Ion fluxes in silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) juveniles exposed to different dissolved oxygen levels Neotropical Ichthyology
Rosso,Felipe Link de; Bolner,Keidi C. S.; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
Low dissolved oxygen levels in the water (hypoxia) can be provoked by oxygen consumption by fish and other organisms, organic matter decomposition, phytoplankton blooms, and temperature increase. The objective of the present study was to investigate Na+, Cl-, K+, and ammonia fluxes in silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) exposed to different dissolved oxygen levels. Juveniles (9 ± 1g) maintained at 6.0 mg.L-1 dissolved oxygen were transferred to four 40 L aquaria with different dissolved oxygen levels (in mg.L-1): 6.0, 4.5, 3.5, and 2.5. In another series of experiments, juveniles were acclimated at 6.0 or 2.5 mg.L-1 dissolved oxygen levels, and then placed in two 40 L aquaria with 6.0 mg.L-1 dissolved oxygen. For both series of experiments, 1, 24, 48 or 120 h...

Transport of jundiá Rhamdia quelen juveniles at different loading densities: water quality and blood parameters Neotropical Ichthyology
Carneiro,Paulo César Falanghe; Kaiseler,Pedro Henriques da Silva; Swarofsky,Elaine de Azambuja Correia; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
Fish transportation is a common practice on fish farms and is considered to be a stressor that could negatively affect fish health. The objective of this study was to evaluate several physiological responses of stress in jundiá caused by transport at different loading densities. Jundiá juveniles were placed in plastic bags on a mechanical transport simulator for four hours at four different loading densities (75, 150, 250 and 350 g L-1) and then transferred to sixteen 80-L plastic boxes for 96 hours after transport. Water samples were collected before and after transport to measure dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH and ammonia levels. Blood samples were taken at departure and arrival, as well as at 24 and 96 hours after transport to monitor cortisol,...

Cunha,Jessyka A. da; Scheeren,Cecília Á.; Salbego,Joseânia; Gressler,Luciane T.; Madaloz,Laurício M.; Bandeira-Junior,Guerino; Bianchini,Adriane E.; Pinheiro,Carlos G.; Bordignon,Sérgio A. L.; Heinzmann,Berta M.; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
ABSTRACT This study evaluated anesthetic efficacy and possible effects of the essential oils (EOs) of Cunila galioides (EOC) and Origanum majorana (EOO) on ventilatory rate (VR) and ionoregulation in Rhamdia quelen. In the anesthesia assessments, 50, 100, 200 and 300 μL L-1 EOC and 50, 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 μL L-1 EOO were tested, and time for induction to sedation and anesthesia stages, as well as recovery, were taken. A second trial employed lower concentrations of both EOs, 10, 25, 50 and 100 μL L-1, in order to verify VR and Na+, K+ and Cl- whole body net fluxes. Sedation was achieved with both oils at 100 µL L-1, and anesthesia at ≥ 200 µL L-1. There was no significant difference between control and EO-treated groups regarding VR, but all fish...

The effect of water pH on the incubation and larviculture of curimbatá Prochilodus lineatus (Valenciennes, 1837) (Characiformes: Prochilodontidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Reynalte-Tataje,David Augusto; Baldisserotto,Bernardo; Zaniboni-Filho,Evoy.
Different pH levels of water in the incubation and larviculture of 'curimbatá' (Prochilodus lineatus) were tested to evaluate the effect of this variable on the survival and development of eggs and larvae. During incubation, pH of 5.0, 6.0, 7.0, 8.0, and 8.5 was tested. To observe the effects of pH on larvae with different hatchery histories, the following experimental design was utilised (pH incubation - pH larviculture): L 6-6; L 6-7; L 7-6; L 7-7; L 7-8; L 8-7; L 8-8; L 8.5-7, and L 8.5-8.5. At pH 5.0 and four hours after incubation, an almost total mortality of incubated eggs was seen. Eggs incubated at pH 6.0 to 8.5 had similar fertilization and survival rates at the end of incubation, although eggs and larvae incubated at pH 6.0 had a smaller...

