Do defaults matter? Willingness to pay to avoid GM food vis-à-vis organic and conventional food in Denmark, Great Britain and Spain AgEcon
Costa-Font, Montserrat; Tranter, Richard B.; Gil, Jose Maria; Jones, Philip J.; Gylling, Morten.
The introduction and communication of new technologies in the food industries has given rise in the past to some scientific uncertainty that hampers informed choice. Here we draw upon the case of Genetically Modified (GM) technology and, in particular, on different types of GM food, to investigate consumers’ behavioural reactions to GM food as well as their willingness to pay for avoiding GM food in three EU countries, Denmark, GB and Spain in 2007. Our unique contribution lies in that our empirical analysis concerns two food products containing different characteristics. In particular, we compare consumers’ reactions to cornflakes (to represent a processed food) and tomatoes (to represent a 'fresh' food) juxtaposed with GM and conventionally produced...

Farmer’s objectives as determinant factors of organic farming adoption AgEcon
Kallas, Zein; Serra, Teresa; Gil, Jose Maria.
Our paper seeks to assess the decision to adopt organic farming practices. More specifically, we use Duration Analysis (DA) to determine why farmers adopt organic farming and the timing of adoption. We extend previous studies by including farmers’ objectives, risk preferences and agricultural policies as covariates in the DA model. The Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) is used as a multi-criteria decision-making methodology to measure farmers’ objectives. The empirical analysis uses farm-level data collected through a questionnaire to a sample of vineyard holdings in the Spanish region of Catalonia. Farmers’ objectives are found to influence the conversion decision. Moreover, farmers who are not risk averse are more prone to adopt organic farming. Results...

The Determinants of Survival of Spanish Consumers Fronting the BSE Crisis AgEcon
Radwan, Amr; Gil, Jose Maria; Serra, Teresa.
The impact of food scares on meat consumption has been traditionally investigated by estimating food demand systems using aggregated time series. Only a few have considered micro data but none of them has tried to quantify consumers’ reaction to food scares and the speed of such reactions. In this study we apply duration analysis techniques with the aim of analysing the effect of different explanatory variables on both the risk of reducing beef consumption and the timing of this reduction. Our results suggest that the maximum hazard occurs during the few months after the occurrence of the food crisis and then the reducing consumption hazard tend to diminish. Moreover, economic factors such as prices and income could be considered as the most determinant...

The Impact of Price Intervention Policies to Improve Dietary Quality in Spain AgEcon
Gil, Jose Maria; Angulo, Ana Maria; Mtimet, Nadhem.
Many commentators have claimed that farm subsidies have contributed significantly to the “obesity epidemic” by making fattening foods relatively cheap and abundant and, symmetrically, that taxing “unhealthy” commodities or subsidizing “healthy” commodities would contribute to reducing obesity rates. This paper makes three contributions. First, we review evidence from the literature on the impacts on food consumption and obesity resulting from subsidies applied in the past to production or consumption of farm commodities. Second, we develop and present new arguments and preliminary evidence on the impacts of past government investments in agricultural R&D on food consumption and obesity—through research-induced increases in agricultural productivity and...

The Impact of Avian Influenza on Vertical Price Transmission in the Egyptian Poultry Sector AgEcon
Hassouneh, Islam; Radwan, Amr; Serra, Teresa; Gil, Jose Maria.
In recent years, health risks have received increasing attention among consumers and created interest in analysing the relationship between food scares, food consumption and market prices. One of the most relevant and recent food scares is the avian influenza that has had important effects not only on human and animal health, but also on the economy. We assess effects of avian influenza on price transmission along the Egyptian poultry marketing chain. Although Egypt has been one of the most affected countries by avian influenza, this article is the first attempt to understand this food scare’s impacts on Egyptian poultry markets. In doing so, a multivariate smooth transition vector error correction model (STVECM) is applied to monthly poultry price data....

The impact of dynamic technical inefficiency on investment decision of Spanish olive farms AgEcon
Lambarraa, Fatima; Stefanou, Spiro E.; Gil, Jose Maria.
Spain occupies a first ranking position in worldwide production and exportation for olive oil and table olives. Such position is enforced by the positive evolution of investment demonstrated by an increase of approximately 5% of area dedicated to this cultivation during the last 6 years. This study analyzes Spanish olive sector investment decision taking into consideration the technical efficiency as a relevant element that could impact that decision by integrating the real option approach and a dynamic stochastic frontier model. This analysis has been applied to a 158 Spanish olive farms using FADN data set. The results show that the technical inefficiency persistence parameter is fairly low to unity, which means that small technical inefficiency is...

