Quantifying Nitrate Leaching in Irrigated Wheat with Different Nitrogen Fertilization Strategies in an Alfisol Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Claret M,Marcelino; Urrutia P,Roberto; Ortega B,Rodrigo; Best S,Stanley; Valderrama V,Natalia.
Consumption of water contaminated with nitrates is associated with important health effects such as methemoglobinemia and gastric cancer. Intensive agriculture, which uses large quantities of N fertilizer, is the main source of nitrates in water systems. There are several strategies to reduce leaching and increase Nitrogen Use Efficiency (NUE). An experiment was conducted with spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) under sprinkler irrigation (center pivot) to determine if adjusted N applications using precision agriculture tools and plant demand resulted in a lower groundwater nitrate load. Evaluated treatments were: produced fertilization (Pr), precision agriculture (Pa), chlorophyll meter (Sm), and control without N (W/N). The ceramic capsule methodology...

Performance of Late Sown Wheat in Response to Foliar Application of Moringa oleifera Lam. Leaf Extract Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Yasmeen,Azra; Basra,Shahzad Maqsood Ahmed; Ahmad,Rashid; Wahid,Abdul.
A rise in temperature during early spring inducing early maturity is a key yield-reducing factor in late sown wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Moringa oleifera Lam. leaves are rich in zeatin, a cytokinin that plays a role in delaying leaf senescence, in addition to other growth-enhancing compounds such as ascorbates, phenolics, and minerals. The objective of this study was to optimize dose and optimum growth stage for foliar-applied moringa leaf extract (MLE) and its role in delaying leaf senescence in late sown wheat. The wheat crop was shown on 16 December 2008; MLE (diluted 30 times) was applied at different growth stages from tillering to heading and heading alone and distilled water was sprayed as a control. All the MLE treatment results were better than...

Genetic Analysis of Relative Cell Injury Percentage and Some Yield Contributing Traits in Wheat Under Nomral and Heat Stress Conditions Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Farooq,Jehanzeb; Khaliq,Ihsan; Kashif,Muhammad; Ali,Qurban; Mahpara,Shahzadi.
Several wheat genotypes were screened against heat stress. Seven wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars obtained after screening against heat classified as tolerant, moderately tolerant, and susceptible to heat stress, were mated in a complete diallel mating system to study the inheritance pattern of relative cell injury percentage (cell injury %) and some yield contributing parameters under normal and heat stress conditions. Significant genotypic differences were found (P < 0.01) for all the studied traits under both regimes. The scaling test disclosed partial adequacy for traits such as days to heading and days to maturity, but for flag leaf area and relative cell injury %, it showed full sufficiency under both environments. The model for grain yield...

Fusarium crown rot disease: biology, interactions, management and function as a possible sensor of global climate change Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Moya-Elizondo,Ernesto A.
E.A. Moya-Elizondo. 2013. Fusarium crown rot disease: biology, interactions, management and function as a possible sensor of global climate change. Cien. Inv. Agr. 40(2):235-252. Wheat crops are commonly affected by the dryland root rot complex (DLRRC) under dry and semiarid conditions. This complex is associated with seedling blight, and rotting of roots, crowns and stems of wheat plants. Several pathogens are associated with this complex, but Fusarium crown rot disease (FCR) is the most common and is of worldwide importance. Increased drought frequency and changes in rainfall regimes associated with global climate change may increase the prevalence of this complex of diseases, especially of FCR, in wheat crop areas. This review discusses the...

Double purpose wheat: correlation analysis of forage yield components Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Morant,Alicia; Merchán,Héctor; Lutz,Eugenio.
The direct and relative contribution of characters associated with forage production were evaluated in a comparative assay of wheat cultivars to contribute to an ideotype defnition when selecting double purpose material for forage and grain production. Simple correlations for all of the possible combinations among the measured variables were calculated. The correlation partition method, known as path coeffcient, was applied to determine the causes of this association and to measure the relative importance of each factor. Forage production during the vegetative period was measured for each variety at the dates in which the apex reached the double ridge state (3 - 4 in the Nerson scale). The double ridge state was considered the deadline of the vegetative...

Abundance and prevalence of Aphidius avenae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Aphidiinae) in Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Peñalver-Cruz,Ainara; Ortiz-Martínez,Sebastián; Villegas,Cinthya; Tomanovic,Zeljko; Zepeda-Paulo,Francisca; Zikic,Vladimir; Lavandero,Blas.
Abstract During the samplings described here, Aphidius avenae (=picipes) (Haliday, 1834) was collected. This species has been reported in Chile but has never been studied in terms of its relative abundance and prevalence in central and southern Chile by using classical or molecular methods. The composition of the parasitoid assemblages on several cereal aphid hosts was examined for three seasons in agricultural landscapes. In this note, we describe the prevalence of this parasitoid species in cereal aphids and other aphid hosts and discuss the abundance of this parasitoid compared to other aphid parasitoids and the probable origins of this important aphid parasitoid species in Chile. The results indicate that A. avenae has a low prevalence compared to...