Survival, growth and metabolic parameters of silver catfish, Rhamdia quelen, juveniles exposed to different waterborne nitrite levels Neotropical Ichthyology
Lima,Ronaldo L. de; Braun,Neiva; Kochhann,Daiani; Lazzari,Rafael; Radünz Neto,João; Moraes,Bibiana S.; Loro,Vania L.; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
High nitrite (NO2-) levels may develop in aquaculture systems due to high fish density, but studies of lethal concentration values and the effect of NO2- on metabolic parameters and growth are scarce. Consequently, in this study was verified the lethal concentration at 96 h (LC50-96h) for (NO2-) in juvenile silver catfish, Rhamdia quelen and the effect of four waterborne NO2- concentrations (0.06, 0.46, 1.19, and 1.52 mg.L-1) on growth, and hepatic and muscular lactate, glucose, glycogen and protein. Nitrite LC50-96h was 20.46 (confidence interval: 16.10-23.68) mg.L-1. In the growth experiment, exposure to NO2- did not affect weight, length or specific growth rate, but due to mortality (66.7% and 100% after 20 and 40 days, respectively), biomass of...

Preference behavior of silver catfish, Rhamdia quelen, juveniles in waters with pH gradients: laboratory experiments Neotropical Ichthyology
Golombieski,Jaqueline Ineu; Becker,Alessandra Janaína; Almeida,Caroline Bruzza; Almeida,Ana Paula Gottlieb; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
The aim of this study was to determine the preferred pH in silver catfish Rhamdia quelenjuveniles acclimated to different water hardness and the effect of shelters and infection by Ichthyophthirius multifiliis. Fish were acclimated for two weeks at different water hardness levels (4, 24, 50, or 100 mg CaCO3 L-1) and then transferred to a polyethylene tube with a pH gradient ranging from 3.5 to 11.7 and maintaining the same hardness. The position of the fish in the pH gradient was observed at 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 h after transfer. Acclimation to different water hardness did not change pH preference of uninfected silver catfish (pH 7.30-7.83), and the presence of a shelter at the preferred pH or outside this preferred pH did not change the chosen pH...

Silva,Lenise de Lima; Silva,Daniela Thomas da; Garlet,Quelen Iane; Cunha,Mauro Alves; Mallmann,Carlos Augusto; Baldisserotto,Bernardo; Longhi,Solon Jonas; Pereira,Ana Maria Soares; Heinzmann,Berta Maria.
There is an increasing demand for inexpensive and safe anesthetics that can reduce fish stress caused by some procedures such as capture and handling. In this context, the present study evaluated the potential of essential oils (EO) of three Brazilian native plants (Hesperozygis ringens, Lippia sidoides and Ocotea acutifolia) as anesthetics for the silver catfish - Rhamdia quelen. Moreover, an analysis was made of the chemical composition of these oils and their influence on stress parameter. EO of H. ringens and O. acutifolia were effective as anesthetics, without behavioral side effects. EO of O. acutifolia (150 µL L-1) promoted an increase in blood glucose level. Regarding to the composition, pulegone accounts for 96.63% of the EO of H. ringens, and...

Effect of humic acid on survival, ionoregulation and hematology of the silver catfish, Rhamdia quelen (Siluriformes: Heptapteridae), exposed to different pHs Rev. Bras. Zool.
Costa,Silvio T. da; Gressler,Luciane T.; Sutili,Fernando J.; Loebens,Luíza; Lazzari,Rafael; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
This study evaluates whether humic acid (HA; Aldrich) protects the silver catfish, Rhamdia quelen (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824), against exposure to acidic pH. Survival, levels of Na+, Cl- and K+ plasma, hematocrit, hemoglobin and erythrocyte morphometry were measured. Fish were exposed to 0, 10, 25 and 50 mg L 1 HA at four pH levels: 3.8, 4.0, 4.2 and 7.0 up to 96 hours. None of the fish exposed to pH 3.8 survived for 96 hours into the experiment, and survival of fish subjected to pH 4.0 decreased when HA concentration increased. Plasma Na+ levels decreased when pH was acidic, with no influence of HA, while Cl- levels declined at low pH with increased HA concentration. The levels of K+ at pH 4.0 and 4.2 increased without HA. Hematocrit and hemoglobin...

Becker,Alessandra Janaína; Fogliarini,Carine de Oliveira; Souza,Carine de Freitas; Becker,Alexssandro Geferson; Mourão,Rosa Helena Veras; Silva,Lenise Vargas Flôres da; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
ABSTRACT This study investigated the efficacy of essential oils of Lippia alba (EOLA) citral chemotype and Lippia origanoides (EOLO) and their effects on ventilatory frequency (VF) of silver catfish, Rhamdia quelen. Fish were exposed to 50-300 μL L−1 of EOLA and 25-300 μL L−1 of EOLO to determine induction times to sedation, anesthesia, and recovery. Moreover, VF was determined in fish exposed to 5 or 10 μL L−1 of EOLA and of EOLO for 8 h. The increasing concentration of essential oils proportionally decreased sedation and anesthesia induction times. The highest EOLA concentration increased VF of fish from the control group at 1 h of exposure, but VF decreased at both EOLO concentrations after 2 h. The EOLA citral chemotype and EOLO were effective...

