| Two main conditions are necessary for the extensive culture of king scallop: 1.The getting of spats, 2.A good survival rate for these spats in their natural environment. These two criteria enable the definition of the technical standards giving way to an economic analysis. Until now, the only solution to a juvenile production is their collection in their natural environment, on high adult density deposits. At the time being, out of all the French deposits, that of Saint-Brieuc is the only one answering this characteristic. However, even in this case, spat collection has not yet reached the necessary reliability. Indeed, the amount of spat collected for a year will rely on two main factors: 1.The state of the brood stock, 2.The climatic conditions. |

| A study of pearl oysters Pinctada margaritifera growth and mortality was done on a monthly basis between June 1990 and September 1991 in Takapoto atoll (Tuamotu archipelago). Meanwhile, sampling parameters representative of bivalves food showed a remarquable spatial stability whithin the lagoon. The amplitude of temporal variability varied in the order of some days. Carrying capacity appears low : energetic content of particulate material in waters is about 2 joules/liter, ten times lower than in temperate areas. On the opposite, seasonal effect is reduced and particulate food is always available. | Artificial production from natural spawners could be a way of getting big quantities of spat of Pecten maximus, ln the method described, larval phase (until a size of 250 microns) occurs in a hatchery, post-Iarval phase (from 250 µ until 3 millimeters) in a nursery, and first growth period directly into the sea (from 2 mm to a size of 25-30 mm), The fifst results obtained, production of several thousand of individuals good enough for reseeding, seem to be transposable to a larger scale. |

| Results of research concerning the food of the pearl oyster Pinctada mai margaritifera are presented, by taking Takapoto atoll (Tuamotu archipelago, French Polynesia) as a study site. Monthly sampling of several parameters representative of bivalve environment and food (water temperature, salinity, mineral and organic matter, proteins, lipids and carbohydrates, chlorophyll a and phaeopigments) confirm and increase knowledge of the Takapoto lagoon hydrobiology. | Six batches of king scallop juveniles of different origins and obtained either by collection in their natural habitat (Saint-Brieuc, Scotland, Ireland), or by hatchery production in Brest in 1981, 1982, 1983, have been sown, at a size of 3 cm, in the roadsted of Brest between 1977 and 1983. | The exploitation of offshore mussel farms is becoming important throughout the world, but monitoring this activity remains a difficult task. Here, we propose a specific method for this purpose. A total of 140 long-lines were monitored on a mussel culture ground in the French Mediterranean Sea during four experimental surveys deploying multibeam sonar devices mounted on poles (Reson Seabat 6012, 455 kHz) on small boats. | L'expérimentation mise en œuvre dans l'étang de Thau a permis de comparer, à une échelle la plus proche possible de celle des exploitations commerciales, les performances zootechniques d'une population d'huîtres triploïdes à celles d'une population témoin diploïde d'écloserie ainsi qu'à celles d'une population issue du captage naturel. Le gain moyen de poids total sur 6 mois entre février et septembre 1998 est respectivement de 100, 70 et 62 g pour les huîtres triploïdes, diploïdes témoins d'écloserie et diploïdes naturelles, confirmant la nette supériorité de croissance des huîtres triploïdes. | Growth of the black-lip pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera var. cumingi, was studied for an annual cycle, from March 1997 to April 1998, in the lagoon of Takapoto atoll (Tuamotu archipelago, French Polynesia). Growth in shell and in tissue were measured every 15 days on three successive age groups of cultivated pearl oysters. At the same time, hydrobiological parameters (temperature, salinity, oxygen concentration, suspended particulate matter), known to have influence on bivalve growth, were followed each week during culture. | In situ clearance rate (CR) and biodeposition of the black pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera, were followed during several field experiments from 1996 to 1998 in the lagoon of Takapoto. Serial measurements of total particulate matter (TPM, mg l(-1)), particulate inorganic matter (PLM, mg l(-1)), and particulate organic matter (POM, mg l(-1)) were related to meteorological conditions, especially wind speed. As a general case, POM and PLM increased with wind speed. Nevertheless, PLM increased faster than POM so that the organic content (OC, %) of the TPM decreased progressively when wind speed increased. | We present a cathodoluminescence (CL) study of growth layer deposition in the shell of the oyster Crassostrea gigas. CL is based on the physical properties of lattice-bound manganese (Mn2+), which is the main activator in calcium carbonate. Our study involved chemical marking by immersing individuals in seawater to which manganese chloride had been added, and subsequent reading of the shell with CL microscopy coupled with numeric treatment of microphotographs; CL emission was analyzed using a scanning electron microscope coupled to a spectrometer. | Le programme de sélection de l'huître plate a été initié en 1985 par des pathologistes de la Tremblade. La sélection ne portait que sur le seul critère de tolérance des huîtres plates au parasite Bonamia ostreae et correspondait plus à un outil pour étudier divers aspects de la parasitose qu'un un programme d'amélioration génétique visant la relance de la culture de l'huître plate. | We grew Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas) in a French Mediterranean coastal breeding area, the Thau lagoon, to examine the influence of stocking density on their growth and quality (i.e. condition index and biochemical composition). | Japanese scallop Patinopecten yessoensis J. is one of the few examples of successful restocking of a marine population. Juveniles collected (on natural grounds) in almost unlimited number are used either for hanging or bottom culture. | The efficiency of the scallop dredge used in baie de St Brieuc (Britany) has been directly determined by divers swimming along the track marks left on the bottom. Results, concerning essentially year class two, show that efficiency and damage caused by the dredge on scallops are highly variable according to nature of the sea bed. On smooth grounds, the average efficiency is 67% and the average percentage for severely damged scallops is 2% ; on rough grounds, theses percentages are respectively 30% and 17%. | Since 1973 some pectinides spat collection experiments have been conducted by the Fishery team of the Brittany Oceanology Centre, on two deposits exploited by commercial fishing: the roadsted of Brest and especially the St-Brieuc Bay The experiment carried out in 1973 was the first French attempt on this group of species and the results have been very encouraging: although the technology used was rudimentary, the best collectors enabled the collection of 30 to 50 king scallops (Pecten maximus) each and of 6,000 to 8,000 scallops (Chlamys varia and Chlamys opercularis).
