Limnological patterns in northern pantanal lagoons BABT
Bleich,Monica Elisa; Silveira,Roberto Moraes Lima; Nogueira,Flávia Maria Barros.
The aim of this work was to correlate the limnological patterns recorded among ten lagoons in the northern part of the Pantanal of Mato Grosso with some aspects of the lagoons related to their physical and biological characteristics. Some lagoon characteristics, such as connection with the river and the presence of floating macrophytes were important to group similar lagoons into categories. Attempts were also made to determine which kind of the nutrients could be limiting phytoplankton productivity in the lagoons of the northern Pantanal. Data was collected in nine lagoons during the flooding stage in January 2004, and nutrient and chlorophyll a was followed in a tenth lagoon from June 2004 to October 2004. The phytoplankton biomass was significantly...

Limnological characteristics and seasonal changes in density and diversity of the phytoplanktonic community at the Caçó pond, Maranhão State, Brazil BABT
Dellamano-Oliveira,Maria José; Senna,Pedro Américo Cabral; Taniguchi,Glória Massae.
Seasonal changes of the phytoplanktonic community and limnological abiotic characteristics of Caçó pond (Maranhão State, Brazil) was evaluated from two field researches during the rainy (April 1999) and dry (November 1999) seasons. Measurements of twelve chemical and physical variables and phytoplankton collections were carried out at eight sampling stations. The Chlorophyceae and Cyanobacteria groups were in highest fractions during the rainy and dry seasons, respectively. The limnological abiotic variables showed a homogenous spatial distribution. The cluster analysis, using Bray-Curtis distance, distinguished two major groups, represented by the most common and abundant species in both the periods. The results showed that the climate regime, due to the...

Offshore distribution patterns of the cyanobacterium Trichodesmium erythraeum ehrenberg and associated phyto- and bacterioplankton in the southern Atlantic coast (Paraná, Brazil) BABT
Siqueira,Adriana; Kolm,Hedda Elisabeth; Brandini,Frederico Pereira.
Studies were carried out on Thrichodesmium erythraeum occurring on the inner shelf in the state of Paraná, Brazil. Temperature, salinity, rainfall, wind velocity, total bacteria, bacterial biomass, chlorophyll-a, phytoplankton, Anabaena sp., Merismopedia sp. and T. erythraeum densities were measured in surface water. Centric and pennate diatoms, Anabaena sp. and Merismopedia sp. were most abundant at 15 m isobath, while dinoflagellate abundance was relatively constant among stations. Similarly, total bacterial densities were relatively homogeneous throughout the sampling area, suggesting that blooms of T. erythraeum were not yet in the senescent phase. Results showed that T. erythraeum was capable of surviving in relatively inhospitable environmental...

Impacts of the construction of the Port of Suape on phytoplankton in the Ipojuca River estuary (Pernambuco-Brazil) BABT
Koening,Maria Luise; Leça,Enide Eskinazi; Neumann-Leitão,Sigrid; Macêdo,Silvio José de.
In order to address the impact on phytoplankton, sampling was conducted monthly at 4 fixed stations, from April/86 to March/87 at diurnal low and high tide using a plankton net (65 mum mesh size) and a 1 L Van Dorn bottle. Among the 133 taxa identified, marine littoral euryhaline species were most common, outranking Gyrosigma balticum (Ehrenberg) Rabenhorst, Nitzschia sigma (Kützing) Wm. Smith, Licmophora abbreviata Agardh, Climacosphenia moniligera Ehrenberg, Surirella febigerii Lewis, Terpsinoe musica Ehrenberg and Cylindrotheca closterium (Ehrenberg) Reiman and Lewis. The port construction caused significant changes to the phytoplankton community with a strong influence of marine species (mainly dinoflagellate) because of the opening of the reef near...

