During the STARMER programme the submersibles Nautile and Shinkai-6500 carried out 14 dives on the NS segment of the North Fiji Basin Ridge (Station 14 at 18-degrees-50 S). From structural point of view, two types of morphology appear: in the northern part, the axis is not tectonically well expressed hut the hydrothermal activity is important. in the southern part, a graben structure 150 m wide exists, with both a.fossil and a present-day hydrothermal activity. The station 14 shows a morphostructural variability of the spreading axis which can be related to the different stages of the volcanic and tectonic cycles. Another station explored at 19-degrees-S, a few kilometres to the south, confirms the fact that different stages of tectonic and magmatic... |

The observations carried out during the "Cyaligure" submersible cruise emphasize the shaping action of the submarine currents and slidings during the Quaternary. The canyons located off the french Riviera (Provence), cut in late Oligocene detrital formations, have been the locus of several phases of in-filling, lithification and cutting phenomena throughout the Messinian epoch up to now. Consequently they can be considered as complex polygenetic structures. The canyons located off SW Corsica appear to be directly cut, in their upper course either in the cristalline basement or in volcanic lava formations. In their median part, they are cut in quaternary sediments and in their lower part in middle or late Miocene sedimentary units. The strong linear NW-SE... |

We present in this paper raw data and preliminary results of CYAGOR dives (July-August 1977) on Gorringe bank (SW Portugal). A series of eight dives with submersible SP 3000 Cyana, from 2 600 to 40 m depth, enabled us to observe the outcrop of the bank flanks, a nearly complete cross-section of oceanic crust and upper mantle. The structure seems to be little affected by fracturing and is slightly rocked to the NE. Cross-sections made during the dives show characteristics similar to those of an ophiolitic complex. |

The Alboran Sea (Figure 1) is a narrow sea (200 km wide), closed on the West by the "Arc of Gibraltar" and opening in the east into the Balearic Basin. The Betic chains extend along its northern border, the Rif chain extends along its southwest border, and its southern border is essentially formed by the Atlas Foreland. The Betico-Rif ensemble forms an arc having divergent structures (dipping away from the Alboran Sea). South of the sea, the Rif structures turn towards the northeast in contact with the autochthonous and semiautochthonous Atlas Foreland. The Rif and the Betic chains are affected by numerous northeast-southwest and northwest-southeast lateral faults whose role seems important (Kornprobst, 1971; Andrieux et al., 1971 ; Jacquin, 1970), but is... |

On October 19, 1979 off Nice, the upper continental shelf has been affected by a catastrophic event (Gennesseaux et al., 1980). (a) At 2 p.m. (approximate time), following a lowering of the sea level, a tsunami of several meters amplitude reached the Coast line south of Antibes. This was followed during 4 hours by several oscillations of decreasing amplitude, that were felt on a shore length of about 100 km. (b) About the same time, an embanked area 300 m long and wide, collapsed in a few seconds ; after the event the sea-floor in that area was found at a depth of 50 meters. (c) At 17h45 TU and 22h00 TU, two telephone cables have been broken 80 and 110 km off Nice respectively (fig. 1). (d) No earthquake was registered by the Monaco Observatory during this... |

Some seismic and magnetic profiles carried out south of the Big Bank of Newfoundland during the Noratlante cruise show a fracture zone which collapses the continental margin and continues to the south-east towards the Azores. This fracture zone proves evidence of the drift movement of Africa towards the east during the Jurassic or Trias opening of the Atlantic. From the south-east corner of the Big Bank, the fracture zone supports a sediment ridge formed by the underflows and which continues to the meridian 430 West. |

70 hydrothermal sites were observed during the 23 dives of the French submersible Nautile (''Naudur'' cruise, December 1993), at 17-degrees-19-degrees-S on the East Pacific Rise. Large vent-animal communities are present around these sites. The zoological composition of these communities is the same as that of the communities at 11-degrees-13-degrees-N and 21-degrees-N on the East Pacific Rise. However, the distribution of the species on the sites is different from all the other hydrothermal communities; large anemone fields of several hundred square metres, associated with colonies of Bathymodiolus and Calyptogena, have been observed. Fresh lava areas seem to bear the most important biological activity. |

