Clustering of ingredients with amino acid composition similar to the nutritional requirement of Nile tilapia Scientia Agricola
Bicudo,Álvaro José de Almeida; Pinto,Luis Fernando Batista; Cyrino,José Eurico Possebon.
The search for balanced diets, which may elicit improved growth of fish, requires appropriate selection of available protein sources. This study aims at clustering feedstuffs according to amino acid profile, determining which ones show essential amino acids (EAA) profiles closer to the ideal dietary amino acids requirements of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), and studying the relationship among amino acids feedstuffs groups. Tabled data on EAA more cystine and tyrosine, in relation to lysine contents, of 40 feedstuffs ordinarily used to formulate fish diets were studied. Feedstuffs were grouped according to amino acids profile by cluster analysis of Euclidean distances. The principal components analysis was used to determine the relationship among...

Kavamoto,Emico Tahira; Narahara,Massuka Yamane; Andrade-Talmelli,Elaine Fender de.
This Study Concerns the morphological changes of the testes of "curimbatá", Prochilodus scrofa (Steindachner, 1881) at the beginning of sperm production, before and after the hormonal injections. We examined 25 three year old males that were reared in tanks at the Experimental Fish and Frog Culturing Station of Pindamonhangaba of the Fisheries Institute of São Paulo. The testes were sampled at the start of sperm production, after the first hormone injection (5 IU/g for weight of hCG), and 14 days before and after a second injection. Testicle fragments of these specimens were fixed and embedded in historesin. At the beginning of sperm production, the milky-white gonad showed consistem superficial vascularization, exceeding thick sperm under light pressure....

Nota complementar sobre a composição ictiofaunística da Baía de Guaratuba, Paraná, Brasil Zoologia
Chaves,Paulo T. C.; Vendel,Ana Lúcia.
The utilisation of multiple gears and the surveying of other areas than that of mangrove habitats have increased in 27 the number of fish species known in the Guaratuba Bay, an estuarine ecosystem located in the southern of Brazilian coastal region (25º52'S, 48º39'W). The new occurrence of a typically freshwater species (Pimelodidae) and of several Clupeiformes and Gobiidae species, reveals the importance of the salt marsh and the innermost zones of this Bay to the distribution of certain fish groups.

Liver histopathology of the fish brachydanio rerio hamilton-buchman after acute exposure to sublethal levels of the organophosphate dimethoate 500 Zoologia
Rodrigues,Edson de Lara; Fanta,Edith.
Among the new substances that were synthesised by the chemical industiy during the last decades, with the aim to improve human prosperity, some cause negative effects on non target organisms like fish. Among the pesticides, the organophosphates (OP) are widely used in cattle management, agriculture and aquaculture activities. Brachydanio rerio Hamilton-Buchman, 1822 is used world-wide in fish-tests for the establishment of the lethal levels of pesticides. Nevertheless, these fish show morphological changes in their hepatocytes when exposed experimentally for 24 hours to the sublethal dose of 0.025 µl/l of the OP Dimethoate 500, in acute tests. Right hours after exposure, a high density of cells with cytoplasmic granulation is seen as well as focal...

Enzymatic production of p-nitrophenol in liver of Piaractus mesopotamicus Holmberg, 1887 was consistently assayed at pH 8.5 using 7.5 mM paraoxon as substrate. This pacu liver paraoxonase activity was activated by NaCl. Apparent values of K M were 2.42 x 10-3 M in the presence of 0.5 M NaCl and 8.99 x 10-3 M without NaCl. Apparent maximum velocity values calculated in the absence and presence of 0.5 M NaCl were 1.09 x 10-3 µmoles/min/mg of proteins and 1.29 x 100-3 µmoles/min/mg of proteins, respectively. These Vmax values are fifty-fold the value described for trout (Salmo trutta Linnaeus, 1758) liver paraoxonase. Paraoxonase activity of pacu liver homogenates was recovered as much in cytosolic as in particulate cellular subtractions, but the particulate...

Bastos,Vera Lucia F. Cunha; Rossini,Ana; Alves,Marcelo V; Ceccarelli,Paulo S; de Lima,José A. Ferraz; Bastos,Jayme Cunha.
A paraoxonase activity present in serum of two Brazilian fish species was consistently assayed at pH 8.5 using 7.5 mM paraoxon final concentration. The paraoxonase activity was more activated by 0.5 M NaCl in serum of Piaractus mesopotanricus Holmberg, 1887 (pacu) than in serum of Hypostomus punctatus Valenciennes, 1840 (cascudo). Apparent values of K M were 3.3 x 10-3 M for cascudo and pacu paraoxonase activity in the presence of 0.5 M NaCl. Apparent maximum velocity values calculated in the presence of 0.5 M NaCl were 6.1 and 6.5 nmole/min/mL of serum for cascudo and pacu, respectively. Vmax/K M ratio values of determinations in the presence and absence of 0.5 M NaCl showed that NaCl had a more evident effect on increasing the affinity of serum...

Behaviour and orcadian rhythm of the fish bathygobius soporator Valenciennes (Gobiidae) under the influence of environmental salinity and temperature Zoologia
Fanta,Edith.
The behavioural patterns and their cireadian rhythms may be adaptive to the peculiar environmental conditions of subtropical brackish waters where Ba-thygobius soporator Valenciennes, 1837 live. Adult fish were caught at the southern Brazilian coast from mangrove rivers and rocky shores in a bay, where temperature and water salinity vary during the day and through the year. Observation on the behaviour of the animals was undertaken in salinity 8.5ppt, 17.0ppt, 25.5ppt and 34.0ppt, each one in temperatures of 18ºC and 28ºC. Temperature and salinity affect the frequency and intensity of some of the behavioural events, more than its pattern or rhythm. Swimming is rare, decreasing along the day and with temperature increase, being even lower at low salinity;...

Donatti,Lucélia; Fanta,Edith.
The retina of Metynnis roosevelti Eigenmann, 1915, a very active freshwater fish, was investigated by light and electron microscopy and was found to have a complex neuronal structure that allows rapid responses of visual stimuli. Retina photoreceptors are double cones, single long cones, single short cones and rods. Cone inner segments are arranged as mosaics. The outer nuclear layer contains small nuclei of twin cones, long and wide nuclei of long single cones, spherical large nuclei of short cones, and small dense nuclei of rods. Horizontal, amacrine, bipolar and ganglion neurones are responsible for connections and integration between photoreceptor cells and afferent neurones. The pigmented epithelium comprises a single layer of cylindrical cells each...

A description of mercury in fishes from the Madeira River Basin, Amazon, Brazil Acta Amazonica
Bastos,Wanderley Rodrigues; Rebelo,Mauro de Freitas; Fonseca,Márlon de Freitas; Almeida,Ronaldo de; Malm,Olaf.
Over the last 20 years several projects carried on the Madeira River basin in the Amazon produced a great amount data on total Hg concentration in different fish species. In this paper we discuss temporal trends in Hg contamination and its relation to body weight in some of those fishes, showing that even within similar groups, such as carnivorous and non-migratory fish, the interspecies variability in Hg accumulation is considerable.
