Response of the Rhone deltaic margin to loading and subsidence during the last climatic cycle ArchiMer
Jouet, Gwenael; Hutton, E; Syvitski, J; Berne, Serge.
Passive continental margin subsidence is initiated by the synrift mechanical stretching of the lithospheric upper brittle layer and continues during the postrift phase; the thermal cooling and contraction of the upwelled asthenosphere forces the margin to subside in addition to the overloads from sea water and sediments. Therefore, the total subsidence in stretched basins includes fault-controlled initial sinking, thermal subsidence and flexural isostatic compensations. Decoupling and estimating the different components of this subsidence from stratigraphic analysis and restricted geophysical and sedimentological databases remains problematic. In particular, backstripping the sediment layers requires a well-constrained geological framework. A method is...

Stratigraphy and sedimentary environments during the Late Quaternary, in the Eastern Bohai Sea (North China Platform) ArchiMer
Marsset, Tania; Xia, D; Berne, Serge; Liu, Z; Bourillet, Jean-francois; Wang, K.
The Bohai Sea is a shallow sea at the east coast of China. It communicates with the Yellow Sea through a narrow strait. During and since the Late Pleistocene, the Bohai Sea has been a filled subsiding basin submitted to successive regressive-transgressive cycles. In the East Bohai Sea, a number of finger-shaped ridges are present near the strait, where tidal currents are dominant. Very-high resolution seismic reflection data have been interpreted relative to sedimentological data provided by a formerly drilled borehole. Seven seismic units are identified and correlated with the following events: units U7-U6 with the Bohai relative sea level rise (65,000–53,000 yr B.P.) and a relative sea level fall (53,000–39,000 yr B.P.); unit U5 with the Xianxian...

Vegetation dynamics in southern France during the last 30 ky BP in the light of marine palynology ArchiMer
Beaudouin, Célia; Jouet, Gwenael; Suc, Jean-pierre; Berne, Serge; Escarguela, Gilles.
The composition of the glacial vegetation of southern French plains has been a matter of debate for several decades. Vegetation is considered as steppic according to French and Spanish lacustrine pollen records whereas cave deposits suggest the presence of mesothermophilous trees through the Last Glacial Maximum. In our paper, we display new palynological records from marine sediments of the Gulf of Lions. They indicate the presence of Abies, Picea and deciduous Quercus in the Gulf of Lions, certainly located in the drainage basins of the Pyreneo-Languedocian rivers. These populations that were sensitive to short climatic events during Marine Isotopic Stage 2 could have been linked to northeastern Spanish and southeastern French relicts already evidenced...

Massive sand beds attributed to deposition by dense water cascades in the Bourcart canyon head, Gulf of Lions (northwestern Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer
Gaudin, Mathieu; Berne, Serge; Jouanneau, J.-m.; Palanques, A; Puig, P; Mulder, T; Cirac, P; Rabineau, Marina; Imbert, P.
Nowadays, the Gulf of Lions continental shelf and slope are under the influence of dense water cascading, wind-induced bottom currents and the geostrophic Northern Current. In order to characterize sedimentary activity at the shelf break, several interface and piston cores were taken in the Bourcart canyon head and a current meter equipped with temperature, conductivity, pressure and turbidity sensors was moored during the 2003-2004 winter season. Even if the canyon is not connected directly to continental sources since Last Glacial Maximum, detailed grain size, X-ray and sediment facies analysis of interface cores show that down to 350 m water depth, the canyon head is blanketed by up to 1.5 m of structureless muddy medium-grained sand. 210 Pb-exc...

The Gulf of Lions: An overview of recent studies within the French 'Margins' Programme ArchiMer
Berne, Serge; Gorini, C.
Within the French 'Margins' Programme (Groupement de Recherches 'Marges', or 'GDR Marges'), The Gulf of Lions was selected as a key area where scientists specialized in complementary aspects of geosciences (structural geology, tectonics, stratigraphy, sedimentology, various aspects of modeling) work together in order to better understand the processes that control the formation and evolution of continental margins. A key objective was to link offshore data (that mainly consist of seismic data and few wells) and onshore studies (mainly based on well and field data). This special edition of Marine and Petroleum Geology on the Gulf of Lions presents some of the main results obtained during three years of research by the group 'GDR Marges-Golfe du Lion'.