The effect of long-run identification on impulse-response functions: An application to the relationship between macroeconomics and agriculture in Tunisia AgEcon
Ben Kaabia, Monia; Gil, Jose Maria; Chebbi, Houssem Eddine.
The objective of this paper is to analyse some of the most relevant relationships among macroeconomic variables and the agricultural sector in Tunisia. Three alternative models are specified and estimated: a VAR in levels, an unrestricted Vector Error Correction Model (VECM), and a Restricted VECM in which long-run relationships among the relevant variables are identified. In all models short-run dynamics are analysed through the use of Generalised Impulse Response Functions. Results indicate that alternative model specifications generate different short-run dynamics. Long-run identification seems to be a necessary condition for obtaining consistent economic results.

MARKET SEGMENTATION AND WILLINGNESS TO PAY FOR ORGANIC PRODUCTS IN SPAIN AgEcon
Gil, Jose Maria; Gracia, Azucena; Sanchez Garcia, Mercedes.
In recent years, consumer concerns on environmental and health issues related to food products have increased and, as a result, the demand for organically grown production has grown. Higher costs of production and retailer margins generate a gap between real prices and those that consumers are willing to pay for organic food. In this article, consumer willingness to pay for organic food in two Spanish regions is analyzed. Markets in both regions are segmented considering consumers lifestyles. Results indicate that consumers concerned about healthy diet and environmental degradation are the most likely to buy organic food, and are willing to pay a high premium. Organic attributes are easily identified in perishable products as the premium consumers...

Local Polynomial Fitting and Spatial Price Relationships: Price Transmission in the EU Markets for Pigmeat AgEcon
Serra, Teresa; Gil, Jose Maria; Goodwin, Barry K..
We apply nonparametric methods to assess price transmission processes within the EU pig markets. We compare results derived from nonparametric regressions with those obtained using alternative nonlinear threshold models. Results show that nonparametric regressions support the parametric results. However, parametric techniques often suggest a higher degree of price transmission than that implied by threshold models.

The analysis of irreversibility, uncertainty and dynamic technical inefficiency on the investment decision in Spanish olive sector AgEcon
Lambarraa, Fatima; Stefanou, Spiro E.; Gil, Jose Maria.
The purpose of this paper is the evaluation of the investment decision under uncertainty and irreversibility allowing for long run inefficiency. The analysis has been applied to a 158 Spanish olive farms using FADN data set. A real option approach has been used to analyse the decision to invest under uncertainty and irreversibility, and a dynamic stochastic frontier model has been developed to estimate the long run technical efficiency and it persistence. The results show that the technical inefficiency persistence parameter is fairly low to unity, which means that small technical inefficiency is transmitted to the next time period. The olive groves investment is irreversible and characterized by uncertainty on price and discount rate. An increase of...

Análisis de la demanda de alimentos en España considerando el impacto de la dieta sobre la salud AgEcon
Angulo, Ana Maria; Mtimet, Nadhem; Gil, Jose Maria.

Factors Explaining the Consumers' Willingness-to-Pay for a "Typical" Food Product in Spain: Evidence from Experimental Auctions AgEcon
Akaichi, Faiçal; Gil, Jose Maria.
A random nth price experimental auction is used to elicit the willingness to pay (WTP) a premium for the locally produced and high quality white bean "Mongeta Ganxet" (MG) (Catalonia - Spain). Moreover, we are interested in testing the effect on the WTP of providing different pieces of information to participants. Results indicate that the provision of information on organoleptic, nutritional and cooking characteristics of the MG as well as their tasting has increased participants' WTP. Also, providing reference prices of substitutive products (both conventional and alternative high quality white beans) positively stimulates the premium participants are willing to pay for the MG. Finally, the level of consumption, the degree of knowledge about the product...

