The hyperbenthic Amphipoda and Isopoda of the Voordelta and the Westerschelde estuary OMA
Cattrijsse, A.; Mees, J.; Hamerlynck, O..
Data are reported on the amphipods and isopods taken in a sledge-type hyperbenthos sampler in the subtidal of the Voordelta, a shallow coastal area in the Westerschelde, the last estuary of the delta area (SW Netherlands). More than 300 samples were collected between 1988 and 1991. Two salt marches in the brackish part of the estuary were sampled monthly with a flume net in 1990 and 1991.A total of 46 amphipod species (42 gammarideans, 3 caprellids and 1 hyperiid), 19 of which are new for the area were recorded. The dominant amphipod species in the Voordelta and the marine part of the Westerschelde estuary are Atylus swammerdami and Gammarus crinicornis. Estimated densities of both species are high comparison to these...

Temporal and spatial structure in the hyperbenthic community of a shallow coastal area and its relation to environmental variables OMA
Hamerlynck, O.; Mees, J..
Monthly sampling with a sledge type gear at 24 stations in the shallow coastal area in front of the Dutch Delta (southern bight of the North Sea) shows that high densities of a variety of animals are present in the lower 1 m of the water column: the hyperbenthos. Hyperbenthic community structure is strongly dominated by seasonal fluctuations due to the sequential appearance, high abundance and disappearance of the different species of temporary hyperbenthos. In winter and early spring, when the community is dominated by its permanent residents, spatial patterns emerge. Averaged over the year, these spatial patterns are consistent with the hydrodynamic regime in the system. Sedimentation of silt occurs in the same sheltered areas where the highest biomass...

Changes in the ratio of the sulcus acusticus area to the sagitta area of Pomatoschistus minutus and P. lozanoi (Pisces, Gobiidae) OMA
Arellano, R.V.; Hamerlynck, O.; Vincx, M.; Mees, J.; Hostens, K.; Gijselinck, W..
The Pomatoschistus minutus (Pallas) and P. lozanoi (de Buen) stock of the ebb-tidal delta of the former Grevelingen estuary was sampled monthly from September 1992 to October 1993. Sagittae were extracted and the areas of the sagitta and sulcus acusticus were measured with a digitizer. The frequency response and auditory threshold of these two sympatric goby species were determined from the ratio of the sulcus acusticus area to the sagitta area (S:O ratio). The S:O ratio of P. minutus increased while in P. lozanoi the S:O ratio was constant with increasing standard length. The average S:O ratio of P. lozanoi was significantly higher than that of P....

The hyperbenthos of shallow coastal waters and estuaries: community structure and biology of the dominant species = Het hyperbenthos van ondiepe kustgebieden en estuaria: gemeenschapsstruktuur en biologie van de dominante soorten OMA
Mees, J..
Chapter 1: provides, I believe, a quasi-complete overview of the existing literature on the hyperbenthos. It thus serves as a general introduction to the work presented in this thesis. Studies are situated in space and time and the main structural characteristics of hyperbenthic communities are summarised. Quite some effort is paid to resolve the overriding semantic disagreement which seems to slow down progress in the field. Sampling methodology and the history of hyperbenthic research are reviewed. The role of hyperbenthic animals in marine food webs is briefly touched upon. Chapter 2: describes the hyperbenthic communities of the Voordelta. Twelve locations were sampled monthly at two depths between August 1988 and July 1989.' Three subareas were...

A new species of Gastrosaccus (Crustacea, Mysidacea) from beaches in Madagascar OMA
Wooldridge, T.; Mees, J.; Webb, P..
Gastrosaccus madagascariensis sp.nov. is common in the surfzone of sandy beaches along the east and south coasts of Madagascar. Morphologically, it is characterised by having seven lateral spines along each side of the telson; with spines 2-4 and the penultimate spine being dorso-lateral in origin. One or two spinules are interspersed between the fifth and terminal spines. The fourth exopod segment of pleopod 3 in the male is bulbous, bearing two terminal barbed unequal spines. A robust and naked seta is also present on the same segment in the male.

Voorkomen van het Zuiderzeekrabbetje Rhithropanopeus harrisii (Gould, 1841) in de Westerschelde OMA
Van Damme, P.; Mees, J.; Maebe, S..
Five male specimens of the White-fingered Mud Crab Rhithropanopeus harrisii were collected from the intake screens of the nuclear power station at Doel on December 20th, 1991. These are the first living specimens of this species recorded in the Westernscheldt.

Feeding of the hyperbenthic mysid Neomysis integer in the maximum turbidity zone of the Elbe, Westerschelde and Gironde estuaries OMA
Fockedey, N.; Mees, J..
The diet of the mysid Neomysis integerin the maximum turbidity zone (MTZ) of three European estuaries (Elbe, Westerschelde and Gironde) was investigated in spring 1993. The quality and quantity of the diet were assessed through measurement of the stomach fullness and microscopical analysis of the stomach content combined with image analyses. N. integer was found to be an omnivore which mainly utilizes mesozooplankton and detritus carbon pools. The quality of the diet did not differ between the sexes or between different developmental stages, although smaller individuals consumed fewer items. In all three estuaries the diet was dominated by Copepoda Calanoida (5-10 Eurytemora affinis...
