Screening of soybean cultivars for chloride tolerance in Argentina JBAG
Lúquez,J.E; Briguglio,M.A; Irigoyen,F; Eyherabide,G.A.
Soybean Glycine max [L. (Merrill)] is the most important crop in Argentina, where soil salinization is increasing. Development of salt tolerant cultivars is an effective approach to expand the crop area and minimize yield loss in saline soils. The aim of this work was to screen commercial soybean cultivars for chloride tolerance in three experiments. In the first experiment 37 cultivars were placed in paper rolls wetted with 50 mM NaCl. Germination speed and hypocotyl and radicle length were registered. Twelve cultivars were chloride tolerant as suggested by their hypocotyl and radicle length. In the second experiment, seven cultivars were grown under greenhouse conditions in containers with sandy soil, nutrients and 50 mM NaCl solution. Leaf scorch (LS)...

An invasive pentatomid pest in Argentina: neotropical brown stink bug, Euschistus heros (F.) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) Neotropical Entomology
Saluso,A; Xavier,L; Silva,FAC; Panizzi,AR.
This is the first record on the invasion of the Neotropical brown stink bug, Euschistus heros (F.) in Paraná County (latitude 31º 51' 9.6" S, longitude 60º 32' 11.2" W), Entre Ríos province, Argentina. Five adults were intercepted in 2009/2010, one in crop residues and four on soybean fields. The expanding range in the distribution of E. heros in the Southern Hemisphere is believed to be due to the increased commercial trade among countries, increase in the area cultivated with soybean, and the adoption of no-tillage cropping systems.

New records of plants fed upon by the uncommon Heteropterans Cyrtocoris egeris Packauskas & Schaefer and C. trigonus (Germar) (Hemiptera: Cyrtocoridae) in South America Neotropical Entomology
Schaefer,Carl W.; Panizzi,Antônio R.; Coscarón,Maria C..
During March 2000, nymphs and adults of the cyrtocorid bugs Cyrtocoris egeris Packauskas & Schaefer and C. trigonus (Germar) were observed on two different plants at two different localities. In Brazil (Londrina, Paraná State) adult C. trigonus were found feeding on stems of the weed plant arrow leaf sida, Sida rhombifolia L. (Malvaceae). Despite egg deposition in the laboratory, nymphs did not develop on this plant. In Argentina (Reconquista, Santa Fé Province), nymphs and adults of C. egeris were observed feeding on immature soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] pods. Under laboratory conditions, nymphs of neither species could be reared beyond the third instar.

Insecticide resistance to endosulfan, monocrotophos and metamidophos in the neotropical brown stink bug, Euschistus heros (F.) Neotropical Entomology
SOSA-GOMEZ,DANIEL R.; CORSO,IVAN C.; MORALES,LAURO.
The Neotropical brown stink bug, Euschistus heros (F.), is usually controlled by organophosphate (OP) and cyclodiene (endosulfan) insecticides. Some unsuccessful control cases lead us to search for resistance to these insecticides in E. heros, the most common stink bug in the soybean growing regions of Paraná State, São Paulo State and Central Region of Brazil. Bioassays were performed with endosulfan, monocrotophos and metamidophos against adults. The most susceptible population was found in Londrina. Populations from Pedrinhas Paulista (SP) showed the highest resistance ratio (RR) to endosulfan (RR= 8.7) and metamidophos (RR=2.7); resistance to monocrotophos was detected on bugs from Centenário do Sul (PR) (RR= 3.1). Stink bugs collected from Toledo...

Duration of feeding and superficial and in-depth damage to soybean seed by selected species of stink bugs (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) Neotropical Entomology
Depieri,RA; Panizzi,AR.
Laboratory studies were conducted to compare duration of feeding and superficial and in-depth damage to soybean (Glycine max) seeds by the Southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula (L.), the Neotropical brown stink bug, Euschistus heros (F.), the red-banded stink bug, Piezodorus guildinii (Westwood), and the green-belly stink bug, Dichelops melacanthus (Dallas). Results indicated that feeding time was significantly longer for N. viridula (≈ 133 min) compared to E. heros and D. melacanthus (≈ 70 min), but not different from P. guildinii (≈ 103 min). There was a positive correlation between feeding time and the resulting damage for E. heros, N. viridula and P. guildinii (R² > 0.80, P < 0.0001), but not for D. melacanthus (R² = 0.1011, P = 0.1493)....

Seed-carrying and feeding behavior of Jadera choprai Göllner-Scheiding (Heteroptera: Rhopalidae) Neotropical Entomology
PANIZZI,ANTÔNIO R.; HIROSE,EDSON.
During February-March 2001, the seed-carrying and feeeding behavior on Cardiospermum halicacabum (L.) (Sapindaceae) by Jadera choprai Göllner-Scheiding was studied. Field observations indicated that the bugs feed on seeds found on the ground. Laboratory studies indicated that J. choprai may carry seeds 200 cm from where they were found. Several individuals were observed feeding on one seed, with the occurrence of cannibalism. Apparently, this is the first record on the association of J. choprai with C. halicacabum, and on seed-carrying by this rhopalid.