Chronology and sources of trace elements accumulation in the Rhône pro-delta sediments (Northwestern Mediterranean) during the last 400years ArchiMer
Cossa, Daniel; Fanget, Anne-sophie; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Bassetti, M-a; Buscail, R.; Dennielou, Bernard; Briggs, K.; Arnaud, M; Guedron, S.; Berne, Serge.
The Rhône pro-delta sediments receive the particulate inputs from the Rhône River, the largest freshwater discharge of the Western Mediterranean Sea. Trace element (TEs: Ag, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) concentrations and stable Pb isotope ratios were determined along a 7.7-meter-long sediment core collected from the Rhône prodeltaic lobe, archiving the deposits of the last 400 years. Trace element mean concentrations during the pre-industrialized era (before 1850 AD) were no different from the average composition of Earth’s upper crust, except for Cr. Principal component analysis, performed on TEs and tracers, suggests three origins for TEs that we identified as (i) marine biogenic material (Ag, Cd), (ii) ultramafic rocks (Li, Cr, Ni), and (iii) other...

Strata formation in the Gulf of Lions during the last glacial cycles : an overview ArchiMer
Berne, Serge; Bassetti, Maria-angela; Baztan, J; Dennielou, Bernard; Gaudin, M; Rabineau, Marina; Jouet, Gwenael; Sultan, Nabil.
Promess 1 was the first scientific drilling operation in the Gulf of Lions. Together with Eurostrataform, these 2 European projects provided a huge amount of new data that allows us to analyse, from « sink to source », the main processes that control strata architecture on a deltaic margin. In the deep-sea, The Rhone deep sea fan functioning is strongly controlled by sea-level changes: it functions as a classical channel/levee system as long as a direct connection exists between the Rhone river and the canyon head. Following MWP1A, only episodic mass wasting, triggered by dense water cascading, feeds the system. At this time, erosion of lowstand shelf shorefaces is the major source of sand to the deep-sea. Evidence for pre-Messinian submarine canyons on the Gulf of Lions slope (Western Mediterranean) ArchiMer
Lofi, J; Berne, Serge.
On the Gulf of Lions margin, the Messinian Salinity Crisis (MSC) event led to a significant and widespread erosion of the Miocene shelf and slope. It is thus difficult nowadays to restore the morphology of the margin at the beginning of the crisis, and to study the Middle-Upper Miocene series rarely preserved from erosion. In this study, thanks to the use of multichannel seismic reflection data from the Gulf of Lions western slope, it has been possible to image the Miocene slope deposits. Interpretation of the data reveals several diachronic sediment bodies just beneath the Miocene/Pliocene boundary. These bodies are related to slope erosional-depositional complexes, underlain by erosional unconformities outlined by seismic reflector truncations. They are...

A 500 kyr record of global sea-level oscillations in the Gulf of Lion, Mediterranean Sea: new insights into MIS 3 sea-level variability ArchiMer
Frigola, J.; Canals, M.; Cacho, I.; Moreno, A.; Sierro, F. J.; Flores, J. A.; Berne, Serge; Jouet, Gwenael; Dennielou, Bernard; Herrera, G.; Pasqual, C.; Grimalt, J. O.; Galavazi, M.; Schneider, R..
Borehole PRGL1-4 drilled in the upper slope of the Gulf of Lion provides an exceptional record to investigate the impact of late Pleistocene orbitally-driven glacio-eustatic sea-level oscillations on the sedimentary outbuilding of a river fed continental margin. High-resolution grain-size and geochemical records supported by oxygen isotope chronostratigraphy allow reinterpreting the last 500 ka upper slope seismostratigraphy of the Gulf of Lion. Five main sequences, stacked during the sea-level lowering phases of the last five glacial-interglacial 100-kyr cycles, form the upper stratigraphic outbuilding of the continental margin. The high sensitivity of the grain-size record down the borehole to sea-level oscillations can be explained by the great width of...

