Comparison of sprinkler droplet size and velocity measurements using a laser precipitation meter and photographic method NWISRL
King, B.A.; Winward, T.W.; Bjorneberg, D.L..
Kinetic energy of water droplets has a substantial effect on development of a soil surface seal and infiltration rate of bare soil. Methods for measuring sprinkler droplet size and velocity needed to calculate droplet kinetic energy have been developed and tested over the past 50 years, each with advantages, disadvantages, and limitations. A laser precipitation meter and photographic method were used to measure droplet size and velocity from an impact sprinkler at three pressures and one nozzle size. Significant differences in cumulative volume drop size distributions derived from the two measurement methods were found, especially at the highest operating pressure. Significant differences in droplet velocities were found between measurement methods as...

Evaluation of Potential Runoff and Erosion of Four Center Pivot Irrigation Sprinklers NWISRL
King, B.A.; Bjorneberg, D.L..
The operational characteristics of center pivot sprinklers are well documented but few studies have been conducted to evaluate the effects that operating characteristics of a particular sprinkler have on infiltration, runoff, and erosion for specific soil types. The objective of this study was to evaluate potential runoff and erosion from four commercial center pivot sprinklers on three widely distributed, south central Idaho soils. A modified commercial irrigation boom system was used to emulate center pivot irrigation on experimental runoff plots. Sprinklers used in the study were: 1) Nelson R3000 with brown plate, 2) Nelson R3000 with red plate, 3) Nelson S3000 with purple plate, and 4) Senninger I-Wob with standard 9-groove plate. Based on...

Evaluation of In-Row Plant Spacing and Planting Configuration for Three Irrigated Potato Cultivars NWISRL
Tarkalson, D.D.; King, B.A.; Bjorneberg, D.L.; Taberna, J.P..
Research studies have shown that planting potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) in a bed configuration can improve water movement into the potato root zone. However, plant spacing recommendations are needed for potatoes planted in a bed configuration. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of in-row plant spacing and planting configuration on yield of Russet Burbank, Russet Norkotah, and Ranger Russet potatoes under sprinkler irrigation. For the three varieties, the effect of in-row plant spacing (three spacing treatments) for each planting configuration (4 row conventional ridged-row [4RC], 5 row bed [5RB], and 7 row bed [7RB]), and the effect of planting configuration on total tuber yield, U.S. No. 1 tuber yield, percent No. 1 tubers, average size...

Droplet Kinetic Energy from Center-Pivot Sprinklers NWISRL
King, B.A.; Bjorneberg, D.L..
The kinetic energy of discrete water drops impacting a bare soil surface is generally observed to lead to a drastic reduction in water infiltration rate due to soil surface seal formation. Under center-pivot sprinkler irrigation, kinetic energy transferred to the soil prior to crop canopy development can have a substantial effect on seasonal runoff and soil erosion. In the design of center-pivot irrigation systems, selection of sprinklers with minimum applied kinetic energy could potentially minimize the seasonal runoff and erosion hazard. The size and velocity of drops from common rotating spray-plate sprinklers center-pivot sprinklers with flow rates of approximately 40 and 20 L/ min were measured using a laser in the laboratory. The data were used to...

Potato cultivar response to seasonal drought patterns NWISRL
Stark, J.C.; Love, S.; King, B.A.; Marshall, J.M; Bohl, W.H.; Salaiz, T..
The ability to minimize potato yield and quality losses due to drought can be greatly improved by understanding the relative responses of different cultivars to seasonal variations in water supply. To address this need, we initiated a two year field experiment to determine the responses of the six potato cultivars to different seasonal drought patterns, including 1) full season irrigation at 100% ET, 2) irrigation at 100% ET terminated during late bulking , 3) full season irrigation at 70% ET , 4) irrigation at 70% ET terminated during late bulking , and 5) a gradual reduction in irrigation from 100% ET during tuber initiation through early bulking, to 70% ET during mid-bulking, and 50% ET through late bulking. Center pivot simulator for evaluating system design and management effects on infiltration and erosion NWISRL
King, B.A.; Bjorneberg, D.L..
A 4-wheeled commercial irrigation boom was modified for use in investigating center pivot design and management effects on infiltration, runoff and erosion of specific soil types. The center pivot simulator used a hydraulic winch attached to the front of a tractor for mobilization and controlled travel speed. A 3 inch diameter 300 ft drag hose is used to supply water to the center pivot simulator. The center pivot simulator was used to conduct two studies to investigate infiltration, runoff and erosion differences of common commercially available center pivot sprinkler types on a Portneuf silt loam soil. Sprinklers used in the first study were: 1) Nelson R3000 with brown plate, 2) Nelson R3000 with red plate, 3) Nelson S3000 with purple plate, and...

Infiltration characteristics of bare soil under sequential water application events NWISRL
King, B.A.; Bjorneberg, D.L..
The marked reduction in infiltration rate caused by formation of a soil surface seal is a well known phenomenon but often ignored in infiltration models. The effect sequential water application events have on infiltration rate and soil surface seal formation has rarely been investigated. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect sequential water application events have on the infiltration rate of a Portneuf silt loam soil with and without water droplet impact. The Portneuf silt loam soil developed a soil surface seal that reduced infiltration rate both with and without droplet impact on the bare soil surface. When the soil surface was protected during the first rainfall event, drying the soil did not increase infiltration rate for...