A morphological analysis of the Baie desAnges (Nice) Seabeam map has been carried out in order to investigate the genesis of the Var and Paillon submarine canyons. From the identification of the morphological units at différent scales one is able to proposea model for the formation of the canyons, The Var and Paillon canyons are interpreted as being cut in a deep-sea fan presently being destroyed by mass wasting processes. .The structural framework exhibits an orthogonal fault system which plays a prominent role in the spatial distribution of the canyons and the sliding areas. The age of these canyons is thought to be Quatenary. |

0bservations made from the submersible SP 3000 Cyana on the southern flank of mount Ormonde (Gorringe Bank) have shown that in oceanic depths, processes of alteration and disintegration of gabbros and dolerites occurred. These processes give us a better understanding of source zones of Alps, Apennines and Corsica where sands, breccias and olistoliths ofgabbros outcrop. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR] |

69 new hydrothermal sites were discovered during the Naudur diving cruise. Dives were conducted between 17 degrees 5 and 18 degrees 40'5 on four segments showing marked contrast in morphology, volcanic, tectonic and hydrothermal activity. At 17 degrees 10'5, 17 degrees 25'5 and 18 degrees 37'5 the ridge has a dome shaped cross-section and is dominated by very active volcanic activity. Early widespread low temperature (<50 degrees C) diffuse hydrothermal discharge is followed by focused high temperature black smokers. At 18 degrees 15'S tectonic activity is dominant, no recent lava was observed, and only two of the 20 hydrothermal sites are active. At 18 degrees 32'5 recent lava representing a new volcanic episode partly covers the bottom of the graben.... |

Surveying an ultra‐fast spreading ridge along the East Pacific Rise (EPR), explorers aboard the submersible Nautile examined features such as lava pillows and tubes, sulfide chimneys, black smokers, hot shimmering waters, and colonies of animals living in hydrothermal vents to learn more about the processes of accretion and tectonics on the ocean floor. Taken together, the observations of the EPR between 17°S and 19°S from the 1993 NAUDUR cruise (a French acronym for Nautile on Ultra‐fast Ridge) indicate recent volcanic eruptions occurring as frequently as every few years. The NAUDUR cruise was designed to study the interaction between magmatic, tectonic, and hydrothermal processes at an ultra‐fast spreading axis of the EPR. Researchers performing twenty... |

The Alboran Sea is made up of two distinct basins. The first one has approximately the shape of a lozenge, surrounded by the arc of Gibraltar and the two thresholds (northern and southern) of Alboran. It is about a hundred kilometres at its largest width. Its average depth is only 1 300 m, that is 1 000 m less than in the Algero-balearic and Provencal basins. The second one is elongated, deeper (1 800 to 2 000 m) and is widely open to the east and northeast on the algero-balearic basin. The route to this latter basin is made through a more marked slope of a gradient of around 500 m and oriented NNE-SSW. |

The study of seismic profiles (made with Sparker and with air-gun) recorded in the Alboran sea helps us to complete and modify an interpretation which was previously made. Further to complementary data on the structural frame, we showed the existence of a salt layer topped with evaporites, in the basins situated on both sides of the Alboran ridges. With regard to the thick infra-salt layer in the western Alboran basin, it appears that the basement of the basin, as a whole, is at a depth similar to the depth of the North-African basin. This supports the hypothesis of a common origin and evolution for both basins. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR] |

The new bathymetric, magnetic and mainly seismic data acquired during the Zoesis cruise, reveal the presence of compressional features in the ''Fairway Ridge-Fairway Basin-Lord Howe Rise (northern part)'' area, west of New Caledonia. The compressive strain is especially responsible for the formation of the Fairway Ridge. The compression is emphasized by a regional unconformity that could be dated late Eocene, according to DSDP data in the area, and therefore synchronous with the late Eocene obduction of the New Caledonia ophiolites. The westward extension of the late Eocene compressive strain in the New Caledonia area is more developed than previously thought. |
