Bivalve aquaculture transfers in Atlantic Europe. Part A: Transfer activities and legal framework ArchiMer
Muehlbauer, F.; Fraser, Duncan; Brenner, M.; Van Nieuwenhove, K.; Buck, B. H.; Strand, O.; Mazurie, Joseph; Thorarinsdottir, G.; Dolmer, P.; O'Beirn, F.; Sanchez-mata, A.; Flimlin, G.; Kamermans, P..
Intentional transfers of numerous bivalve species have had a long tradition and are commonly conducted along the European Atlantic coast. However numerous studies have concluded that intentional transfer of species for aquaculture purposes is one of the most principal vectors for the introduction of exotic species around the world. Threats due to the transfer and introduction of species have been identified and a range of global and regional agreements, guidelines, standards and statutes to minimize effects have been established. Yet whether such regulations can protect and conserve the marine environment and address economic considerations remains unanswered. This study provides the first overview of bivalve transfer activities for aquaculture purposes...

Mazurie, Joseph; Bouget, Jean-francois; Claude, Serge; Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Langlade, Aime.
Mussel samples have been placed in plastic-mesh bags hung on wood poles (« bouchots »), at 4 locations of a mussel culture area in the bay of Vilaine (South Brittany, France). They have been monitored for one year, from February 2000 to February 2001. The recorded growth have been rather fast (plus 1.2 g per month between April and September), and mortalities moderate (between 15% to 25%), with better results in southern stations, further from the estuary. Among the physico-chemical parameters recorded, the most striking were very low salinities (below 10 g/l) recorded for days, after heavy rains. They provoqued a valve closure of mussels (recorded by a « valvometer »). Some physiological indicators being tested (muscle force and hermeticity) seemed to...

Mazurie, Joseph; Thebault, Anne; Le Mao, Patrick; Veron, Gerard; Tige, Gilbert; Richard, Olivier.

Flassch, Jean-pierre; Barret, Jean; Mazurie, Joseph; Maes, P; Nicolas, J; Noel, Thierry; Paillard, C; Lepennec, M.
A national program started in 1989 to drive researches on Ruditapes philippinarum brown ring disease correlated with a vibrio called P1. The researches have concerned epidemiological surveys on spats and adults, treatment methods, diagnostic techniques, and anatomical and functional studies about the vibrio-clam relations. The transmissions of the disease appeared mainly related to contaminated manila clam seeds, with secondary horizontal propagation. The brown ring formation appeared to be caused by a periostracum deterioration. Taking into account some of these results, an adapted cultural technique including special care of seeds and decreased densities was proposed to the farmers.

Vibrio carchariae, a pathogen of the abalone Haliotis tuberculata ArchiMer
Nicolas, Jean-louis; Basuyaux, Olivier; Mazurie, Joseph; Thebault, Anne.
Since 1997, mass mortality of the abalone Haliotis tuberculata L. has occurred in the natural environment along the French coast. The outbreak of disease started on the south coast of Brittany near Concarneau in 1997, then spread to the north of Brittany (in 1998) and the west coast of Normandy (Golfe de St. Malo in 1999). Between 60 and 80% of the abalone died. In 1999, mortality also affected a land-based abalone farm in Normandy during the summer. At this farm, a Vibrio sp. was isolated in abundance from abalone that had just died. The disease was experimentally reproduced by inoculation or by introducing the pathogen into the surrounding water. This vibrio, identified by genotypic and phenotypic characters, is related to V carchariae. It is similar to...

Gaignon, Jean-louis; Mazurie, Joseph; Loarer, Ronan; Youenou, Gilles.

Rapport de mission International Conference on Shellfish Restoration, 2011, Stirling (Ecosse) ArchiMer
Mazurie, Joseph.
The 14th International Conference on Shellfish Restoration (ICSR) comes this year to the United Kingdom for the first time in its 26 years history. The conference will be held at the University of Stirling in the heart of Scotland and its title and theme will be “Shellfish: our undervalued resource”. The theme of the conference, “Shellfish: our undervalued resource”, reflects the UK perception of shellfish as something that is good to eat, often in upmarket restaurants. Shellfish fisheries and aquaculture are indeed a very important part of the UK economy; shellfish reefs however form an ecosystem that provides myriad benefits (“ecosystem services”) many of which have been lost through acute fishing pressures, disease, pollution and other factors. On a...

Bouget, Jean-francois; Mazurie, Joseph.
This study presents the main results of oyster growth obtained experimentally in 2002 and 2003, in the farming area of Cancale before the leases reorganization of 2004. According to the REMORA monitoring network from 1990 to 2004, the oyster growth in Cancale bay may be characterized by an average annual weight gain (around 30g per year), a rather weak meat content compared to other regional oyster sites, and an exceptional quality of shell (absence of blisters, few Poly do rd). Spatially, the oyster farming area of Cancale shows rather homogeneous performances of breeding, in spite of the muddy southern area. In addition an experimental trial in 2003 allowed to evaluate favourably the potential of the new oyster area of Saint-Benoît : in these...

