Otolith age estimation by Mojette Transform descriptors and machine learning ArchiMer
Poisson Caillault, Emilie; Vanhelst, Florentin; Charlet, Bastian; Mahe, Kelig.
Age and growth are primordial essential data in stock assessment and management. However, contracting experts for age estimation using calcified pieces costs several million euros annually. Yet, alternative methods exist for fish ageing using the otolith shape (i.e., otolith shape descriptors or Elliptic Fourier Analysis). The goal of this study is to use a new descriptor of the otolith shape with Mojette Transform as an input of k-Nearest Neighbors (k-NN), Random Forest (RF) and Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) classifiers. Mojette Transform is the exact discrete Radon transform used in tomographic reconstruction, image watermarking, or video compression. Its mathematical properties allow reducing the information and having enough redundancy to characterize...

TNPC software - Traitement Numérique des Pièces Calcifiées / Numerical Treatment of Calcified Structures : Développement d’un logiciel dédié à l’analyse des pièces calcifiées : ArchiMer
Fave, Sébastien; Crepin, Emeline; Magalhaes, José Ramos; Ogor, Andre; De Pontual, Helene; Mahe, Kelig.

Growth of an Inshore Antarctic fish, Trematomus newnesi (Nototheniidae), off Adelie Land ArchiMer
Mahe, Kelig; Elleboode, Romain; Loots, Christophe; Koubbi, Philippe.
Dusky rockcod, Trematomus newnesi, is a widely distributed neritic circumpolar Antarctic fish species. We conducted a study on age and growth of Trematomus newnesi in coastal waters of Adélie Land in East Antarctica. A total of 289 specimens were collected in 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2009. They consisted of 122 females, 132 males and 35 immature specimens. Total length (TL) and total weight (W) of these fish ranged from 13.5 to 25 cm and 19.7 to 174 g respectively for females and from 12 to 20.9 cm and from 24.1 to 144.1 g for males. The TL/W relationship was described by the following parameters: a=7.2.10-3 and b=3.127, showing no significant difference between sex (ANCOVA, P<0.05). Fish age was estimated by counting annual growth increments on polished...

Striped red mullet (Mullus surmuletus, Linnaeus, 1758) in the eastern English Channel and southern North Sea: growth and reproductive biology ArchiMer
Mahe, Kelig; Coppin, Franck; Vaz, Sandrine; Carpentier, Andre.
Biological information is necessary for population structure assessment of economically important species. There are no known published studies on the age and reproduction of Mullus surmuletus in the north of the Bay of Biscay. The aim of this study was to estimate growth and reproductive biology of this species in the eastern English Channel and southern North Sea from 1089 individuals, observed from February to December 2004. The length–weight relationship was described by the parameters: a = 3.284.10−6 and b = 3.243, being allometrically positive. Ages were determined from increments of otoliths, used entirely after a burning treatment. Marginal-increment analysis showed an annual periodicity of increment formation. Von Bertalanffy growth equations were...

Bellamy, Elise; Lefebvre, Alain; Mahe, Kelig; De Rafelis, Marc.
The bay of Somme is the first French field of cockles (Cerastoderma edule) with a production amounting to 3000 tons per year on average. In order to improve the stock management, it is necessary to increase our knowledge of this species. This study is looking at the growth of the common cockle. First, was carried out a morphometric analysis of the two left and right valves, which has revealed a perfect symmetry of the shell and has allowed us to establish strong correlations among the morphometric parameters. Then, a chemical marking study has been realized with calcein and manganese in order to obtain the exact growth. Calcein marking has showed a fluorescent stria only for an half hour immersion time at 150 mg.L-1. Likewise, the manganese marking has...

Durieux, Eric; Mahe, Kelig; Labonne, Maylis; Morin, Jocelyne; Brind'Amour, Anik.

There were an exchange and a workshop in 2002 of the sole in the Bay of Biscay. The Otolith Exchange Scheme 2011 was the second exercise for the sole in the Bay of Biscay. 5 readers participated in this exchange from Belgium (2 readers), from France (2 readers) and from UK England (1 reader). The otolith collection (n=120) came from 3 samples realized at the fishing port of La Cotinière during the month of June in 2010. For each otolith, readers had the images of otolith section before and after staining. This analyse presented the results of 8 readers (5 readings of stained otoliths and 3 readings of unstained otoliths). Mean precision of age estimate for individual fish were Coefficient of Variation (CV) of 4.7% and percent agreement to modal age of...

