Factors Associated with Farm Households’ Movement Into and Out of Poverty in Kenya: The Rising Importance of Livestock. AgEcon
Burke, William J.; Jayne, Thomas S.; Freeman, H. Ade; Kristjanson, Patricia.
This study explores the dynamics of poverty in Kenya. The study specifically examines how initial conditions, household decisions, and other factors that may change over time affect poverty. Dynamic relationships are identified between behavioral variables, exogenous shocks at one point in time, and indicators of household welfare in subsequent years.

CARACTERISTICAS DA INTERNACIONALIZAÇÃO DA AGROINDUSTRIA EXPORTADORA DE FRANGO DE CORTE DE MATO GROSSO DO SUL. AgEcon
Lima, Dario Oliveira; Barczsz, Silvio Silvestre; Oliveira, Leidy Diana Souza De.

Availability of Poultry Litter as an Alternative Energy Feedstock: The Case for Mississippi AgEcon
Whittington, Andrew.
This study will examine the poultry industry in a 9 county area in Mississippi, estimate the availability of poultry litter as a feedstock for the production of energy and ethanol. The study will use a X, Y coordinate model to locate a production facility that minimizes transportation costs.

Carcass Quality Volume and Grid Pricing: An Investigation of Cause and Effect AgEcon
Fausti, Scott W.; Qasmi, Bashir A.; Li, Jing.
The relationship between publically reported weekly grid premiums and discounts for specific carcass characteristics and the percentage of those characteristics reflected in total weekly slaughter volume (i.e., proportional slaughter volume) is investigated. Granger Causality and multi-lag VAR models were used to investigate if grid premiums and discounts were efficiently transmitting market signals to producers with respect to carcass quality attributes. The empirical evidence indicates that there is little evidence to suggest that grid prices are providing efficient price signals to buyers and sellers with respect to market valuation of desirable and undesirable beef carcass characteristics.

ARE LIVESTOCK FUTURES PRICES RATIONAL FORECASTS? AgEcon
Shonkwiler, John Scott.
A measure for evaluating whether live hog and cattle futures prices represent rational forecasts is presented. It is assumed that the mechanisms which generate rational price forecasts possess the same stochastic properties as the cash prices with which they are associated. Using empirical data, tests are constructed which suggest that for contracts more than two months from maturity the rationality hypothesis is generally rejected. These findings are related to other studies of futures performance and the livestock markets.

Is It a Jungle Out There? Meat Packing, Immigrants, and Rural Communities AgEcon
Artz, Georgeanne M.; Jackson, Rebecca; Orazem, Peter F..
The shift of the U.S. meat packing industry from urban to rural areas has generated controversy regarding potential social and economic costs of meat packing plants on their host communities. This study uses media comments to identify the most prominent controversies regarding meat packing, its largely immigrant workforce, and rural communities. We find that the industry has impacted the demographic composition of rural communities and their schools, but find no evidence that the industry increases per capita government expenditures. Our results suggest rural communities trade off the economic benefits of hosting these large employers against the costs of accommodating needs of new residents.

Alternative Model Selection Using Forecast Error Variance Decompositions in Wholesale Chicken Markets AgEcon
McKenzie, Andrew M.; Goodwin, Harold L., Jr.; Carreira, Rita I..
Although Vector Autoregressive models are commonly used to forecast prices, specification of these models remains an issue. Questions that arise include choice of variables and lag length. This article examines the use of Forecast Error Variance Decompositions to guide the econometrician’s model specification. Forecasting performance of Variance Autoregressive models, generated from Forecast Error Variance Decompositions, is analyzed within wholesale chicken markets. Results show that the Forecast Error Variance Decomposition approach has the potential to provide superior model selections to traditional Granger Causality tests.

A NATIONWIDE, STATE-LEVEL, ANALYSIS OF ANIMAL CONFINEMENT POLICY BY SELECTED SPECIES AgEcon
Park, Dooho; Davies, Stephen P.; Seidl, Andrew F..
We have addressed the impact of state environmental regulation on the livestock industry by selected two species. Beef cattle, as a leading livestock of the U.S, has experienced relatively steady structural transformation, on the other hand, hog industry has changed rapidly of its size and the location. The beef industry more or less sticks with traditional factors rather than regulation. On the other hand, the hog industry, which has more chance to adopt the stringency of state regulation during the special movement, is more sensitive by the stringency of regulation, especially in the large operation.

Feasibility of Solar Technology (Photovoltaic) Adoption: A Case Study on Tennessee's Poultry Industry AgEcon
Bazen, Ernest F.; Brown, Matthew.
The advantages and limitations of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems for energy generation are reviewed under various physical efficiency limits, operational design and financial assistance programs. Recent increases in utility and fuel costs in poultry production as well as public awareness of and demand for green power or renewable energy sources has given renewed interest in alternative energy sources. This study seeks to investigate the impact of alternative energy programs, grants and other incentives on the feasibility of solar PV systems in two solar regions within Tennessee's poultry industry. Preliminary results show that incentives must exceed current levels before adoption of solar PV systems would be financially beneficial.

Optimal Antibiotic Usage with Resistance and Endogenous Technological Change AgEcon
Secchi, Silvia; Babcock, Bruce A..
The authors develop an expected utility model with heterogeneous individuals and apply some of the approaches developed in the energy literature to explicitly identify the public nature characteristics of susceptibility in a dynamic setting and to characterize the optimal intertemporal usage problem from a social planner perspective. The authors determine the optimal time path for the depletion of susceptibility to an existing drug and show that use of antibiotics should be rationed across the population and through time. The authors also discuss the impact of endogenous technological change and analyze the dynamics of research activities in backstop technologies both in a certain and in an uncertain world. The authors show that resources invested in...
