Prostaglandin F-2 alpha (PGF(2 alpha)) is the primary luteolysin in the cow, and luteal endothelin-1 (ET-1) interacts with PGF(2 alpha) during the process of luteolysis. In contrast, a developing corpus luteum (CL) is refractory to exogenous administration of PGF(2 alpha). Thus, the present study was aimed to investigate the functional relationship between ET-1 and PGF(2 alpha) in the mid-CL (PGF(2 alpha)-sensitive) and early-CL (PGF(2 alpha)-refractory). Recent observations suggest that the bovine uterus starts to react to the early embryo immediately after its arrival from the oviduct. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of the early developing embryo on the immune-related gene profile in bovine uterine epithelial cells (BUECs) in vitro, and to further examine the impact of conditioned media (CM), either from embryo-BUEC co-culture or embryo culture alone, on gene expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs).
