This paper addresses the question of the eventual control of barium concentration in seawater by an equilibrium with barite. For this, we have used a new thermodynamic model to compute the barite saturation index of ocean waters, mainly from GEOSECS data. Our results show that equilibrium between barite and seawater is reached in a number of places: cold surface waters of the Southern Ocean, waters at intermediate depths (2000-3500 m) in the Pacific, deep waters (2000-3500 m) of the Gulf of Bengal. The only samples for which a slight barite supersaturation is found are the surface waters at GEOSECS station G89 in the Weddell Gyre. Besides these locations, the rest of the world's oceans is undersaturated, as was established by Church and Wolgemuth [Church,... |

Phytoplankton nitrogen uptake is studied in relation to the biomass and structure of phytoplankton community in the Atlantic and Indian sectors of the Southern Ocean. Two scenarios of seasonal evolution of uptake regime and phytoplankton community structure are described. The first scenario includes the Marginal Ice Zone areas of the Weddell Sea and adjacent areas where a predominantly nitrate based, diatom dominated assemblage, thriving in a stable water column at the beginning of the season was transformed into a mainly ammonium based, flagellate dominated assemblage, towards the end of the season. The change in phytoplankton community structure was caused by selective grazing by large grazers and reduced stability of the water column and the shift in... |

The residual flow lines of the Belgian coast are more or less parallel to the coast except in the area where the northeasterly flowing watermass coming from the Channel encounters the southwesterly-oriented Scheldt outflow. The result is a residual hydrodynamical front with, at the northern side, a less saline estuarine watermass, and at the southern side a more saline marine watermass. From the steady-state salinity pattern, diffusion coefficients perpendicular to the residual flow were deduced; they ranged from 21 to 108 m².s-1.The steady-state profiles of dissolved metals versus salinity indicate a dilution effect in the coastal-estuarine watermass and almost constant concentration in the marine watermass. Offshore fluxes of Cd,... |

The intensity of past biological activity can be correlated with the occurrence of suspended and sedimented barite (BaSO4). To date, there is a lack of information on the processes controlling the production of pelagic barite. During the EPOS-2 cruise (November-December 1988), situated in the Scotia Sea-Weddell Sea Confluence, suspended water samples were taken for analysis of total Ba by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) and for scanning electron microscopy-electron microprobe (SEM-EMP).The vertical profiles of particulate barium generally show a Ba maximum between 200 and 500 m. SEM-EMP investigation on Scotia-Weddell Sea Confluence profiles provide a possible explanation for the origin of this... |

In this study we have investigated air-sea exchanges in the Belgian coastal area located in the Southern Bight of the North Sea. Since 1980 the tropospheric aerosol contents for the trace elements Cd, Cu, Mn, Pb, Zn and for the reference elements Al , Fe, Na have been monitored on an intermittent basis from a maritime sampling platform (Light-Vessel West-Hinder; position: 51°23.5'N- 2°21.5'E, fig. 1). During 1981 sampling campaigns at sea were paralleled by sampling campaigns on land, in the coastal area (natural reserve De Blankaert, located at 20 Km inland), in order to allow for a better evaluation of the specific source or sink role of the sea. No major source of pollution exists between the maritime and the continental sampling sites. During these... |