Transient Soil Surface Sealing and Infiltration Model for Bare Soil Under Droplet Impact. NWISRL
King, B.A.; Bjorneberg, D.L..
The marked reduction in infiltration rate caused by formation of a soil surface seal due to water droplet impact on bare soil is a well known phenomenon but is rarely considered in infiltration models, especially under center pivot irrigation. Water application rates under center pivot irrigation commonly exceed infiltration rate, especially near the end of the system lateral. This can lead to off-site runoff and erosion, but more importantly results in field-scale non-uniform water infiltration that can substantially reduce water use efficiency of these irrigation systems. The objective of this study was to develop a sealing soil infiltration model that considers transient soil seal formation on a 30 min or less time scale and can potentially be...

Laser precipitation monitor for measurement of drop size and velocity of moving spray-plate sprinklers NWISRL
King, B.A.; Winward, T.W.; Bjorneberg, D.L..
Sprinkler drop size distribution and associated drop velocities have a major influence on sprinkler performance in regards to application intensity, uniformity of water application, wind drift, evaporation losses and kinetic energy transferred to the soil surface. Sprinkler drop size measurements are either labor intensive or require use of expensive equipment, both of which limit data availability. Sprinkler drop velocity data are more limited than drop size data due to measurement difficulty and associated cost of labor and instrumentation. An economical laser instrument commercially marketed for real-time rainfall measurements as a Laser Precipitation Monitor (LPM) was used to measure drop size and velocity from ten moving spray-plate type...

Drought tolerance selection of sugarbeet hybrids NWISRL
Tarkalson, D.D.; Eujayl, Imad A.; Beyer, Werner; King, B.A..
Increased water demands and drought have resulted in a need to indentify crop hybrids that are drought tolerant, requiring less irrigation to sustain yields. This study was conducted to assess differences in drought tolerance among a group of genetically diverse sugarbeet hybrids. The study was conducted over three consecutive growing seasons (2008-2010) at the USDA Northwest Irrigation and Soils Research Laboratory in Kimberly, Idaho on a Portneuf silt loam soil (coarse-silty, mixed, superactive, mesic Durinodic Xeric Haplocalcid). Drought tolerance was evaluated by measuring sucrose yield production of six breeding hybrids of Klein Wanzlebener Saatzucht (KWS SAAT AG) and one commercial hybrid (Betaseed Inc.) under six water input treatments. Hybrid...

Effects of Planting Configuration and In-Row Plant Spacing on Photosynthetic Active Radiation Interception for Three Irrigated Potato Cultivars NWISRL
Tarkalson, D.D.; King, B.A.; Bjorneberg, D.L.; Taberna, J.P, Jr..
Research studies have evaluated the production of potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) grown in conventional and bed planting configurations. However, intercepted photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) from these planting configurations has not been quantified. A study conducted in 2008 and 2009 quantified and compared the intercepted PAR from three planting configurations (four row conventional ridged-row [4RC], five row bed [5RB], and seven row bed [7RB]), and from different plant spacings of cvs Russet Burbank, Russet Norkotah, and Ranger Russet potatoes under sprinkler irrigation. A second study was conducted in 2007 to evaluate the relationship between PAR and leaf area of Russet Norkotah and Russet Burbank for the three planting configurations. These...

Aggregate tensile strength and friability characteristics of furrow and sprinkler irrigated fields in Southern Idaho NWISRL
Koehn, A.C.; Lehrsch, G.A.; Busscher, W.J.; Evans, D.E.; King, B.A.; Stieneke, D.L.; Sojka, R.E..
Agricultural crops grown in southern Idaho are furrow or sprinkler irrigated. Therefore, the soil experiences several wetting and drying cycles each growing season that can contribute to changes in aggregate tensile strength and friability. The objective of the research was to evaluate the influence of irrigation on soil structural properties. Four furrow irrigated fields were sampled at the top and bottom of the field, in the furrow and on the bed location of the furrow. Five sprinkler irrigated fields were sampled at 0-5 and 5-15 cm depth and at the top and bottom of the field. Results from this study indicate that differences in tensile strength in furrow irrigated fields were only evident soon after irrigation; otherwise, there were few differences in...

Soil and Nutrient Losses from Small Sprinkler and Furrow Irrigated Watersheds in Southern Idaho NWISRL
Bjorneberg, D.L.; King, B.A.; Nelson, Nathan; Lee, J.H..
Sediment and associated nutrients flowing to the Snake River with furrow irrigation runoff and unused irrigation water have been a concern in the Twin Falls irrigation tract in southern Idaho. Converting furrow irrigated fields to sprinkler irrigation is one practice that has been promoted, and received financial assistance, to reduce sediment loss. Five small watersheds (330 to 1480 acres) with 10 to 70% sprinkler irrigation were monitored from 2005 to 2008 to determine if converting to sprinkler irrigation reduced sediment and nutrient losses from these watersheds. Eliminating runoff from furrow irrigated fields by converting to sprinkler irrigation will reduce sediment and nutrient losses from fields. However, there were no significant correlations...
