Regrowth and nutrient composition of different plant organs in grass-clover canopies as affected by phosphorus and potassium availability Organic Eprints

Regrowth after cutting and distribution of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) in different plant organs of white clover and perennial ryegrass growing in pure or mixed swards, were investigated under field conditions in a soil with a low-to-moderate availability of P and K. In all treatments, white clover constituted more than 70% of the above-ground biomass in the mixed swards. The petioles were the dominant pool of dry matter throughout regrowth and contained the greatest amounts of N, P and K. Increased supply of P and K increased the growth of ryegrass, but not that of white clover in the mixed swards. The Organofinery: A Green Biorefinery for Animal Feed, Biogas and Fertilizer: An Industrial Scale feasibility Study Organic Eprints

The OrganoFinery project is a concept of a green biorefinery which aims the utilization of red clover to produce organic protein for animal feed, biogas and fertilizer. It is currently being studied in laboratory and pilot scale but information in terms of large scale implementation and viability is still insufficient. A model was created using the software SuperPro Designer in order to design and study in detail the construction and operation of an industrial scale plant based on the mentioned project. To achieve this, theoretical mass balances were calculated using experimental data and, once designed, an economic assessment was performed to analyse the feasibility of the process. Organic grassland: the foundation stone of organic livestock farming Organic Eprints

In organic farming, the components of the whole farm system interact closely and grassland plays the central role in this intricate web, including the arable cropping phase. Grassland is important particularly in relation to nitrogen supply via its influence on N-fixation, soil organic matter, structure and biological activity and it also has a major role to play in restricting the build-up of arable weeds and soil-borne crop diseases in arable rotations. Ruminant livestock share this central role with grassland on most successful organic farms, and the success of the livestock enterprise is intimately tied up with the management and productivity of the grassland.

Symbiotic nitrogen fixation and N-transfer in a grass-white clover mixture Organic Eprints

Symbiotic N2 fixation (SNF) and transfer of fixed N from clover to grass in a grass-white clover mixture was measured during two years using 15N isotope dilution techniques. White clover derived from 87 to 99% of its N from the atmosphere. The total SNF ranged from 150 to 277 kg N ha-1 yr-1, which corresponded to 34-45 mg N fixed per gram of white clover dry weight. The transfer of fixed N from clover to grass corresponded to approximately 10 kg N ha-1 yr-1.

Kurzrasen- und Koppelweide im ostalpinen Berggebiet im Vergleich Organic Eprints

In einem simulierten Weideversuch wurden die Effekte der Kurzrasen- (KR) und Koppelweide (KO) untersucht. Um den Ertrag in der vorliegenden Untersuchung zu messen, wurden Weidekörbe auf einer Dauergrünlandfläche verwendet. Für die Simulation der beiden Weidesysteme wurden zwei verschiedene Aufwuchshöhen herangezogen (KW: 7 cm, KO: 10 cm). Die Koppel- erreichte 10.512 und die Kurzrasenweide 10.285 kg TM/ha ohne sich signifikant voneinander zu unterscheiden. Lediglich bei Rohprotein (XP) und der Energie zeigten sich signifikant höhere Gehalte bei Kurzrasen- (210 g/kg TM, 6,55 MJ NEL/kg TM) als bei der Koppelweide (193 g/kg TM, 6,45 MJ NEL/kg TM). In organic dairy farming, a major N input to the plant-soil system comes from biological N2 fixation by pasture legumes, but knowledge is sparse on how much of the fixed N2 is lost from the pastures as N2O. Nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria are the main contributors to the N2O production in soils. Currently, no contribution from biological N2 fixation in legume pastures is included in the national N2O inventories, partly because of uncertainties in quantifying the N2 fixation in the pastures (Mosier et al., 1998). Die Kurzrasenweide ist ein geeignetes Weidesystem für die Low-Input Milchviehhaltung und daher auch für die Biologische Landwirtschaft interessant. Weidehaltung bietet nicht nur wirtschaftliche Vorteile, sondern passt auch ideal zu den Werten der Biologischen Landwirtschaft. Bei der Umstellung eines Milchviehbetriebes auf ein Weide basiertes Fütterungssystem müssen vorher als Mähwiesen genutzte Flächen beweidet werden. Durch die Bewirtschaftungsänderung von einer Schnittwiese zur Kurzrasenweide sind Auswirkungen auf den Pflanzenbestand sowie auf die Mengen- und Qualitätserträge zu erwarten. Continuous grazing in comparison to cutting management on an organic meadow in the eastern Alps Organic Eprints

Continuous grazing is an appropriate pasture system for dairy cows in low input milk production systems like organic farming. Grazing increases for economic reasons and is also caused by regulations in organic farming. If a dairy farm converts a pasture-based system,cows will start grazing on a cutting-managed meadow. A discussion of norms for S supply in organic farming based on content in forage and ruminant performance in Norway Organic Eprints

The content of sulphur (S) in grassland on 27 Norwegian organic farms with dairy or sheep production was investigated in 2001 and 2002. The forage content of S was below the norms (2 g S kg DM-1) for both plants and animals in a large proportion of the samples. The average S content in forage at dairy farms was 1.4 g S kg DM-1 and at sheep farms 1.5 g. Even on grasslands with low plant S content (<1 g S kg DM-1), S-fertilization did not increase yields and increased the plants’ S content only very slightly. No indications of S deficiency were observed on the dairy farms. For one sheep farm with a forage S content of 1.1 ± 0.1g S kg DM-1, brittle and short winter wool was reported.

The Bavarian Grasslandmonitoring (Bavarian grassland survey) included more than 6000 grassland sites of different farming intensities and geographical and climatic conditions in the first survey 2002-2008. Substantial information on species number and composition was provided in a high spatial resolution. To investigate the changes in vegetation, 2485 of the vegetation surveys were repeated between 2009 and 2012, 350 of them with organic farming. On each plot of 25 m² the species composition and the proportion of total yield of each species were documented. In many organic grasslands herbs are established due to their expected beneficial properties for nutritive value and biodiversity. However, knowledge about grassland herbs is limited. Three mixtures were therefore established at different grazing/cutting and fertilization managements to examine the growth potential and feeding value. The competitiveness of the different species varied greatly. Chicory, plantain and caraway were competitive in mixtures with traditional grassland species. Denne biologiske proces er en forudsætning for at kunne drive økologisk jordbrug, og det har derfor stor interesse at kende størrelsen af N-fikseringen og have kendskab til hvilke faktorer der har betydning, for derved om muligt at kunne optimere produktiviteten og reducere eventuelle miljømæssige effekter af et givet dyrkningssystem. En lang række undersøgelser har vist, at der er en forholdsvis konstant relation mellem høstet kløvertørstof og N-fiksering. I kløvergræs udgør N-fikseringen således 30-35 kg N per tons høstet kløvertørstof. Dvs. at hvis der i en kløvergræs i løbet af vækstsæsonen er produceret f.eks. 8 tons tørstof pr. ha og den gennemsnitlige kløverandel har været 25%, bliver N-fikseringen 60-70 kg N/ha. The contribution of biologically fixed dinitrogen (N2) to the nitrous oxide (N2O) production in grasslands is unknown. To assess the contribution of recently fixed N2 as a source of N2O and the transfer of fixed N from clover to companion grass, mixtures of white clover and perennial ryegrass were incubated for 14 days in a 15N2-enriched atmosphere (0.4 atom% excess).
