Chemical contaminants (trace metals, persistent organic pollutants) in albacore tuna from western Indian and south-eastern Atlantic Oceans: Trophic influence and potential as tracers of populations ArchiMer
Chouvelon, Tiphaine; Brach-papa, Christophe; Auger, Dominique; Bodin, Nathalie; Bruzac, Sandrine; Crochet, Sylvette; Degroote, Maxime; Hollanda, Stephanie J.; Hubert, Clarisse; Knoery, Joel; Munschy, Catherine; Puech, Alexis; Rozuel, Emmanuelle; Thomas, Bastien; West, Wendy; Bourjea, Jerome; Nikolic, Natacha.
Albacore tuna (Thunnus alalunga) is a highly commercial fish species harvested in the world's Oceans. Identifying the potential links between populations is one of the key tools that can improve the current management across fisheries areas. In addition to characterising populations' contamination state, chemical compounds can help refine foraging areas, individual flows and populations' structure, especially when combined with other intrinsic biogeochemical (trophic) markers such as carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes. This study investigated the bioaccumulation of seven selected trace metals – chromium, nickel, copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg) and lead – in the muscle of 443 albacore tunas, collected over two seasons and/or years in the...

Biomonitoring along the french coastline: could mercury isotopic composition indicate a temporal change in hg reaching the coastal zone? ArchiMer
Briant, Nicolas; Chouvelon, Tiphaine; Brach-papa, Christophe; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Savoye, Nicolas; Sonke, Jeroen; Knoery, Joel.
Mercury (Hg) is a natural element toxic to all living organisms. Its ocean biogeochemical cycle is dominated by atmospheric deposition, which human activities contribute to disrupt signi cantly, and to a lesser extent by riverine discharge. This element is bioamplifed and bioaccumulated in marine food webs. since mercury concentrations in some coastal animal species of high trophic level approach sanitary thresholds, understanding biogeochemical processes and mechanisms leading to these elevated Hg concentrations becomes important. The stable isotopic geochemistry of metal is indeed a very promising way to trace processes and transfers from one mercury biogeochemical reservoir to another (Sonke and Blum, 2013). The stable isotopes of Hg undergo...

Environmental stress in the pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas during gametogenesis : role of herbicides? ArchiMer
Burgeot, Thierry; Quirion, Sophie; Quiniou, Francoise; Knoery, Joel; Soletchnik, Patrick; Gagnaire, Beatrice; Renault, Tristan; Osada, M.; Geret, F.; Communal, P. Y.; Jadas-hecart, A.; Gagne, F..
In the Atlantic French coast, significant mortalities were observed in oyster communities during gametogenesis. These deaths possibly result from the cumulative effects of various stressors such as seasonal temperature variations, pesticide application and the release of contaminants from the resuspension of sediments. A field survey, based on aquaculture conditions at 15 and 70 cm from the sediment bed with genetically-resistant (R) and -sensitive (S) lines, showed a stress condition. Significant weight loss was observed during May 14th through June 10th for both R and S lines. On one hand, the levels of the egg yolk vitellin in females were decreased at May 14th for both R and S lines. On the other hand, a significant increase in vitellin production was...

Tellurium behaviour in a major European fluvial–estuarine system (Gironde, France): fluxes, solid/liquid partitioning and bioaccumulation in wild oysters ArchiMer
Gil-díaz, Teba; Schäfer, Jörg; Dutruch, Lionel; Bossy, Cécile; Pougnet, Frédérique; Abdou, Melina; Lerat-hardy, Antoine; Pereto, Clément; Derriennic, Hervé; Briant, Nicolas; Sireau, Teddy; Knoery, Joel; Blanc, Gerard.
Tellurium (Te) is a technology critical element (TCE) with largely unknown environmental behaviour, especially in continent-ocean interface systems. The unknown behaviour results from the lack of studies in aquatic environments and from analytical challenges limiting the determination of its naturally low (ultra-trace) environmental levels. We performed a comprehensive study of Te in the Lot–Garonne–Gironde fluvial–estuarine system to better understand seasonal variations, solid/liquid partitioning (Kd), gross fluxes, estuarine dynamics, and transfer to wild oysters at the estuary mouth. A temporal record (2014–2017) of dissolved (Ted) and particulate (Tep) Te concentrations at five sites in the Lot–Garonne River system shows little differences between...

Particles transformation in estuaries: Fe, Mn and REE signatures through the Loire Estuary ArchiMer
Thibault De Chanvalon, A.; Metzger, E.; Mouret, A.; Knoery, Joel; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Brach-papa, Christophe.
During their transfer across estuaries, particles endure numerous cycles of deposition-resuspension accompanied by several redox oscillations. These oscillations are likely to modify the particles content of redox sensitive metals such as Fe, Mn and two rare earth elements (REE): Ce and Eu. The present paper focuses on the fate of particles originating from the Loire Estuary by the study of chemical composition changes of both total and ascorbate-extracted phases. Transformations of particles buried in the sediment are estimated from sediment cores sampled in an estuarine intertidal mudflat Changes affecting particles that are transferred to the ocean are evaluated by comparing the composition of suspended particulate matter (SPM) from riverine time series...

