Competitiveness of winter wheat stands against weeds: Effects of cultivar choice, row width and drilling direction Organic Eprints
Drews, Sylvia; Juroszek, Peter; Neuhoff, Daniel; Köpke, Ulrich.
The need for competitive crop stands can be regarded as a basic requirement for weed control, potentially reducing the need for direct control measures. One way the crop may suppress weed growth is by the restriction of light through crop shading. As part of the EU-project ²Strategies of weed control in Organic Farming² (WECOF) trials with winter wheat were carried out to evaluate the potential of wheat shading ability as a weed control measure. Factors included were cultivar, row width and drilling direction. Results of the first experimental year are presented.

Das Beispiel Rosenkohl Organic Eprints
Neuhoff, Daniel.

Yield and quality of potato tubers: Effects of different intensity and kind of manuring (biodynamic or organic) Organic Eprints
Neuhoff, Daniel; Schulz, Dirk Gerhard; Köpke, Ulrich.
Biodynamic farming is the oldest organic farming movement in Germany. Since Dr. Rudolf Steiner’s “Course on Agriculture” held in 1924, the number of biodynamic farmers in Germany has grown continuously, with 1,317 farmers currently producing on 47,592 ha. One of the most distinctive aspects of biodynamic farming is the use of the so-called biodynamic preparations, which are applied in homeopathic doses. Biodynamic preparations are supposed to improve plant growth and food quality, minimising natural variations. This paper deals with investigations of influences of these preparations and increased manure application on potato yield and tuber quality. The results are drawn from extensive research on organic potato production carried out by several institutes...

POTENTIAL OF EXTRACTS OF SOME ETHIOPIAN MEDICINAL PLANTS FOR LATE BLIGHT CONTROL IN ORGANIC POTATOES Organic Eprints
Tadesse, Mekuria; Neuhoff, Daniel.
The potential of ethanolic extracts of some common medicinal plants of Ethiopia for control of late blight (Phytophthora infestans) in tomatoes and potatoes has been investigated in vitro and in vivo. The application of several ethanolic plant extracts resulted in a significant inhibition of mycelium growth (0.25% m/v) and an impairment of late blight disease severity in vivo (1% m/v). Extracts from Hagenia abyssinica, Lepidium sativum and Lippia adoensis showed the strongest suppression of mycelium growth. The application of extracts derived from the H. abyssinica gave the highest in vivo bioactivity against P. infestans on tomatoes, but no effect was noted in potatoes under field conditions. The general potential of these extracts for late blight control...

Organic agriculture can and should play an important role in solving future challenges in producing food. The low level of external inputs combined with knowledge on sustainablity minimizes environmental contamination and can help to produce more food for more people without negatively impacting our environment. Organic agriculture not only includes farming as a production practice but it also includes processing, trade and consumption. Nevertheless, Organic agriculture must always evolve to overcome emerging challenges. Science-based knowledge attained through dedicated research is required to strengthen organic food and farming as a means to solve future challenges. In 2010, a global discussion about Organic 3.0 was initiated to address current problems...

Speisekartoffelerzeugung im Organischen Landbau - Einfluß von Sorte und Rottemistdüngung auf Ertragsbildung und Knolleninhaltsstoffe. Organic Eprints
Neuhoff, Daniel.

Organic Eprints
Drews, Sylvia; Juroszek, Peter; Neuhoff, Daniel; Köpke, Ulrich.
A competitive crop stand is a basis requirement for indirect weed control, potentially reducing the need for direct control measures. Efficient light interception by crop canopies can suppress weed growth by shading. As part of the EU-project ″Strategies of weed control in Organic Farming″ (WECOF) weed suppression by crop shading ability were evaluated in winter wheat. Three wheat cultivars with different leaf inclination and height (Greif, Astron, Pegassos) were grown at three row widths (12 cm, 17 cm and 24 cm) and two drilling directions (East-West, North-South) using a three-factorial design. Two field trials in 2000/01 and 2001/02, respectively, were conducted in Hennef, North-Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. No direct weed control measures were...