Relationships between age, growth, diet and environmental parameters for anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus L.) in the Bay of Benisaf (SW Mediterranean, west Algerian coast) ArchiMer
Bacha, Mahmoud; Moali, Aissa; Benmansour, Nasr-eddine; Brylinski, Jean-michel; Mahe, Kelig; Amara, Rachid.
Age, growth and diet of anchovy were studied for the first time from samples collected in the Bay of Benisaf (west Algerian coast) during summer (spawning period) and autumn (recruitment period) 2007. Age structure and growth parameters were determined by otolith (sagitta) analyses. The von Bertalanffy growth function fitted to age-length data showed that most of anchovy growth is achieved during the first year of life, suggesting that this stock is primarily supported by the smallest age groups and has a strong dependence on recruitment. There were no significant differences between males and females, and pooled mean parameters were: L infinity = 15.61 cm, k = 0.75 per year and to, -1.32 years. Whatever the age-class anchovy is strictly zooplanktivorous....

Morphological variability of the shape of striped red mullet Mullus surmuletus in relation to stock discrimination between the Bay of Biscay and the eastern English Channel ArchiMer
Mahe, Kelig; Villanueva, Ching-maria; Vaz, Sandrine; Coppin, Franck; Koubbi, Philippe; Carpentier, Andre.
Striped red mullet Mullus surmuletus L. 1758 is an economically important species in the Mediterranean Sea and in the northern Atlantic Ocean, where it is exploited from the Bay of Biscay to the southern North Sea (ICES, 2010). In Atlantic waters, there are two main areas where this species is caught, the Bay of Biscay and the eastern English Channel. This species was initially exploited by the Spanish fleets along the Spanish coast inside the Bay of Biscay. Originally considered as valuable by-catch (Marchal, 2008), the growing exploitation ofM. surmuletus and a conspicuous increase in landings in the English Channel and the southern North Sea by French, English and Dutch fleets have been observed from the 1990s onwards. This was attributed to an increase...

Ecosystem trends: evidence for agreement between fishers' perceptions and scientific information ArchiMer
Rochet, Marie-joelle; Prigent, M; Bertrand, Jacques; Carpentier, Andre; Coppin, Franck; Delpech, Jean-paul; Fontenelle, G; Foucher, Eric; Mahe, Kelig; Rostiaux, Emilie; Trenkel, Verena.
The results of a survey on fishers' perceptions of recent changes in the eastern English Channel ecosystem carried out in 2006 were compared with fishery and bottom-trawl survey data. A hypothesis-testing framework was used, testing the null hypothesis that fishers' statements were true, which permitted evaluation of both agreement and disagreement. Overall good agreement between fishers' statements and scientific data was found, and both sources suggested that the fish community in the Channel is undergoing large changes, among which are decreases in some commercially important species; in addition, a number of human pressures impact the ecosystem. Fishers had an accurate perception of changes and their time-frames, but not necessarily of their causes....

Mahe, Kelig; Elleboode, Romain; Bellamy, Elise.

Are red mullet efficient as bio-indicators of mercury contamination? A case study from the French Mediterranean ArchiMer
Cresson, Pierre; Bouchoucha, Marc; Miralles, F.; Elleboode, Romain; Mahe, Kelig; Marusczak, Nicolas; Thebault, Herve; Cossa, Daniel.
Mercury (Hg) is one of the main chemicals currently altering Mediterranean ecosystems. Red mullet (Mullus barbatus and M. surmuletus) have been widely used as quantitative bio-indicators of chemical contamination. In this study, we reassess the ability of these species to be used as efficient bio-indicators of Hg contamination by monitoring during 18 months Hg concentrations in muscle tissue of mullet sampled from 5 French Mediterranean coastal areas. Mean concentrations ranged between 0.23 and 0.78 μg g−1 dry mass for both species. Values were consistent with expected contamination patterns of all sites except Corsica. Results confirmed that red mullets are efficient bio-indicators of Hg contamination. Nevertheless, the observed variability in Hg...

Age determination of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) : Results from an otolith exchange between Canada and France ArchiMer
Healey, B.p; Mahe, Kelig; Cossitt, G.; Dufour, Jean-louis; Felix, Jerome; Hicks, H.f.; Hiscock, C.; Schwab, P..
Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) in NAFO subDivision 3Ps are exploited and jointly managed by Canada and France. Assessments of stock status incorporate age determinations from both countries when dis-aggregating total catches into catch-at-age. An otolith exchange was initiated to evaluate the degree of consistency in the age determinations of Canadian and French personnel. Both graphical and statistical analysis clearly indicate differences in interpretation between Canadian and French readers, with ages assigned by Canadian personnel generally being one-year greater than those of participants from France. However, consistency in age determinations was relatively high within Canada and within France.