A French environmental specimen bank of marine bivalves : archive of trace chemical contamination ArchiMer
Claisse, Didier; Knoery, Joel.
Since 1979, the French Marine Monitoring network (RNO) has been regularly collecting blue mussels and oysters at some 100 characterized sites along the French shore. The bivalves are used as quantitative bio-indicators of coastal chemical contamination. Since 1981, the collected samples have been stabilized and archived in a sample bank. The sample collection is thus a continuously lengthening record of coastal contamination. Bivalves are collected by the Ifremer coastal laboratories. In order to eliminate their faeces and pseudofaeces, molluscs are depurated for 24 hours in decanted sea water from the sampling area. They are then sized, shucked from their shell and frozen in pools of 20-50 animals. At the Dépt of Biogeochemistry and Ecotoxicology, the...

Interactions between Volatile Reduced Sulfur Compounds and Metals in the Seine Estuary (France) ArchiMer
Cozic, Amandine; Viollier, E; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Knoery, Joel; Rozuel, Emmanuelle.
Concentrations of volatile hydrogen sulfide (H2S), carbonyl sulfide (OCS), methane thiol (MeSH), dimethyl sulfide (DMS), and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) in the Seine estuary (France) were investigated in spring 2005 using samples collected from the first meter beneath the surface. Levels of dissolved metals (Ag, Cd, Cu, Zn, Ni, Co, Pb), suspended particulate matter, and particular organic carbon were also assessed. Maximum concentrations were 0.80 nM for H2S, 0.64 nM for OCS, 3.06 nM for MeSH, 11.06 nM for DMS, and 1.18 nM for DMDS, and different features were observed for the five volatile reduced sulfur compounds (VRSCs). Experiments were conducted to determine silver-VRSC conditional stability constants. Major interactions were observed between H2S and...

Manganese, iron and phosphorus cycling in an estuarine mudflat, Loire, France ArchiMer
Thibault De Chanvalon, A.; Mouret, A.; Knoery, Joel; Geslin, E.; Peron, O.; Metzger, E..
The sampling of surface sediment from two sites of a mudflat of the Loire Estuary during four contrasting seasons has led to new information about geochemical cycling under transient diagenesis fuelled by flood deposition. Based on stocks of reactive iron-oxides and manganese-oxides (ascorbate-extracted) and pore water concentrations, the progressive evolution of flood deposits is described. Three major steps are observed: at first, there is no manganese, iron and phosphorus release into pore water within the flood-deposited layer. Then, during a period of approximately 1 month, Mn oxides are consumed while the dissolved Mn concentration increases. Simultaneously, the Fe oxide-rich layer from flood deposition prevents (or at least limits) phosphorus...

Assessment of the metal contamination evolution in the Loire estuary using Cu and Zn stable isotopes and geochemical data in sediments ArchiMer
Ferreira Araujo, Daniel; Ponzevera, Emmanuel; Briant, Nicolas; Knoery, Joel; Sireau, Teddy; Mojtahid, Meryem; Metzger, Edouard; Brach-papa, Christophe.
In this work, a multi-elemental approach combining Cu and Zn stable isotopes is used to assess the metal contamination evolution in the Loire estuary bulk sediments. Elemental geochemical data indicate an increase of metal concentrations from the beginning of the industrial period peaking in the 1990s, followed by an attenuation of metal contamination inputs to the estuary. Zinc isotope compositions suggest a binary mixing process between Zn derived from terrigenous material and multi-urban anthropogenic sources. Copper isotope systematics indicate a single natural dominant source represented by weathered silicate particles from soils and rocks. This work demonstrates the applicability of Zn isotopes to identify anthropogenic Zn sources in coastal systems,...

Heat, volume and chemical fluxes from submarine venting: A synthesis of results from the Rainbow hydrothermal field, 36 degrees N MAR ArchiMer
German, C. R.; Thurnherr, A. M.; Knoery, Joel; Charlou, Jean-luc; Jean-baptiste, P.; Edmonds, H. N..
High-temperature hydrothermal activity occurs in all ocean basins and along ridge crests of all spreading rates. While it has long been recognized that the fluxes associated with such venting are large, precise quantification of their impact on ocean biogeochemistry has proved elusive Here, we report a comprehensive study of heat, fluid and chemical fluxes from a single submarine hydrothermal field. To achieve this, we have exploited the integrating nature of the non-buoyant plume dispersing above the Rainbow hydrothermal field, a long-lived and tectonically hosted high-temperature vent site on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Our calculations yield heat and volume fluxes for high-temperature fluids exiting the seafloor of similar to 0.5 GW and 450 Ls(-1), together...

MarsiteCruise was undertaken in October/November 2014 in the Sea of Marmara to gain detailed insight into the fate of fluids migrating within the sedimentary column and partially released into the water column. The overall objective of the project was to achieve a more global understanding of cold-seep dynamics in the context of a major active strike-slip fault. Five remotely operated vehicle (ROV) dives were performed at selected areas along the North Anatolian Fault and inherited faults. To efficiently detect, select and sample the gas seeps, we applied an original procedure. It combines sequentially (1) the acquisition of ship-borne multibeam acoustic data from the water column prior to each dive to detect gas emission sites and to design the tracks of...

The Loire River is one of the largest river systems in Western Europe and a major source of continental inputs to the marine environment in the Bay of Biscay. Its catchment area drains agricultural and industrial zones and its estuary is increasingly urbanized. Even if the Loire River is not considered as a highly polluted system, studies have shown estuarine Pb contamination due to industrial inputs and combustion of leaded gasoline until the mid 1990’s. A retrospective study, based on the analysis (Pb levels and isotopic composition) of mussel samples collected by the French mussel watch program (RNO/ROCCH) has highlighted this contamination and its trend between 1985-2005 (Couture et al., 2010). This poster furthers the work initiated by Couture et al....
