The role of agroecology in sustainable intensification Organic Eprints
Pearce, Bruce; Lampkin, Nicolas; Leake, Alastair; Padel, Susanne.
This paper explores how agroecological approaches can contribute to sustainable intensification. There is an ongoing debate on how we can produce the required levels of food the world needs on existing farmland, while minimising environmental impacts. The ‘sustainable intensification’ concept has been proposed to reconcile these two objectives. In parallel, there is a growing interest in how agroecological approaches can contribute to the world’s food security. We reviewed the evidence for a large range of agroecological practices and made a close comparison between conventional agricultural systems and integrated agriculture, organic farming and agroforestry, comparing on a range of factors. Overall, the study found that agroecological approaches can...

Impact of agricultural liberalisation on the relative importance of price premiums for the profitability of organic farming Organic Eprints
Sanders, Jürn; Stolze, Matthias; Lampkin, Nicolas.
In the literature, impressive evidences can be found with respect to the importance of price premiums for the absolute and relative profitability of organic farms. However, depending on the agricultural support framework, the relative economic importance of price premiums varies considerably. Model results presented in this paper suggest that the relative importance is likely to decline, if producer prices decline substantially and more support payments are transferred directly to farmers as envisaged in the framework of currently discussed liberalisation reforms in Switzerland or the EU.

Organic supply chain collaboration: a case study in eight EU countries Organic Eprints
Naspetti, Simona; Lampkin, Nicolas; Nicolas, Philippa; Stolze, Matthias; Zanoli, Raffaele.
This study aims at contributing to a better understanding of the linkage between supply chain performance and possible performance improvement with respect to food quality and safety. Therefore, the paper addresses the question whether the level of collaborative planning and close supply chain relationships could help improve quality and safety of organic supply chains. The study was conducted as a part of the multi-disciplinary EU-wide survey of organic supply chains, carried out in 8 European countries. In this paper we report the results of the study regarding the structures and performance of six different organic supply chains in these eight European countries: milk (CH, UK), apples (DE, CH), pork (UK, NL), eggs (DE, UK), wheat (HU, IT, FR) and...

Impact of the WTO liberalisation on organic farming in Switzerland Organic Eprints
Sanders, Jürn; Lampkin, Nicolas; Stolze, Matthias.
Although a number of policies measures have been implemented since the 1990s with the aim to improve the competitiveness of the farming sector, Swiss farms still produce at much higher costs than their colleagues in neighbouring countries. For this reason, future liberalisation policies such as the WTO Doha Round are a major challenge for agriculture in Switzerland. Against this background, the potential impact of current WTO trade talks has been analysed on land use, livestock husbandry and the financial performance of organic and non-organic farms in Switzerland using the sector-based farm group model CH-FARMIS. According to the model results, land use and the number of farm animals change in line with projected commodity prices. Due to considerable...

In consideration of: • the lack of organic juveniles reported by some MS; • the restriction on the movement of live animals between countries and regions based on the Council Directive (EC) No 88/20062; • the reluctance of farmers to introduce on their farms animals which could be unsuitable for the local (geographical) environment (e.g. genetic or population traits, resistance to different diseases, growth performances, reproductive cycle, behavioural characteristics, etc.); and • the lack in the Commission Regulation (EC) No 889/20083 of specific organic rules for managing the life cycle stage between the hatching and the weaning of juveniles, the Group supports the use of non-organic juveniles, for on-growing purposes, when organic aquaculture...

Ethical concerns associated with organic food in Europe Organic Eprints
Padel, Susanne; Nicholas, Phillipa; Jasinska, Aleksandra; Lampkin, Nicolas.
Values are at the centre of organic farming. The paper examines ethical concerns that are important to consumers, producers and other stakeholders in relation to organic farming practice and how this relates to current standards and the four IFOAM principles of health, ecology, fairness and care. Most concerns can be categorised under four headings but important issues are cross cutting. Currently, standards cover, both directly and indirectly, only a part of ethical values associated with organic food and agriculture but many producers aim to deliver on a broader range.

The role of multi-target policy instruments in agri-environmental policy mixes Organic Eprints
Schader, Christian; Lampkin, Nicolas; Müller, Adrian; Stolze, Matthias.
The Tinbergen Rule has been used to criticise multi-target policy instruments for being inefficient. The aim of this paper is to clarify the role of multi-target policy instruments using the case of agri-environmental policy. Employing an analytical linear optimisation model, this paper demonstrates that there is no general contradiction between multi-target policy instruments and the Tinbergen Rule, if multi-target policy instruments are embedded in a policy-mix with a sufficient number of targeted instruments. We show that the relation between cost-effectiveness of the instruments, related to all policy targets, is the key determinant for an economically sound choice of policy instruments. If economies of scope with respect to achieving policy targets...

The Role of Agroecology in Sustainable Intensification Organic Eprints
Lampkin, Nicolas; Pearce, Bruce; Leake, Alastair; Creissen, Henry; Gerrard, Catherine L; Gerling, Robbie; Lloyd, Sofie; Padel, Susanne; Smith, Jo; Smith, Laurence; Vieweger, Anja; Wolfe, Martin.
‘Sustainable intensification’ is now often used to describe the future direction for agriculture and food production as a way to address the challenges of increasing global population, food security, climate change and resource conservation. While sustainable intensification is interpreted by some to relate to increasing production, with more efficient but potentially increased use of inputs and technology, there is also a need to consider environmental protection, including the conservation and renewal of natural capital and the output of ecosystem services. There is a growing consensus that sustainable intensification should not only avoid further environmental damage, but actively encourage environmental benefits. This includes addressing issues of...

Modellansatz und -konzeption zur quantitativen Politikfolgenabschätzung für den biologischen Landbau Organic Eprints
Sanders, Jürn; Lampkin, Nicolas; Matthias, Stolze; Peter, Midmore.
Although organic farming has expanded significantly in Germany and Switzerland in the last decade, there is still a lack of a sectoral policy model that is able to analyse the impact of policy measures on organic farming. Equilibrium models and econometric models are considered for various reasons as rather inappropriate, whereas optimisation models in form of a sector-consistent farm group model seem to be a promising model approach. The bottom-up approach of this type of model makes it possible to analyse the impacts of policy measures on farm incomes and volume of production of organic and conventional farms at farm type, regional and sectoral level.
