Ouisse, Vincent; Fiandrino, Annie; De Wit, Rutger; Malet, Nathalie.

Complementarity of the multidimensional functional and the taxonomic approaches to study phytoplankton communities in three Mediterranean coastal lagoons of different trophic status ArchiMer
Leruste, A.; Villeger, S.; Malet, Nathalie; De Wit, R.; Bec, B..
We used the individual-based multidimensional functional diversity and the taxonomic approaches in a complementary way to describe phytoplankton communities in three coastal lagoons with different eutrophication status in the South of France. We sampled communities during three seasons, i.e., in autumn, spring, and summer. Using classical taxonomy, 107 taxa/morphotypes were identified in the nine communities. The individual-based functional approach allowed grouping these individuals into 20 functional entities according to their values for 5 traits related to trophic adaptations (cell size, mobility, trophic regime, coloniality, and pelagic/benthic life). Some species (e.g., Prorocentrum micans) emerged in multiple functional entities, showing the...

Guide to macrophytes in Languedoc-Roussillon lagoons: identification and monitoring (Poster) ArchiMer
Oheix, Jocelyne; Lauret, Michel; Derolez, Valerie; Malet, Nathalie; Laugier, Thierry.

Malet, Nathalie; Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Haure, Joel.
Japanese oysters previously reared in controlled conditions were replaced into the Marennes Oléron Bay on intertidal oyster parks during 2002 summertime. Kinetics of carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios was followed in 5 organs (digestive gland, gills, mantle, muscle and gonads). Results confirmed excepted significant differences in isotopie signatures between organs and revealed differences in the time required reaching equilibrium with the isotopie signatures of local food sources.

Phosphorus and nitrogen future in eutrophised mediterranean lagoons ArchiMer
Ouisse, Vincent; Fiandrino, Annie; Malet, Nathalie; Munaron, Dominique; Fortune, Martine; Oheix, Jocelyne; Baleux, Maeva; Lagarde, Franck; Le Noc, Sandrine; De Wit, Rutger.
Increased nitrogen and phosphorus inputs from watersheds, especially since the 1960s with the increased anthropogenic activities is recognized as a major cause of environmental degradation of coastal ecosystems. On the Mediterranean coast, lagoons are particularly affected by the eutrophication leading to significant changes in ecosystem structure, functioning and services. Since 2000, the “Région Languedoc-Roussillon”, the “Agence de l’Eau Rhône Mediterranée & Corse” and Ifremer developed a lagoon monitoring network (RSL) focusses upon eutrophication to assess and monitor status of 24 lagoons of Languedoc-Roussillon and Corsica. Many actions on watershed led to a significant reduction of nutrient inputs. However, the time required to restore these...

Fonctionnement écosystémique de la lagune de Biguglia. Partie 3 : Scénarios écologiques ArchiMer
Pete, Romain; Malet, Nathalie.

Assessment of eutrophication of French Mediterranean lagoons in relation to meteorological interannual variability ArchiMer
Malet, Nathalie; Derolez, Valerie; Laugier, Thierry; Munaron, Dominique; Fiandrino, Annie; Messiaen, Gregory; Fortune, Martine; Souchu, Philippe; Barral, Marc; Daloz, Aurélien; Moragues, Laurent.
Since recent decades, nutrient-related eutrophication, originating from agricultural use of fertilizer and population enhancement, can be considered worldwide as the main disturbance for coastal lagoons. Since coastal lagoons are very shallow and enclosed, their functioning is tightly linked to meteorological conditions. The aim of this study is to compare different rainfall levels and eutrophication response on coastal lagoons of the Languedoc-Roussillon (Western Mediterranean coast), subject to different nutrient loads from their watershed, in order to check the possibility to distinguish the effects of watershed management or rainfall conditions on water quality (waste water treatment plant improvement, decrease of fertilizer spreading).

