society, and there is still uncertainty about their social benefits and the possible implications to human health. Additionally, the benefits of agricultural modernization have favored only developed countries, whereas people living in developing and underdeveloped countries suffer rampant hunger, malnutrition and poverty.... |

A. Bastías, R. Almada, P. Rojas, J.M. Donoso, P. Hinrichsen, and B. Sagredo. 2016. Aging gene pathway of microRNAs 156/157 and 172 is altered in juvenile and adult plants from in vitro propagated Prunus sp. Cien. Inv. Agr. 43(3):429-441. In vitro culture is a very popular technique to mass propagate valuable plant genotypes, including Prunus sp. cultivars. Plants that undergo tissue culture processes often change their morphology and behavior due to the "rejuvenation" caused by the plant growth regulators included in the medium. To evaluate the effects of rejuvenation by tissue culture in Prunus sp., the expression patterns of the aging gene pathway described in plant models, which include the highly conserved microRNA (miRNA or miR) 156/157 and 172... |

Temperature is a major factor that affects metabolic processes in living organisms. Thermal time has been widely used to account for the effects of temperature on crop growth and development. However, the thermal time approach has been criticized because it assumes a linear relationship between the rate of crop growth or development and temperature. The response of the rate of crop growth and development to temperature is nonlinear. The objective of this study was to develop a generalized nonlinear temperature response function for some growth and developmental parameters in kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa (A. Chev.) C. F. Liang & A. R. Ferguson). The nonlinear function has three coefficients (the cardinal temperatures), which were 0ºC, 25ºC, and... |

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to determine the cardinal temperatures for the planting-emergence phase of gladiolus. A controlled environment experiment was performed in a growth chamber in the Universidade Federal do Pampa - Campus Itaqui, using the completely randomized experimental design with 12 temperature treatments (5°C, 7°C, 10°C, 13°C, 16°C, 18°C, 20°C, 22°C, 25°C, 30°C, 33°C, 35°C) and ten replicates. Corms of the cultivar ‘Amsterdam’ were planted at a depth of 10cm in 1.7dm3 pots. Every day the date of emergence of the gladiolus plants was observed. Then for each treatment, the emergence rate was calculated as the inverse of the duration of the budding phase, and estimated data were achieved employing the non-linear model of... |
