The number of described species on the planet is about 1.9 million, with ca. 17,000 new species described annually, mostly from the tropics. However, taxonomy is usually described as a science in crisis, lacking manpower and funding, a politically acknowledged problem known as the Taxonomic Impediment. Using data from the Fauna Europaea database and the Zoological Record, we show that contrary to general belief, developed and heavily-studied parts of the world are important reservoirs of unknown species. In Europe, new species of multicellular terrestrial and freshwater animals are being discovered and named at an unprecedented rate: since the 1950s, more than 770 new species are on average described each year from Europe, which add to the 125,000...

Report on a collecting trip to China, 1984, to study and collect Nepticulidae (Lepidoptera) Naturalis
Driel, J.W. van; Nieukerken, E.J. van.
Introduction At the Department of Animal Systematics and Zoogeography of the Free University Amsterdam the object of study has been already for a number of years the systematics and phylogeny of the microlepidopteran family Nepticulidae. Particularly the species of the western palearctic region have been studied, but also studies on species from New Zealand and Japan have been undertaken. Ideas about the phylogenetic relationships between genera of Nepticulidae are developed. Until now knowledge of Nepticulidae in East Asia, apart from Japan and the Ussuryisk region in the USSR has been negligible because of the lack of material from this part of the world in museum collections. Judging from the distribution of the hostplants in E. Asia the...

Antispila sp. minatore fogliare segnalato in Italia su vite = Antispila sp. a new leafminer of grapes in Italy Naturalis
Baldessari, M.; Angeli, G.; Girolami, V.; Mazzon, L.; Nieukerken, E.J. van; Duso, C..
Two leaf-miner species occur in European vineyards, i.e. Holocacista rivillei (Stainton) (Lepidoptera Heliozelidae) and Phyllocnistis vitegenella Clemens (Lepidoptera Phyllocnistidae). In the summer of 2007, leaf mines similar to those caused by H. rivillei were observed in a vineyard located in north-eastern Italy. However, the first portion of mines (linear tortuous) was lacking and thus the occurrence of a different species was suspected. Larvae were reared in controlled conditions to obtain adults and the latter differed from those of H. rivillei because of their size and wing patterns. Adults belonged to the genus Antispila Hübner, but not to the species of this genus currently known for Italy and Europe. Antispila sp. was detected for the first time...

Nematois australis Heydenreich, 1851 (currently Adela australis; Insecta; Lepiodoptera): proposed presedence over Tinea aldrovandella Villers 1789 Naturalis
Kozlov, M.V.; Nieukerken, E.J. van.
The purpose of this application, under articles 23.9.3 and 81.2.3 of the Code, is to conserve the widely used specific name Adela australis (Heydenreich, 1851) for a common south European fairy moth (family Adelidae) by giving it precedence over the questionable senior synonym Tinea aldrovandella Villers 1789. T. aldrovandella was not used after publication until 1980 when it was mentioned as a possible synonym of A. australis. Since 1980, some, but not all authors have accepted this synonymy.

The Quercus feeding Stigmella species of the West Palaearctic: new species, key and distribution (Lepidoptera: Nepticulidae) Naturalis
Nieukerken, E.J. van; Johansson, R..
The species of the Stigmella ruficapitella group occurring in the Western Palaearctic and feeding on Quercus are reviewed. We recognise 19 species, five of which are described as new: Stigmella fasciata sp. n. on Quercus pubescens from Slovenia, Croatia, Greece and Turkey, S. cocciferae sp. n. on Q. coccifera from Greece, Turkey and Israel, S. kasyi sp.n. from Afghanistan, possibly feeding on Quercus baloot, S. bicuspidata sp. n. from Turkey (host unknown) and S. karsholti sp. n. on Q. canariensis from Tunisia. Stigmella ilicifoliella (Mendes, 1918) comb. n., stat. rev. is removed from synonymy with S. suberivora (Stainton, 1869), it occurs in France, Spain and Portugal, partly sympatric with S. suberivora on Quercus rotundifolia, Q. ilex and Q. suber....

Bucculatrix ainsliella Murtfeldt, a new North American invader already widespread on northern red oaks (Quercus rubra) in Western Europe (Bucculatricidae) Naturalis
Nieukerken, E.J. van; Doorenweerd, C.; Ellis, W.N.; Huisman, K.J.; Koster, J.C.; Mey, W.; Muus, T.S.T.; Schreurs, A..
Bucculatrix ainsliella Murtfeldt, 1905 is for the first time reported from Europe: the Netherlands, Belgium, and adjacent Germany. DNA barcodes confirm its identity. It is the first North American lepidopteranspecies feeding on northern red oak Quercus rubra ever found in Europe, and only the second North American oak-feeding insect found in Europe. The species has regularly been found in the Netherlands and northern Belgium since 2006, and in 2011 also in Nordrhein-Westfalen in Germany, adjacent to the Dutch border, but the earliest records are from the Netherlands, Amersfoort in 1989 and 1990. Early stages, leafmines, and the adult are described, illustrated, and diagnosed against oak-feeding Bucculatrix ulmella Zeller, 1848 and other similar species....

A global phylogeny of leafmining Ectoedemia moths (Lepidoptera: Nepticulidae): exploring host plant family shifts and allopatry as drivers of speciation Naturalis
Doorenweerd, C.; Nieukerken, E.J. van; Menken, S.B.J..
Background: Host association patterns in Ectoedemia (Lepidoptera: Nepticulidae) are also encountered in other insect groups with intimate plant relationships, including a high degree of monophagy, a preference for ecologically dominant plant families (e.g. Fagaceae, Rosaceae, Salicaceae, and Betulaceae) and a tendency for related insect species to feed on related host plant species. The evolutionary processes underlying these patterns are only partly understood, we therefore assessed the role of allopatry and host plant family shifts in speciation within Ectoedemia. Methodology: Six nuclear and mitochondrial DNA markers with a total aligned length of 3692 base pairs were used to infer phylogenetic relationships among 92 species belonging to the subgenus...