Market integration for Chilean wheat prices using Vector Error Correction Models (VECM), a cointegration analysis: análisis de cointegración Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Valdes,Rodrigo; von Cramon-Taubadel,Stephan; Díaz,José.
Historically Chile has been a wheat net importer country. This situation, added to the small size of its economy, causes that the domestic price of this cereal is highly influenced by import prices of substitute wheat. This research analyzed the integration level of the Chilean wheat market with respect to the USA and Argentinean markets using a vector error correction model (VECM), the impact of the band prices (D-BAND) and the change of the band mechanism introduced in 2004 (D-MECH) by the inclusion of two binary variables in the VECM. The results showed strong market integration among Argentina, Chile and USA, with USA leading the market. Additionally, the price of the Chilean wheat was influenced by the USA and Argentina prices. The binary variables,...

Region-level yield and area price elasticities for Chilean wheat incorporating climate variables Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
González,Sergio; Foster,William.
Wheat yields have increased in Chile in the last thirty years due in part to incentives, increased input use and improved varieties. Region-specific price elasticities of perhectare yields and planted hectares are estimated using region-level data for the period 1975-2007. Price-yield and price-hectare elasticities are similar, although slightly lower than those obtained by Morales and Foster (2002) in all regions, ranging between 0.33 and 0.73 for yields and between 0 and 0.43 for hectares. Values of price elasticity for total production range between 0.38 and 1.12. For two of the regions studied, climate variables were available and their inclusion results in a reduction in of the elasticity of total production with respect to price. The results suggest...

Assessing long- and short-term trends in cereal yields: the case of Chile between 1929 and 2009 Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Engler,Alejandra; del Pozo,Alejandro.
Cereal grain yields have increased worldwide during the 20th century as a consequence of plant breeding, improved cultural practices and intensive use of inputs. However, there is evidence that there are differences in yield pattern evolution across countries and cereals. The purpose of this study was to compare trends in the yields of the most commonly produced cereals in Chile, namely wheat, oat, barley, maize and rice, to identify similarities in trends across crops and to estimate long-term growth rates in the yields and their changes over time. Data for wheat, barley, oat, rice and maize yields between 1929 and 2009 were obtained from the Chilean Oficina de Estudios y Políticas Agrarias (ODEPA). A first-order autoregressive (AR1) model with trend was...

Herbicides with natural and synthetic biostimulants in spring wheat Ciência Rural
Matysiak,Kinga; Miziniak,Wojciech; Kaczmarek,Sylwia; Kierzek,Roman.
ABSTRACT: Although the knowledge on agricultural using of biostimulants increases, there is still little information on their interactions with other chemicals i.e. herbicides. The aim of the study was to assess the influence of popular herbicides (MCPA + dicamba, dicamba + triasulfuron, florasulam+2,4-D) used with and without biostimulants based on seaweed extract (Kelpak) and nitrophenols (Asahi) on weed control efficiency, yield and quality of the crop. Field trial was carried out in the years 2014 and 2015 in the Institute of Plant Protection - National Research Institute in Poznan (Poland). The experiment was established on spring wheat cv.‘Torridon’, in 4 replications, using randomized block design. In the experiment two variants of application were...

A new, harmless, high-throughput endosperm-based DNA extraction method for wheat Ciência Rural
Ma,Zhihui; Wang,Yuquan; Wei,Wenhui; Ru,Zhengang.
ABSTRACT: In this study, a non-destructive, high-throughput, endosperm-based DNA extraction method was developed. To verify the non-destructive nature of this method, a germination test was performed on 288 seeds after sampling their endosperm, which gave a seedling emergence rate that was higher (97.6%) than that of the control group (92%). To confirm the feasibility of the new method, DNA was extracted from plants of a BC1F2 population by two different methods, namely, from endosperm using our rapid, high-throughput method (ER-DNA) and from young leaves emerging from the same sampled seed using the CTAB method (LC-DNA). The ER-DNA was undetectable by agarose gel electrophoresis, but was found to be an adequate replacement for LC-DNA for the...

Perceptions of wheat producers towards risk and risk management strategies: A case study from Turkey Ciência Rural
Hayran,Seyit.
ABSTRACT: In this study, risk perception of wheat producers in Turkey was examined based on a case study conducted in Bitlis Province. The data set used in the study was obtained from 157 farmers randomly. Factor analysis was employed to classify risk sources and management strategies, and then multiple regression was used to investigate the relationship between farmers perceptions and some characteristic. Results of this study have shown that economic-based risks were perceived more strongly by farmers. Farmers’ also used more than one risk management strategy to minimize the impact of the risks they face. So, in order to ensure social and economic sustainability and predictability in wheat production and wheat market, the government should be considered...