Use of satellite data to predict shellfish growth ArchiMer
Bacher, Cedric; Thomas, Yoann; Alunno-bruscia, Marianne; Mazurie, Joseph.
The advent of remote sensing in biological oceanography in the 1990s offers a very powerful tool able to capture temporal and spatial changes of chlorophyll-a concentration and temperature at several temporal scales (decadal, inter annual and seasonal), and at local as well as at the oceanic scale. Such data have the advantage over traditional measurements of being inexpensive, spatially extensive, automatically repeated in time and validated. They have been very useful for phytoplankton monitoring in relation to eutrophication in coastal waters and the number of applications in the field of coastal zone management is growing. We present here a real case application to shellfish aquaculture. We assessed the potential for mussel aquaculture in Mont Saint...

Characterization of Cr. gigas oysters mortalities according to the French Ifremer/REMORA monitoring network ; with complements from phytoplankton and meteorogolical data ArchiMer
Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Mazurie, Joseph; Ropert, Michel; Soletchnik, Patrick; Le Coz, Florence.
The wide range of data from the French Ifremer/REMORA network, collected since 1993 allow a global characterization of mortalities of 1-year old and 2-years old cupped oysters Crassostrea gigas, that are cultivated in the main French oyster areas (Fleury et al, 2003), and thus a better understanding of the causes of these mortalities (Ifremer /MOREST project). The average annual mortalities on intertidal sites range from 10 to 20%. Most of the mortalities take place in Spring and Summer. 1-year oyster mortalities occur in Marennes and several sites in Brittany whilst 2-years oyster mortalities occur in the same sites and in baie des Veys (Normandy). In addition, 2-years oyster mortalities appear more variable according to different annual surveys....

Goyard, Emmanuel; Baud, Jean-pierre; Claude, Serge; Le Moine, Olivier; Maurer, Daniele; Mazurie, Joseph; Ruelle, Francois; Vercelli, Catherine.
The Aquaculture Resources Department's mollusc network (REMORA) federates six coastal Ifremer laboratories. Since 1993, REMORA has implemented a unique national protocol to account for the variability in the growth of Pacific oysters farmed in 39 sites within the main production areas, from Normandy to the Mediterranean Sea. In 1995, the goal of the network was expanded to include monitoring of a second age class. To do so, the protocol developed for adults was adapted to monitor juveniles. The data, organised in Excel worksheets with a specific application written in Visual Basic, allows for inter-station and inter-annual comparisons and thereby constitutes a database of interest to oyster farmers, scientists and administrative personnel.

The project “Risco”, supported by the “Pôle Mer” and funded by the Regional Council of Brittany, deals with specific risks of mortality of oysters, Crassostrea gigas, cultivated on the bottom, in a subtidal bay of South Brittany : the bay of Quiberon (56, France). Massive mortalities of oysters were reported in summer 2006 in this bay, exclusively located in the deep muddy area with a positive gradient eastward. A validated biogeochemical model was applied in order to simulate the dissolved oxygen over 2000-2006 : it revealed several episodes of hypoxia, more or less intense according to years, but with the same spatial distribution. This approach proved 2006 to be the most hypoxic year since 2000. The hypoxia was due to a rare conjunction of 3 factors :...

Mazurie, Joseph; Bouget, Jean-francois; Langlade, Aime; Claude, Serge.
This report summarizes a list of husbandry experiments conducted between 2004 and 2007 so as to reduce the summer mortalities of the oyster Crassostrea gigas by farming practices. The Japanese technique so‐called “hardening”, based on nursing the young oysters (less than 1 year‐old) in intertidal areas with high air exposure, is tested and adapted. Significant improvements of survival rates (e.g. 60% survival instead of 40% survival rate) have been obtained by transferring the spat only a few month (between march and june‐july) on “high” inter‐tidal farming plots (up to 40% of mean air exposure time). In such conditions, growth is transiently reduced, but a compensatory growth seems to happen when oysters are transferred back on low concessions. Another...

Modelling spatio-temporal variability of Mytilus edulis (L.) growth by forcing a dynamic energy budget model with satellite-derived environmental data ArchiMer
Thomas, Yoann; Mazurie, Joseph; Alunno-bruscia, Marianne; Bacher, Cedric; Bouget, Jean-francois; Gohin, Francis; Pouvreau, Stephane; Struski, Caroline.
In order to assess the potential of various marine ecosystems for shellfish aquaculture and to evaluate their carrying capacities, there is a need to clarify the response of exploited species to environmental variations using robust ecophysiological models and available environmental data. For a large range of applications and comparison purposes, a non-specific approach based on ‘generic’ individual growth models offers many advantages. In this context, we simulated the response of blue mussel (Mytilus edulis L.) to the spatio-temporal fluctuations of the environment in Mont Saint-Michel Bay (North Brittany) by forcing a generic growth model based on Dynamic Energy Budgets with satellite-derived environmental data (i.e. temperature and food). After a...

Bouget, Jean-francois; Mazurie, Joseph.
