UNDERSTANDING CONSUMERS' PERCEPTIONS TOWARD BIOTECHNOLOGY AND LABELING AgEcon
Hine, Susan E.; Loureiro, Maria L..
Risk perceptions about biotechnology and genetically modified (GM) foods drive the choices made by many consumers. In this paper, we address two important issues; namely, consumer preferences for mandatory labeling of products using biotechnology, as well as consumer response toward three different types of genetically modified processes (biotechnology applications to increase the nutritional content of potatoes, increase potato flavor, and a decrease in pesticide use). We identify socio-demographic characteristics that affect consumer preference for mandatory labeling as well as the support level that might be associated with biotechnology techniques that could improve upon potato characteristics identified as important by the consumer.

LOCAL COOPERATIVES' EVALUATION OF BUSINESS INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES AgEcon
Hine, Susan E.; Fulton, Joan R.; Loureiro, Maria L.; Vandeburg, Jennifer M.; McNamara, Kevin T..
Agricultural cooperatives have been restructuring, by way of mergers, acquisitions, joint-ventures, and strategic alliances, to increase efficiencies to remain competitive in a changing business environment. The research evaluating the reorganization of cooperatives has revealed that less than one-half of the restructured businesses are financially successful. There is the potential to significantly influence the future health of the cooperative business sector if, first, insights can be gained concerning the factors being considered by cooperative managers when making restructuring decisions and, second, extension education programs can be adapted to meet the greatest need. In this study we examine: (a) what methods of valuation cooperatives are using...

DISCOVERING NICHE MARKETS: A COMPARISON OF CONSUMER WILLINGNESS TO PAY FOR A LOCAL (COLORADO GROWN), ORGANIC, AND GMO-FREE PRODUCT AgEcon
Loureiro, Maria L.; Hine, Susan E..
Demand for value-added products is highly segmented among different types of consumers. In this paper, we assess consumer preferences for local, organic, and GMO-free potatoes in order to discover their potential niche markets. We identify socio-demographic characteristics that affect consumer preferences and compare the effects of different attributes on consumers' willingness to pay. Results suggest that the attribute "Colorado-Grown" carries a higher premium than organic and GMO-free attributes.

ANALYZING FARM PARTICIPATION DECISIONS IN AGROTOURISM ACTIVITIES IN NORWAY: SOME WELFARE IMPLICATIONS AgEcon
Loureiro, Maria L.; Jervell-Moxnes, Anne.
The aim of this paper is to assess the role played by socio-demographic factors, the financial situation of the farm household, as well as the productive orientation and physical location of the farm on the adoption of agro-tourism activities in Norway. Agro-tourism activities in Norway can be classified mainly into two groups: a) renting of fishing and hunting rights, and b) renting of rooms on the farm, huts, cabin, and provision or direct sell of food to travelers. Results indicate that factors such as the size and the location (rural or semi-rural) of the farm play a statistically significant and more important role on the decision of renting fishing and hunting rights than on the development of other agro-tourism activities on the farm. On the...

A CHOICE EXPERIMENT MODEL FOR BEEF ATTRIBUTES: WHAT CONSUMER PREFERENCES TELL US AgEcon
Loureiro, Maria L.; Umberger, Wendy J..
This paper reports the main findings obtained from a U.S. consumer choice experiment regarding perceptions of food safety and meat attributes, and to the extent to which these attitudes translate into willingness-to-pay (WTP) for labeled ribeye steaks. The results indicate that USDA food safety inspection labels, labels indicating that the steak is tender, or the ability to trace back the animal to the farm are more important to consumers than country of origin labeling.

The Impact of Protest Responses in Choice Experiments AgEcon
Barrio, Melina; Loureiro, Maria L..
Not much attention has been given to protest responses in choice experiments (CE). Using follow-up statements, we are able to identify protest responses and compute welfare estimates with and without the inclusion of such protest responses. We conclude that protest responses are fairly common in CE, and their analysis affects the statistical performance of the empirical models. In particular, when the sample is corrected by protests, our results come from utility consistent models. Thus, future choice experiments should consider the role of protest responses as contingent valuation studies have done.

Dealing with Preference Uncertainty: A Mixture Model Approach AgEcon
Loureiro, Maria L.; Loomis, John B..
In the current paper, we compare alternative approaches to incorporating uncertainty into the statistical analysis of dichotomous choice responses. In doing so, first we employ previous modelling techniques that included uncertainty of preferences, and secondly we compare the obtained results with those coming from a novel approach here developed, a finite mixture model. The finite mixture model is a very flexible framework used to deal with preference uncertainty. Our case study uses data gathered in the Prestige oil spill valuation study from Spain.

INTERVIEWER EFFECTS ON THE VALUATION OF GOODS WITH ETHICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ATTRIBUTES AgEcon
Loureiro, Maria L.; Lotade-Manje, Justus.
This paper investigates the impact of interviewer effects on willingness to pay (WTP) estimates. Face-to-face surveys were conducted with two interviewers. Both interviewers used a transcript and conducted the survey at the same location and at same time. We found that responses to the WTP questions differ across eco-labeled products and by interviewer. This interviewer effect is particularly relevant when we analyze the impact on WTP estimates for eco-labeled products grown in countries associated with the origin of one of the interviewers.

REPUTATION AND STATE COMMODITY PROMOTION: THE CASE OF WASHINGTON APPLES AgEcon
Quagrainie, Kwamena K.; McCluskey, Jill J.; Loureiro, Maria L..
A dynamic multiple-indicator multiple-cause (MIMIC) framework was used to estimate the latent variable reputation with price premiums for Washington apples and attributes that covered the period July 1996 to November 1999. A maximum likelihood two-stage approach was employed. For comparison purposes, a hedonic regression was also estimated. Results from the first stage of the estimation procedure in the MIMIC reputation model suggest that price premiums are good indicators of reputation. The indicator coefficients, also called factor loadings, imply that the estimated reputation variable is common to the five indicators chosen and that the measurement of reputation is not likely to be obscured by a wide diversity in the indicators. The common factor...

Los factores determinantes del paso de las explotaciones de la leche a la carne en la Cornisa Cantabrica: analisis empirico para una comarca del interior de Galicia AgEcon
Alvarez, Alfonso Ribas; Iglesias, Edelmiro Lopez; Loureiro, Maria L..

MARKETING COLORADO POTATOES AS A VALUE-ADDED PRODUCT: A CASE STUDY AgEcon
Hine, Susan E.; Loureiro, Maria L.; Meyer, Susan E..
Potato producers in Colorado (and nationwide) have been facing a continued downward trend in potato commodity prices. In an attempt to increase demand for potatoes, these growers had Colorado State University (CSU) researchers perform a market study regarding the viability of marketing a value-added potato. A survey was performed which asked consumers to identify important potato characteristics, their willingness to pay for these characteristics, and what might prompt them to purchase more fresh or processed potatoes in the future. This paper discusses the results and recommendations that CSU made to the Colorado potato producers.

Mapping of Forest Biodiversity Values: A Plural Perspective AgEcon
Nunes, Paulo A.L.D.; Ojea, Elena; Loureiro, Maria L..
The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment is built on a conceptual framework that links biodiversity to the services ecosystems provide to society. Based on this framework, we first compile market and non-market forest valuation studies and, secondly, explore the potential of an econometric modeling exercise by conducting a world wide meta-analysis. This exercise aims to highlight the mapping of biodiversity indicators and assesses their respective role on the valuation exercise. Our results show that biodiversity loss is having an effect on forest ecosystem values. In addition, these effects reveal to be dependent on the type of services and global geo-climatic regions.