Clay mineral evolution in the central Okinawa Trough since 28 ka: Implications for sediment provenance and paleoenvironmental change ArchiMer
Dou, Yanguang; Yang, Shouye; Liu, Zhenxia; Clift, Peter D.; Yu, Hua; Berne, Serge; Shi, Xuefa.
The Okinawa Trough is a natural laboratory for the study of later Quaternary land-ocean interaction and paleoenvironmental changes. In this study we reconstruct the evolution of clay mineral assemblages in Core DGKS9604 retrieved from the central Okinawa Trough. Illite dominates the clay mineral compositions, with average contents above 60%. Clay mineral evolution since 28 ka is closely related to changes in sediment provenance and paleoenvironment. Sea level rise and the strength of the Kuroshio Current control the dispersal and deposition of clays on the East China Sea shelf and in the Okinawa Trough, and thus, determine the clay mineral compositions in the core sediments. During the late last glacial period (28.0-14.0 ka), the paleo-Changjiang River...

Epi-bathyal ostracod assemblage in Holocene Rhone deltaic sediments (Gulf of Lions, NW Mediterranean) and their palaeoecological implications ArchiMer
Fanget, Anne-sophie; Bassetti, Maria Angela; Berne, Serge; Arnaud, Mireille.
Since the Last Glacial Maximum, the Rhone River, which is the most important source of freshwater and sediment to the western Mediterranean Sea, migrated in a north-westward direction during the rapid Deglacial and Early Holocene sea-level rise. During the phase of global high sea-level (Middle and Late Holocene), an overall eastward migration of the Rhone outlet, under natural and/or human influence, is recorded through several sediment accumulations confined along the inner shelf in the form of deltaic lobes. These lobes that make up the whole Rhone subaqueous delta represent very expanded sedimentary archives of the Rhone Holocene history. In this paper, using three long piston cores retrieved from the most recent Bras de Fer (RHS-KS55) and Roustan...

Holocene hydrological changes in the Rhone River (NW Mediterranean) as recorded in the marine mud belt ArchiMer
Bassetti, Maria-angela; Berne, Serge; Sicre, Marie-alexandrine; Dennielou, Bernard; Alonso, Yoann; Buscail, Roselyne; Jalali, Bassem; Hebert, Bertil; Menniti, Christophe.
Expanded marine Holocene archives are relatively scarce in the Mediterranean Sea because most of the sediments were trapped in catchment areas during this period. Mud belts are the most suitable targets to access expanded Holocene records. These sedimentary bodies represent excellent archives for the study of sea-land interactions and notably the impact of the hydrological activity on sediment accumulation. We retrieved a 7.2m long sediment core from the Rhone mud belt in the Gulf of Lions in an area where the average accumulation rate is ca. 0.70 m 1000 yr(-1). This core thus provides a continuous and high-resolution record of the last 10 ka cal BP. A multiproxy dataset (XRF core scan, C-14 dates, grain size and organic-matter analysis) combined with...

Sand bodies at the shelf edge in the Gulf of Lions (Western Mediterranean): Deglacial history and modern processes ArchiMer
Bassetti, Maria-angela; Jouet, Gwenael; Dufois, Francois; Berne, Serge; Rabineau, Marina; Taviani, M.
The outer continental shelf of the Gulf of Lions is covered by thick, mainly regressive, sand deposits. A combination of seismic, sedimentological and geochronological methods allows us to demonstrate that a veneer of transgressive sand bodies, few m to less than 1 m thick, reworks these deposits. They take the form of sand ridges and transverse dunes that formed at different periods. In fact, the low-gradient outer shelf of the Gulf of Lions displays a complete record of deglacial history, including not only transgressive deposits that formed during sea-level rise, but also bedfonns that still evolve under episodic high-energy events that occur under more highstand conditions. Core lithology, C-14 dates and regional sea-level curve suggest that the...