Sublethal adverse effects may result from exposure of aquatic organisms to insecticides at environmentally relevant concentrations. Fingerlings of the common carp (Cyprinus carpio, Linnaeus, 1758), grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella, Valenciennes, 1844), and bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis, Richardson, 1845) were exposed to diafuran, an insecticide widely used during rice cultivation in Southern Brazil. The aim of this study was to verify the relationship between the lethal concentration (LC50) of diafuran and the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity in brain and muscle tissues of these species as a possible early biomarker of exposure to this insecticide. LC50 was determined for fish exposed to diafuran concentrations during 96 h (short term): common...

Action of the extracts of Pluchea sagittalis on the absorptive characteristics of the gastrointestinal tract BABT
Burger,Marilise E.; Baldisserotto,Bernardo; Teixeira,Elisângela P.; Soares,Joceana.
Pluchea sagittalis (Lam.) Cabrera, (quitoco or erva lucera) is commonly used to treat digestive disorders in Southern Brazil and countries of the South Cone. The crude aqueous extracts from the leaves, stalks or flowers were used in acute oral toxicity in mice and in pharmacological studies to determine the gastrointestinal transport of water, sodium, and potassium in rats. The oral administration of 5000 mg/kg of extracts examined did not produce signs of intoxication nor induce the death of any mice during the period of 14 days. The extracts from the leaves and stalk have reduced the absorption of water in the jejunum and jejunum and ileum, respectively with relation to the control. There was an absorption of sodium with the administration of these...

Low water hardness and pH affect growth and survival of silver catfish juveniles Ciência Rural
Copatti,Carlos Eduardo; Garcia,Luciano de Oliveira; Kochhann,Daiani; Cunha,Mauro Alves da; Becker,Alexssandro Geferson; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of exposure to low water hardness (0, 25 and 50mg CaCO3L-1) into the 6.0-8.0 pH range to silver catfish juveniles (Rhamdia quelen) survival and growth after 32 days. Juveniles kept at zero water hardness presented higher mortality at pH 7.0 and 8.0 than those submitted to other treatments. Weight of juveniles exposed to pH 6.0 and zero water hardness was significantly higher than those kept at the same water hardness and other pH. Survival and growth of juveniles exposed to 25 and 50mg CaCO3 L-1 was not affected in the 6.0-8.0 pH range. Therefore, the best water hardness for silver catfish juveniles growth is 25-50mg CaCO3 L-1 and at low water hardness (next zero) pH must be reduced.

Waterborne ammonia and silver catfish, Rhamdia quelen: survival and growth Ciência Rural
Miron,Denise dos Santos; Becker,Alexssandro Geferson; Loro,Vania Lúcia; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of waterborne un-ionized ammonia (NH3) on the survival and growth of silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen). Juveniles were exposed to 0.10, 0.22, and 0.42mg L-1 NH3 at pH 8.2 for 45 days. After 15 days, a significant mortality rate (33%) was observed in the fish exposed to 0.42mg L-1 NH3. After 20 days, 23% and 43% mortality (both significant) was observed in fish exposed to 0.22 and 0.42mg L-1 NH3, respectively. A significant negative relationship between survival, length, daily weight gain, standard growth rate, and biomass of juveniles of silver catfish per tank with waterborne NH3 levels was found at the end of the experiment. The resulting survival and waterborne NH3 relationship indicated that, to...

A mathematical model for growth in weight of silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) (Heptapteridae, Siluriformes, Teleostei) Ciência Rural
Benaduce,Ana Paula da Silva; Rodrigues,Luiz Alberto Díaz; Mistro,Diomar Cristina; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
The use of a mathematical model applied to biological science helps to predict the specific data. Based on biological data (weight and age) of silver catfish, Rhamdia quelen, a mathematical model was elaborated based on a nonlinear difference equation to demonstrate the relationship between age and growth in weight. Silver catfish growth was described following the Beverton-Holt model Pt+1 = (r Pt) / (1+ a Pt ), where r > 0 is the maximum growth rate and a > 0 is a constant of growth inhibition. The solution of this equation is Pt= 1 /{[1/P0 - a / (r-1)] 1/r t + a/ (r-1)}, were P0 is the initial weight of the fish. Through this model it was observed that the female reaches the theoretical maximum weight approximately at the age of 18 years and the...