The chemical volatiles (Semiochemicals) produced by neotropical stink bugs (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) Neotropical Entomology
Moraes,Maria C.B.; Pareja,Martín; Laumann,Raúl A.; Borges,Miguel.
In recent years the growing concern about environmental changes and how we are using the natural resources have triggered a search for natural products as alternatives to synthetic pesticides. The stink bugs produce a wide variety of chemical compounds (semiochemicals) that show potential to manage these insects. The stink bugs Chinavia impicticornis (Stål), C. ubica (Rolston), Dichelops melacanthus (Dallas), Euschistus heros (F.), Piezodorus guildinii (Westwood), Thyanta perditor (Westwood) and Tibraca limbativentris (Stål) had their blends of defensive compounds evaluated both qualitative and quantitatively. The main compounds identified on the glands of Brazilian stink bugs are: 2-alkenals, mainly the E isomer; saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons; and 4...

Survivorship, larval development and pupal weight of Anticarsia gemmatalis (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) feeding on potential leguminous host plants Neotropical Entomology
Panizzi,Antônio R.; Oliveira,Lenita J.; Silva,Jovenil J..
In Brazil, the velvetbean caterpillar Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner is multivoltine. Several overlapping generations occur with larvae feeding on alternate host plants in areas of warmer temperatures. In this study, the survivorship and development of A. gemmatalis larvae were evaluated on 17 species of cultivated and non-cultivated legumes in laboratory conditions. Larval survivorship on summer legumes varied from 91% on soybean to 5% on showy crotalaria and on velvetbean. On winter legumes, survivorship of A. gemmatalis larvae varied from 90% on white lupin to 25% on common vetch. All larvae fed on yellow lupin died during early development. On non-cultivated summer legumes, 70% of the larvae on Indigofera suffruticosa Millsp., and 55% on I. truxillensis...

The effect of cover crop and crop rotation on soil water storage and on sorghum yield PAB
Azevedo,Demóstenes Marcos Pedrosa de; Landivar,Juan; Vieira,Robson Macedo; Moseley,Daryl.
Crop rotation and cover crop can be important means for enhancing crop yield in rainfed areas such as the lower Coastal Bend Region of Texas, USA. A trial was conducted in 1995 as part of a long-term cropping experiment (7 years) to investigate the effect of oat (Avena sativa L.) cover and rotation on soil water storage and yield of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.). The trial design was a RCB in a split-plot arrangement with four replicates. Rotation sequences were the main plots and oat cover crop the subplots. Cover crop reduced sorghum grain yield. This effect was attributed to a reduced concentration of available soil N and less soil water storage under this treatment. By delaying cover termination, the residue with a high C/N acted as an N sink through...

Effects of high arsenic and fluoride soil concentrations on soybean plants Phyton
Bustingorri,C; Balestrasse,K; Lavado,RS.
Arsenic (As) and Fluoride (F) are present in many soils, affecting crops and posing risks in the food chain. We performed pot experiments on spiked soils enriched in these elements either individually or simultaneously, over a wide range of concentrations. Soybean biomass production, grain yield, As and F accumulation and distribution within the plant, and the antioxidant response to these stresses were analyzed. Arsenic was more toxic than F. At As levels >35 mg/kg and F levels >375 mg/kg, yield loss reached 60% and 30%, respectively. At the highest dose of As plants died within 2 weeks, whereas F showed no lethality. When they were applied simultaneously, detrimental effects were more important. As and F in plants increased in all soybean organs...

W.F.,SANTOS; S.O.,PROCÓPIO; A.G.,SILVA; M.F.,FERNANDES; A.L.L.,BARROSO.
The use of the Roundup Ready(r) technology and the cultivation of a second crop influence the floristic composition of weed communities in Brazilian Central-West region cropping systems. This study has aimed to diagnose the dominant weed species in southwestern Goiás in areas of genetically-modified and conventional soybeans, using phytosociological and floristic surveys. Weed sampling was obtained by collecting all the plants present within a 0.5 m hollow frame, randomly thrown 20 times in each of thirty-five agricultural areas in the 2012/2013 harvest. Field survey was carried out in three periods: before desiccation for soybean sowing, before postemergence herbicide in soybean first application and before postemergence herbicide application in late...

Glyphosate-Resistant Sourgrass Management Programs Associating Mowing and Herbicides Planta Daninha
RAIMONDI,R.T.; CONSTANTIN,J.; MENDES,R.R.; OLIVEIRA JR.,R.S.; RIOS,F.A..
ABSTRACT: Currently, sourgrass is one of the most important weeds in grain production areas in Brazil. The objective of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of associated systems composed by mowing and chemical control against clumped sourgrass. In the first experiment, different mowing heights (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 cm), coupled with complementary applications of glyphosate + clethodim, were evaluated on sourgrass control. The second experiment was composed by programs starting with fallow mowing at different times, 50 (early), 35 (intermediate) and 20 (late) days before soybean sowing. After mowing, treatments were followed by herbicide applications according to the need until soybean harvest. The shorter the mowing height associated with herbicide...
