Merceron, Michel.
The Frêt Pond at Crozon (Finistère) occupies the southwest part of Frêt's cove in Brest's harbour (fig. 1). This 18-hectare pond was isolated from the harbour by the natural accumulation of a mound of pebbles, which was reinforced by rocks so that it could support the D 155 road. At the free end of this mound, a tide mill had been built in the past, and it is through its release channel that water exchanges currently take place between the Frêt pond and Brest's harbour. The pond's catchment area occupies a surface area of 2.70 km2, of which 1.8 km2 are being farmed and 0.5 are forest area (fig. 1). The average flow over the year is estimated at 58 l/s based on a specific flow of 21.4 l/s/km2. It is therefore about 1.8 million cubic metres of fresh water...

Merceron, Michel; Manaud, Francois; Guillaud, Jean-francois; Monbet, Yves.
The commercial port of the city of St-Brieuc currently has a limited capacity. It is only accessible for low-tonnage ships, and for this reason, cargo is not allowed, which is a contributing factor to its current traffic being limited to 450,000 tonnes per year. A significant silting-up of the port is diminishing even more its potential for accepting ships. Its future seems, therefore, threatened. Several studies conducted by the Côtes-du-Nord Chamber of Commerce and Industry have concluded that it is necessary to develop a port with greater capacity, which would stimulate the regional economy. Cargo traffic would then reach 1 million tonnes per year, and St-Brieuc would be accessible to heavier-tonnage coasters and would then follow the current growth of...

Kempf, Marc; Merceron, Michel; Dosdat, Antoine.
French marine fish farming deals with several species: sea bass, sea bream, turbot, trout and salmon. In 1992, 20 M fingerlings and 2600 t of fish were produced, for a turnover of 165 MFF: This very technical activity is developing, but still fragile and risky. Environment protection regulation applied to marine fish farming directly inspires from that in force in fresh water, which comes from the industry: i.e. the so-called "classified installation" regulation, concerning activities likely to produce polluting effluents. It does not really adapt to diluted effluents, like fish growing ones, and still less to marine farming; this is true for parameters like biological oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COB) and, to a lesser extent, for...

Merceron, Michel; Coic, Daniel; Talec, Pascal.
In spring and summer time, green tides outbreaks yearly occur on sandy beaches of the central and southern parts of the bay of Douarnenez. During four years the nitrate loadings of incoming streams were measured during the growth season of the green algae. Every summer the stock of stranded algae as well as those in the very shallow water were quantified. Three streams from the eight investigated provide the most important part of nitrogen loadings. These ones tend to diminish in the course of spring and summer. They are very different from year to year. The observed biomass of algae is also very different according to years (from 120 to 3 400 t), and even from day to day according to the wind direction. However, the southern part of the bay is more...

Merceron, Michel.
The massive number of fish mortalities that occurred in July of 1982 in Vilaine Bay is due to a very pronounced oxygen depletion in the bay's bottom waters. This loss was caused by the chronic fragility of this area, associated with an abnormal weather pattern. The endemism of partial oxygen depletion has been brought to light. The latter could be economically more significant than the anoxia of 1982. Preventative and warning actions have been proposed.

Piriou, Jean-yves; Coic, Daniel; Merceron, Michel.
The coastal marsh of Kervigen is located near by the bay of Douarnenez and its 22 hectares are almost entirely covered by reeds. An experiment was there carried out to assess the nitrogen flux depletion of a small stream, the Kerharo. That one has a 45 km 2 mostly agricultural drainage basin. Due to its nitrate loadings to the next sandy beach, it feeds a green algae (Ulva) proliferation. In order to control its nitrogen fluxes, the stream was partly diverted through a part of the marsh (9 ha), before it was allowed to go back to the main bed. Thus a collapsible weir was set up during several springs and summers, i.e. the growing period of Ulva. The nitrate stripping off the going through flux is within a 30 to 90 % range, that is important (175 kg N03...

Dosdat, Antoine; Kempf, Marc; Merceron, Michel; Paquotte, Philippe.
Aquaculture in France is characterised by great species diversity. Furthermore, traditional activities (farming of marine shellfish and freshwater fish) coexist with still-developing recent ones (marine fish farming, new pratices in shellfish rearing, etc.). Traditional cultures are the main contributors to the tonnage produced and employment generated. Another noticeable point is the importance of the western part of the country, which carries the main part of the production (> 80 %): the Channel Atlantic coast for shellfish, and nearby rivers for freshwater salmonid farming. On the Mediterranean coast, marine fish farming of bass and bream, as well as shellfish production by new methods (mussels on longlines in open waters), are developing. Important...