Malet, Nathalie.
Trophic transfers of particulate organic matter sources to the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas were investigated in the oyster farming bay of Marennes-Oléron for two years. Stable isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen were used to trace the origin and fate of primary production and organic matter inputs into the bay, and to depict trophic transfers to oysters that were experimentally reared according to traditional methods. Characterizing particulate organic matter sources available for oysters utilized a combination of hydrobiological parameters and stable isotope ratios. Processes of food incorporation by oysters were described for five organs such as gills, digestive gland, mantle, muscle and gonads, and were interpreted taking into account...

First steps of ecological restoration in Mediterranean lagoons: Shifts in phytoplankton communities ArchiMer
Leruste, A.; Malet, Nathalie; Munaron, Dominique; Derolez, Valerie; Hatey, E.; Collos, Y.; De Wit, R.; Bec, B..
Along the French Mediterranean coast, a complex of eight lagoons underwent intensive eutrophication over four decades, mainly related to nutrient over-enrichment from continuous sewage discharges. The lagoon complex displayed a wide trophic gradient from mesotrophy to hypertrophy and primary production was dominated by phytoplankton communities. In 2005, the implementation of an 11 km offshore outfall system diverted the treated sewage effluents leading to a drastic reduction of anthropogenic inputs of nitrogen and phosphorus into the lagoons. Time series data have been examined from 2000 to 2013 for physical, chemical and biological (phytoplankton) variables of the water column during the summer period. Since 2006, total nitrogen and phosphorus...

Marine diatoms sustain growth of bivalves in a Mediterranean lagoon ArchiMer
Pernet, Fabrice; Malet, Nathalie; Pastoureaud, Annie; Vaquer, Andre; Quere, Claudie; Dubroca, Laurent.
Carbon stable isotopes and fatty acids were measured in the suspended particulate organic matter (POM) of the Thau lagoon to study its qualitative temporal changes in relation to environmental factors and to identify the food sources of bivalves over a one-yr-cycle in relation to their growth. Reciprocally, the impact of shellfish farming on POM was also studied. Oysters and mussels were sampled and measured for biometry, stable isotopes and fatty acid composition. Water samples were collected at two sites, both inside and outside of the shellfish farming area, to determine concentrations in POM, chlorophyll a (Chl a) and stable isotopes. Carbon isotopes and fatty acids in bivalves reflected seasonal changes in food sources, which varied consistently with...

Low settlement of the pacific oysters Crassostrea gigas in the Thau lagoon reflects competition for space and food ArchiMer
Rayssac, Nathalie; Malet, Nathalie; Pernet, Fabrice.
The objective of this work is to understand why oysters Crassostrea gigas shows low settlement success in the Thau lagoon despite the fact that biomass of adults is elevated and that larvae show normal development in the water column. Our hypotheses are that oysters compete for food or space with other filter-feeders animals such as sponges, ascidians and other bivalves. To test the trophic hypothesis, we analysed the entire settler community harvested on four-month-old collectors deployed in the Thau lagoon during the summer 2009 for stable isotopes and fatty acids. Based on the isotopic, crustacean amphipods and barnacles can be rejected as a potential food competitor of juvenile oysters. However, other bivalves such as Mytilus sp., Anomia sp., and...

Effect of seasonal variation in trophic conditions and the gametogenic cycle on d13C and d15N levels of diploid and triploid Pacific oysters Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Malet, Nathalie; Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Faury, Nicole; Soletchnik, Patrick; Guillou, Gael.
Carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes were investigated in separate organs of diploid and sterile triploid Pacific oysters Crassostrea gigas for 13 mo, together with changes in chemical and isotope composition of suspended matter sampled from an intertidal mudflat within Marennes-Oléron Bay, France. Particulate organic matter (POM) was a mixture of pelagic and benthic material with a predominance of neritic phytoplankton in spring, and resuspended microphytobenthos in summer and autumn. A remarkable shift of +30/00 in d13C was reflected in both diploids and triploids from spring to summer, and further temporal differences were observed amongst their tissues. Seasonal changes in POM d15N were also reflected in oyster tissues, with digestive gland and muscle...
