Excision of sclerocorneal limbus in dogs and resulting clinical events: study of an experimental model Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Brunelli,A.T.J.; Vicenti,F.A.M.; Oriá,A.; Campos,C.F.; Doria Neto,F.A.; Laus,J.L..
The consequences of complete removal of the sclerocorneal limbus epithelium were evaluated, as well as the model for such, in which n-heptanol and superficial keratectomy were used. The association of n-heptanol and keratectomy allowed a complete excision of stem cells. Moreover, the destruction of these cells led to significant tectonic alterations that could be employed as a feasible model for clinical experimentation of corneal transplantation.

A- and B-modes echobiometry in cataractous and noncataractous eyes of English Cocker Spaniel dogs Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Silva,M.L.; Martins,B.C.; Ribeiro,A.P.; Souza,A.L. Groszewicz de; Laus,J.L..
A- and B-modes ultrasonographic changes in the thickness of various structures of the eyeball in male and female English Cocker Spaniel dogs with and without nondiabetic cataracts were evaluated. Sixteen dogs with cataracts (32 eyes) and seven normal dogs (14 eyes) older than eight years were selected. A- and B-modes ultrasonography was performed with a 10MHz transducer. Data was statistically evaluated by one way ANOVA. Mean and standard deviations of various ocular structures for dogs with and without cataracts were, respectively, anterior chamber: 3.041±0.828mm, 3.373±1.040mm; lens: 6.817±1.117mm, 7.062±0.477mm; vitreous: 10.056±0.754mm, 9.523±0.705mm; and axial length: 19.909±1.103mm, 19.958±1.050mm. Ocular measurements between right and left eyes,...

Microbiological profile of donor corneas stored for tectonic transplantation purposes in rabbits Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Kobashigawa,K.K.; Martins,B.C.; Massoli,M.C.B.; Ishizawa,T.H.; Schocken-Iturrino,R.P.; Brooks,D.E.; Laus,J.L..
This study aimed to evaluate the microbiota of donor rabbit corneas stored for tectonic transplantation purposes. Swabs from both corneas of 20 rabbits were carefully collected and submitted to microorganism isolation and identification. After this first swab collection, rabbits were euthanized for reasons other than this project and the eyes were enucleated. The corneas were collected and stored to compose the cornea tissue bank. Corneas were stored in a 0.3% tobramycin solution at -20ºC. After 30 days, the corneas were thawed at room temperature and removed from the antibiotic. New swabs were obtained from the corneas and submitted to microorganism isolation and identification. Gram positive organisms were predominant in the rabbit corneal flora before...

Effects of timolol maleate, levobunolol and apraclonidine on intraocular pressure, pupil size, blood pressure and heart rate in beagles Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Padua,I.R.M.; Ribeiro,A.P.; Padua,P.P.M.; Guimarães,P.J.; Silva,M.L.; Piso,D.Y.T.; Martins,B.; Aldrovani,M.; Semolin,L.M.S.; Camacho,A.A.; Laus,J.L..
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in intraocular pressure (IOP), pupil size (PS), blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR), and ECG variables (Pms wave PmV, PR interval, QRS complex, RMV wave and QT intervals) over time during the instillation of 0.5% timolol, 0.5% levobunolol and 0.5% apraclonidine in clinically normal dogs. Ten adult beagles were used. Baseline values were measured at 8a.m., 2p.m. and 8p.m., for three consecutive days. A waiting period of 10 days between the administrations of each drug was established. For 15 consecutive days, the drug being tested was instilled in one eye of each dog twice a day (7a.m. and 7p.m.). The parameters were evaluated at the aforementioned times on days 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15. Data were...

A new surgical technique to treat corneal perforations using amniotic membrane and surgical adhesive Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Pontes,K.C.S.; Borges,A.P.B.; Eleotério,R.B.; Frazão,A.C.N.; Machado,D.P.D.; Reis,E.C.C.; Sepúlveda,R.V.; Duarte,T.S.; Laus,J.L..
The objectives of this study were to compare surgical techniques and the effects of using n-butyl 2-cyanoacrylate and bovine amniotic membrane to repair perforated lesions in corneas. Penetrating keratoplasty was performed in sixty New Zealand White rabbits under general anesthesia. Group 1 (G1) was treated with n-butyl 2-cyanoacrylate, group 2 (G2) received a fragment of amniotic membrane through the anterior chamber and application of n-butyl 2-cyanoacrylate over the lesion, group 3 (G3) was treated with the same technique as G2 with the addition of an amniotic membrane bandage covering the cornea and sutured in the limbus region, and group 4 (G4) was treated with an amniotic membrane sutured to the lesion and an amniotic membrane bandage sutured in the...

Amastigota forms resembling Leishmania sp. on corneal ulceration in a dog: case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Brito,F.L.C.; Alves,L.C.; Maia,F.C.L.; Albuquerque,A.R.; Ortiz,J.P.D.; Laus,J.L..
One dog with visceral leishmaniasis is reported presenting cutaneous lesions, cachexia, and corneal ulceration. Parasitological and serological diagnoses were performed by exam of contents of the aspirative punction of the bone marrow and by immunofluorecence, respectively. Amastigota forms resembling Leishmania sp. were visualized by citology.

Microalterations in the third eyelid gland of dogs with keratoconjunctivits sicca secondary to distemper Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Brito,F.L.C.; Silva Júnior,V.A.; Maia,F.C.L.; Pereira Junior,J.R.; Laus,J.L..
Keratoconjunctivitis sicca is characterized by qualitative or quantitative abnormalities in the aqueous component of the tear film and is frequent in dogs with distemper. Twenty-eight third eyelid glands of end-stage dogs that died from distemper were analyzed by light microscopy. Keratoconjunctivitis sicca was diagnosed based on ophthalmic findings regarding alterations in the ocular surface and by the Schirmer tear test. The excised glands were fixed in 10% buffered formalin and processed for embedding in paraffin. The blocks were cut into 4µm sections and the sections were stained with hematoxylin-eosin and Masson's trichrome. Analysis revealed tubuloacinar gland atrophy, thickening of connective tissue, and mild to intense inflammatory exudation mainly...