Structure and dynamics of phytoplankton community in the Botafogo reservoir-Pernambuco-Brazil BABT
Lira,Giulliari Alan da Silva Tavares de; Bittencourt-Oliveira,Maria do Carmo; Moura,Ariadne do Nascimento.
The aim of the present study was to investigate the structure and dynamics of the phytoplankton in the Botafogo reservoir-PE-Brazil. Phytoplankton assemblages were identified from current literature and density was estimated using an inverted microscope. Concurrently to the sampling of biotic variables, measurements of abiotic parameters, such as water temperature, dissolved oxygen and pH, were determined using field probes and transparency was determined with a Secchi disk. Total phosphorus and total nitrogen concentrations were determined in laboratory. A total of 24 taxa were identified. Chlorophyta presented the greatest number of species. Species diversity in the reservoir was low throughout the study period. Principal component analysis revealed that...

Structure of the phytoplankton in a water supply system in the State of Pernambuco - Brazil BABT
Moura,Ariadne do Nascimento; Dantas,Ênio Wocyli; Bittencourt-Oliveira,Maria do Carmo.
The aim of this work was to study the phytoplankton community composition at limnetic environment in Pernambuco, Brazil. Samplings were carried out from April/2001 to March/2002. Samples to analyses the biotic variables were taken using a recipient with a large overture, at the subsurface and with a Van Dorn bottle at the bottom. The rainfall data were recorded and the water transparency was used to calculate the light attenuation coefficient, photic zone and the determination of trophic state index. The concentrations of total phosphorus and total nitrogen were determined in a typical dry and rainy month. Equitability, also the, similarity and diversity indexes and the densities and correlation of total densities among depths were calculated. Forty-five...

Bacteria and phytoplankton production rates in eight river stretches of the middle Rio Doce hidrographic basin (southeast Brazil) BABT
Petrucio,Mauricio Mello; Barbosa,Francisco Antônio R.; Thomaz,Sidinei Magela.
Measurements of bacterial secondary production (BSP), together with primary phytoplanktonic production (PPP) were conducted during dry and rainy seasons, in eight rivers of different orders submitted to different degrees of human impacts (different trophic degree). We aimed to determine and compare the importance of BSP and PPP in carbon fixation in these different lotic ecosystems. Our results showed that the Ipanema River was the most modified system by anthropogenic effluents inputs. These inputs altered the trophic degree and BSP rates of these streams and rivers.

Variaciones espaciales y temporales del fitoplancton en un lago subtropical de Argentina BJB
ZALOCAR DE DOMITROVIC,YOLANDA; ASSELBORN,VIVIANA M.; CASCO,SYLVINA L..
Species composition, biomass and diversity of the phytoplankton in a subtropical lake (27°29'S; 58°45'W) were studied from February 1995 to March 1996. One or two samples were taken monthly in the limnetic and the littoral area. Cell counts were done by the Utermöhl method (1958). Phytoplankton biomass varied among 2.38 and 45.59 mm³.m-2 with a mean value of 12.11 (±10.52) mm³.m-2. The population density oscillated among 0.3x10(6) and 4.7x10(6) ind.cm-2. Cyanophyta was the dominant group all the year contributing among 25% and 83% of the total biomass. Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii, Aphanizomenon sp. and Microcystis aeruginosa were the dominant species. The Chlorophyta, second group in importance, contributed among 8% and 50% being Botryococcus braunii...

Photosynthetic capacity of three phytoplanktonic species measured by a pulse amplitude fluorometric method Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Figueredo,Cleber Cunha; Giani,Alessandra; Lemos Filho,José Pires.
During photosynthesis, absorbed energy that is not used in photochemical reactions dissipates as fluorescence. Fluorescence provides important information on the physiological conditions of the studied organisms and its measurement is widely used by plant physiologists and can be valuable in phytoplankton studies. We describe a method adapting a plant fluorometric equipment to measure the photosynthetic capacity of microalgae. Unialgal cultures of three planktonic chlorophytes were exposed to 3(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea (DCMU), an inhibitor of photosystem II, at concentrations of 0.1, 1.0 and 10.0 µmol.L-1. Estimates were made of photosynthetic parameters, including operational and potential photosystem II quantum yield and electron transport...