Complement méthodologique à l'étude d'impact du Légué (Saint Brieuc) ArchiMer
Merceron, Michel.
The project to enlarge the port of Le Légué at St-Brieuc required conducting an environmental impact study. This took place in 1980 and 1981 (Merceron et al). In view of the project's importance and the almost complete absence of baseline ecological studies of this area, it has been necessary to proceed with a rather extensive investigation. In this way, the field studies focused on the following aspects: hydrobiology, benthos, contaminants in the water, the sediment and living matter, Yffiniac marsh, flat fish nurseries. Overall, the impact of the Le Légué port enlargement on the marine environment of the bottom of St-Brieuc's bay seemed to be relatively minor. However a qualification was made concerning the modes of discharge of the planned basin's...

Kempf, Marc; Cadour, Gwenael; Jeanneret, Hélène; Mear, Yan; Miramand, Pierre; Merceron, Michel.
This document is a result of an environmental impact study carried out between 1993 and 1995 on the site of a marine trout culture located in the Harbour of Cherbourg, France. It deals with the solid waste of the farm and concems deposition rate, sediment analysis and chemistry (fine fraction < 63 ~m, organic matter, carbon, nitrogen, copper and zinc), bottom living organisms and underwater video monitoring. The impact observed is very moderate and localised. This is mainly due to the strong d)'TIamics and flushing rate of the site. A seperate volume of the same study deals with dissolved waste and concems the water mass (volume 1 : water and pelagos). (Not controlled OCR)

Kempf, Marc; Merceron, Michel; Nezan, Elisabeth.
Brown water was observed in Camaret Cove, on 27 and 28 September 1994, because of the massive proliferation of a toxic phytoplankton alga. The densities reached by this alga were considerable: from 1.5 million cells per litre at a point far from the coast to 130 million cells per litre at the height of the efflorescence at the bottom of the bay, in the port's waters. The toxicity of this alga caused deaths in the farms of salmonids in cages set up at this site. The SEMII (IFREMERINRA research facility) experimental farm recorded 100% losses (15-20% on 27 September and the entire remaining stock during the night of 27-28 September), which is around 10 tonnes of fario trout and 0.5 tonne of Atlantic salmon. Aside from the economic loss, this represents a...

Merceron, Michel; Bentley, Daniel; Le Grand, Jacqueline; Lamort-datin, Laure; Kempf, Marc.
The environmental impact of a brown trout farm located in the Grande Rade de Cherbourg (Normandy) is reported. During observations the fish stock evolved within the range of 140 to 350 metric tons. Farm influence was researched on water column through hydrochemistry, phytoplankton, faecal bacteria and, on bottom, through grain size, organic matter, metals, macrobenthos. This report only deals with water column. Except ammonia, no hydrological parameter seems to be affected, even near to the net pens. Phytoplankton and coliform bacteria were not altered. An extra concentration of ammonia was detected at some tens meters from the raft, with favourable conditions. But generally it was impossible to observe it unless close to the farming structure, downward...

Couteaux, B; Jegou, Anne-marie; Merceron, Michel; Piriou, Jean-yves.
This report is the first stage of the Inventory of Potential Sites for Aquafarming along the Côtes-du-Nord shoreline. This type of inventory was conducted previously in Seine-Maritime, in Basse-Normandie, in Finistère, and along the central part of the Atlantic coast. This kind of study is generally motivated by two findings: -the growing use of the shoreline area for various activities -the need to set aside suitable sites for the development of aquafarming. In order to make consistent development choices, it is important to know as well as possible the aquafarming potential sites that we have available, their size, their nature, their geographic distribution, as well as the state of the techniques to be implemented. In Brittany itself, a quick...

Merceron, Michel; Jegou, Anne-marie; Couteaux, Bertrand; Piriou, Jean-yves.
Producing the Inventory of Potential Sites for Aquaculture along the Finistère Shoreline was decided by the Département's Regional Council with the goal of integrating aquafarming in the best way possible into the variety of businesses that are based along the coastal zone. Aquafarming, in order for it to exist tomorrow, needs to be taken into account today as far as preservation of sites, and this must be done with two aspects in mind: - land, on shore; - water quality (which implies maritime and land constraints). In this context, the Regional Council has entrusted the Centre National pour l'Exploitation des Océans with a study that will make it possible to define the aquafarming potential of the Finistère shoreline. It was decided to split this study...

During one month in summer of 1985 the courses of ten drifters, dropped at the mouth of Loire and Vilaine Rivers, were monitored. Results show: -the marked influence of wind on the movement of this region's bodies of water, -the possibility of an intrusion of the Loire's waters in Vilaine Bay, -the very likely absence of any influence of the Loire's waters in the bottom waters' anoxia that occurred in Vilaine Bay during the summer of 1982.
