Theory testing (hypothesis testing) in agricultural economics AgEcon
Meszaros, Sandor.
According to Karl Popper, economics and agricultural economics should be deemed scientific if the theories (hypotheses) are subject to strict tests. The testing of agro-economic theories goes back 50 years in the USA, Canada, Europe, and Japan, and these methods are becoming increasingly part of educational research methodology. In fact, the author of this paper teaches this very subject at Debrecen University, and for this reason has endeavoured to provide an overview on current trends in this field. The present overview first discusses the role of testing in the research process (cognition), and then analyses the various classification methods (types) of testing. It deals in detail with...

Construction of the Legal System of Forestry Carbon Sequestration Transaction in China AgEcon
Zou, Limei; Wang, Yuexian.
Legal nature of forestry carbon sequestration transaction in China is introduced. Forestry carbon sequestration transaction is a kind of formal, bilateral, consensual and compensatory legal behavior following the principle of autonomy and having the nature of contract. Legal regulation of forestry carbon sequestration transaction is necessary for making and using demonstration text of contract, distributing the subject right and responsibility of forestry carbon sequestration transaction, offering references for environmental protection and other fields, and developing the voluntary market of forestry carbon sequestration. Based on this, construction of legal system of forestry carbon sequestration transaction is discussed...

Factors affecting product innovations: A literature review AgEcon
Chryssochoidis, George M..
Product and process innovations are prime manifestations of innovativeness by an organization. Yet surprisingly little is known regarding how to initiate and maintain the innovative momentum in organizations with the ultimate target to produce an increasing number of product innovations and improve competitiveness. Of major concern has been however, the sheer volume of contributions on the subject and the complexity of issues involved. An extensive literature review has been carried out covering 400 scientific Journals during a 10-year long period (1991-2001). Over 2500 journal articles have been identified as relevant and read. Their contribution to the subject of product innovations...

Difficulties and Countermeasures of Developing Irrigation and Water Conservancy in New Era AgEcon
Qiao, Na.
This paper expounds the great significance of irrigation and water conservancy for the agricultural development. Vigorously developing irrigation and water conservancy can promote high yield and stable yield of grain, effectively increase farmers' income, alleviate the impact of drought on agricultural production, be conducive to the adjustment of agricultural production structure, and promote county economic development. The difficulties of developing irrigation and water conservancy in new era are analyzed as follows: the subject of liabilities defaults seriously: it lacks effective input security system; the quality of project degenerates badly; the agricultural technological development is slow Corresponding policy...

The Future of Environmental Compliance Incentives in U.S. Agriculture: The Role of Commodity, Conservation, and Crop Insurance Programs AgEcon
Claassen, Roger.
In recent years, direct payments—a type of farm commodity program payment—have made up a large share of Federal agriculture assistance that could be withheld from farmers who fail to comply with highly erodible land conservation (conservation compliance and sodbuster) or wetland conservation (swampbuster) provisions, known collectively as environmental compliance requirements. If direct payments are sharply reduced or eliminated to help reduce the Federal budget defi cit, compliance incentives would be reduced on many farms, potentially increasing environmental quality problems. Some farmers will still be subject to compliance through existing Federal agricultural programs(e.g., conservation or disaster programs) or...

Federal Tax Policies and Farm Households AgEcon
Durst, Ron L..
Significant changes in Federal individual income and estate tax policies have occurred over the last 10 years. Analysis suggests that changes in Federal tax provisions affecting both individual and business income taxes have reduced average tax rates for all farm households, resulting in the lowest tax burden on farm income and investment in a decade. Similarly, an analysis of the changes to Federal estate tax policies suggests that increases in the value of property that can be transferred to the next generation free of the estate tax, combined with special provisions for farmers and other small businesses, have greatly reduced the number of farm estates subject to the tax and the amount owed. While nearly 10 percent of...

Renegotiation Without Holdup: Anticipating Spending and Infrastructure Concessions AgEcon
Engel, Eduardo M.R.A.; Fischer, Ronald; Galetovic, Alexander.
Infrastructure concessions are frequently renegotiated after investments are sunk, resulting in better contractual terms for the franchise holders. This paper offers a political economy explanation for renegotiations that occur with no apparent holdup. We argue that they are used by political incumbents to anticipate infrastructure spending and thereby increase the probability of winning an upcoming election. Contract renegotiations allow administrations to replicate the effects of issuing debt. Yet debt issues are incorporated in the budget, must be approved by Congress and are therefore subject to the opposition's review. By contrast, under current accounting standards the obligations created by renegotiations circumvent...

Forecasting in the Presence of Level Shifts AgEcon
Smith, Aaron D..
This article addresses the problem of forecasting time series that are subject to level shifts. Processes with level shifts possess a nonlinear dependence structure. Using the stochastic permanent breaks (STOPBREAK) model, I model this nonlinearity in a direct and flexible way that avoids imposing a discrete regime structure. I apply this model to the rate of price inflation in the United States, which I show is subject to level shifts. These shifts significantly affect the accuracy of out-of-sample forecasts, causing models that assume covariance stationarity to be substantially biased. Models that do not assume covariance stationarity, such as the random walk, are unbiased but lack...

Subsidy Incidence in Agricultural Land Markets: An Experimental Investigation AgEcon
Nagler, Amy M.; Menkhaus, Dale J.; Bastian, Christopher T.; Ehmke, Mariah D..
We use laboratory market experiments to control for market power and social norms in order to evaluate market outcomes associated with subsidy incidence. We estimate the incidence of a stylized agricultural subsidy in laboratory land rental negotiations and compare the market behavior of university students to agricultural professionals. In separate sessions with both subject groups, 21.5 percent of a per-unit subsidy paid to the buyer (tenant) was passed on to sellers (landlords). The consistent treatment effect between students and professionals is encouraging, particularly in the use of experimental laboratory methods for ex ante analyses of agricultural policy impacts.

Regulation of Pax7 protein levels by caspase-3 and proteasome activity in differentiating myoblasts Biol. Res.
Olguín,Hugo C.
The transcription factor Pax7 negatively regulates the activity of the muscle regulatory transcription factor MyoD, preventing muscle precursor cells from undergoing terminal differentiation. In this context, the ratio between Pax7 and MyoD protein levels is thought to be critical in allowing myogenesis to proceed or to maintain the undifferentiated muscle precursor state. We have previously shown that Pax7 is subject to rapid down regulation in differentiating myoblasts, via a proteasome-dependent pathway. Here we present evidence indicating that Pax7 is also subject to caspase-3-dependent regulation. Furthermore, simultaneous inhibition of caspase-3 and proteasome activity induced...