Consequences of BSE on Consumers' Attitudes, Perceptions and Willingness to Pay for Certified Beef in Spain AgEcon
Angulo, Ana Maria; Gil, Jose Maria.
The BSE crisis has increased consumers' concerns on beef safety. Product quality systems and controls have been reinforced. Traceability certification and quality labels have been developed to communicate consumers the safety characteristics of the labelled beef and recover consumption. As a consequence, production costs have increased, which have been ultimately transmitted to consumer prices. The objective of this paper is to develop a conceptual model able to analyse main factors influencing consumers' willingness-to-pay for certified beef. A three-equation recursive model is jointly estimated. Results indicate that income, level of beef consumption, the average price consumers paid for beef and beef safety perception are main determinants of Spanish...

Transmision de precios en los mercados regionales de ovino en Espana AgEcon
Boshnjaku, L.; Ben Kaabia, Monia; Gil, Jose Maria.

MODELING THE IMPACT OF FOOD SAFETY INFORMATION ON MEAT DEMAND IN SPAIN AgEcon
Radwan, Amr; Gil, Jose Maria; Ben Kaabia, Monia; Serra, Teresa.
This paper analyses the impact of food safety information about the 'mad-cow' crisis on the demand for different types of fresh meat and fish in Spain. The theoretical model explicitly incorporates food safety information in the consumers' utility function, from which demand equations are obtained. Two alternative functional forms have been considered, the standard AIDS and the Generalized Almost ideal Demand System (GAIDS) in order to overcome the problem of incorporating demand shifters in the traditional AIDS model. The food safety information has been incorporated into the demand function through a weighted information index built on the basis of the published news related to the mad-cow disease in the most popular Spanish newspaper. The comparison of...

Asymetric Price Transmission in the Spanish Lamb Sector AgEcon
Ben Kaabia, Monia; Gil, Jose Maria.
This paper aims to investigate the non-linear adjustments of prices between farm and retail prices in the lamb sector in Spain. The methodology used is based on the multivariate approach to specify and estimate a three-regime Threshold Autoregressive Model. Results indicate that in the long-run price transmission is perfect and any supply or demand shocks are fully transmitted along the marketing chain. In the short-run, price adjustments between the farm and the retail levels are asymmetric and are representative of a demand-pull transmission mechanism. On the other hand, retailers benefit from any shock, whether positive or negative, that affects supply or demand conditions.

The EU demand for imports of virgin olive oil AgEcon
Ben Kaabia, Monia; Gil, Jose Maria.
This paper has analysed the import demand for virgin olive oil in the EU and more precisely in the Italian market, as it concentrates more than 80% of EU imports, aiming to determine the relative position of Mediterranean EU and non-EU countries exports and their degree of substitutability or complementarity. The methodology used is based on the specification of a Threshold Almost Ideal Demand System in which special attention has been paid to the stochastic properties of the series involved. In an empirical context, the paper has aimed to provide a set of import demand elasticities that can be useful in trade models. Results point to Spain as the leader in the Italian virgin olive oil market. It is expected that this position will be maintained in the...

Farms' Technical Inefficiencies in the Presence of Government Programs AgEcon
Serra, Teresa; Zilberman, David; Gil, Jose Maria.
We focus on determining the impacts of government programs on farms’ technical inefficiency levels. We use Kumbhakar’s (2002) stochastic frontier model that accounts for both production risks and risk preferences. Our theoretical framework shows that decoupled government transfers are likely to increase (decrease) DARA (IARA) farmers’ production inefficiencies if variable inputs are risk decreasing. However, the impacts of decoupled payments cannot be anticipated if variable inputs are risk increasing. We use farm-level data collected in Kansas to illustrate the model.

Risk perceptions, risk attitudes and the formation of consumer acceptance of Genetically Modified (GM) food AgEcon
Costa-Font, Montserrat; Gil, Jose Maria.
The influence of risk perception and risk attitudes in the process of accepting genetically modified (GM) food is often ignored, and particularly whether both constructs (latent variables) have a combined effect in explaining consumer acceptance. Similarly, the inclusion of organic product standards juxtaposed to GM food is unknown. This paper attempts to shed some light on this question by examining the decision making process through the use of structural equation modeling (SEM). We use survey data from Spain and a set of theoretical constructs that allow us to identify independent mechanisms underlying individuals’ risk decision making. Our results suggest that the conceptualized model captures the decision making process, and that both perceptions and...