Seaward pinching out and internal stratigraphy of the Gironde incised valley on the shelf (Bay of Biscay) ArchiMer
Lericolais, Gilles; Berne, Serge; Fenies, Hugues.
An incised paleovalley offshore the estuary mouth of the Gironde River (Southwest France) was evidenced recently (Comptes Rendus de 1'Academie des Sciences de Paris 326 (1998) 701). Nevertheless its seaward extension to the shelf break was still unknown. New high-resolution geophysical data were acquired on the continental shelf in order to follow the incision until the shelf break. After processing the seismic lines, the shape of the valley was identified and the valley-fill in terms of sequence stratigraphy was interpreted. The valley-fill contains a single sequence corresponding to a fifth-order cycle (20 kyr). The three Systems Tracks described onshore by Alien and Posamentier (Journal of Sedimentary Petrology 63 (1993) 378; SEPM (Society for...

Axial incision: The key to understand submarine canyon evolution (in the western Gulf of Lion) ArchiMer
Baztan, Juan; Berne, Serge; Olivet, Jean-louis; Rabineau, Marina; Aslanian, Daniel; Gaudin, Mathieu; Rehault, Jean Pierre; Canals, M.
A detailed morphological analysis of the outer shelf and continental slope of the Western Gulf of Lion is presented, based on swath bathymetry data together with sub-bottom profiles and high resolution seismic reflection profiles. These data reveal two main erosive features, of very different dimensions: the axial incision and the canyon's major valley. The height of axial incisions' flanks with respect to the canyon deepest point (the thalweg) ranges from 40 to 150 m. It creates a small axial erosive path within the canyon's major valley, which is typically bounded by flanks of more than 700 m in height. We interpret the axial incision observed in the sea floor as the imprint of turbidity currents that eroded the floor of canyons during phases of...

"AMOCO CADIZ" Cartographie des apports polluants et des zones contaminées ArchiMer
Berne, Serge; D'Ozouville, Laurent.

Overpressure within upper continental slope sediments from CPTU data, Gulf of Lion, NW Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Lafuerza, S.; Sultan, Nabil; Canals, M.; Frigola, J.; Berne, Serge; Jouet, Gwenael; Galavazi, M.; Sierro, F. J..
Data from in situ piezocone tests (CPTU) and laboratory analyses are utilized for the interpretation of the stress history of Quaternary sedimentary sequences in the upper continental slope of the Gulf of Lion, northwestern Mediterranean Sea. A CPTU based preconsolidation pressure profile referenced to the current effective stress indicates that the deposit is underconsolidated from 12 meters below the seafloor (mbsf) down to at least 150 mbsf. Excess pore pressure below 12 mbsf is further supported by results from oedometer and dissipation tests. Subseafloor pockmarks and indications of free gas in seismic reflection profiles reveal four main overpressure sources (SI-SIV) with overpressure ratios > 0.3 at subseafloor depths coinciding with levels where...

Sedimentary processes and facies on the northern Aquitaine shelf, France. ArchiMer
Cirac, Pierre; Berne, Serge; Castaing, Patrice; Weber, Olivier.
The Aquitaine shelf in France is a storm-dominated shelf similar to the Californian shelf in the US. It exhibits a thin veneer (about 1-2 m) of sandy sediments overlying coarse-grained deposits. This surficial sand sheet is shaped into various bed forms corresponding to the contrasted physical processes operating at different water depths and time-scales. These bed forms are: a) sand patches separated by depressions or 'furrows', b) large transverse dunes and c) large wave ripples. The overall architecture of the sand cover is considered as resulting from the stacking of several storm beds. During the last post-glacial sea-level rise, the magnitude of reworking processes progressively decreased as a result of increasing water depth. This is demonstrated by...

Direct traces of past sea levels are based on the elevation of old coral reefs at times of sea level high-stands. However, these measurements are discontinuous and cannot be easily correlated with climate records from ice cores. In this study we show a new approach to recognizing the imprint of sea level changes in continuous sediment records taken from the continental slope at locations that were continuously submerged, even during periods of sea level lowstand. By using a sediment core precisely synchronized with Greenland ice cores, we were able to recognize major floods of the Mediterranean continental shelf over the past 270 kyr. During the last glacial period five flooding events were observed at the onset of the warmest Greenland interstadials....
