The main objective of this paper is to generate measures of TFP change for the food, beverages, and tobacco industry in the EU. Explicitly taking into account the fact that some of the inputs used in the industry are fixed in the short run, the generated measures of TFP change reflects the dynamic nature of the problem. The second objective is to analyse TFP change into its components and explicitly examine the effect of Research and Development (R&D) effort on TFP growth. Data are collected from EU KLEMS and the OECD Structural Analysis database. The data contain country-level information on output volume, input prices and capital stock, as well as R&D expenditure for the food, beverages, and tobacco industry for the 15 “old” EU Member States.... |

The paper discusses the appropriate functional form and estimation technique for a wildlife production function on the farm level. A random effect model was developed to capture the relationship between wildlife output, management practices, natural conditions and non-observed factors that cause a farm specific management bias. Two wildlife measures were compared: species richness and a wildlife yardstick that enables different species to be weighed on their ecological value. The results show that the farm specific factor has a significant impact on the production of wildlife both in terms of species numbers and in terms of ecological values. Parameter estimates that were similar for the species richness specification were found to vary with the yardstick... |

This paper uses a micro-econometric model to analyse differences in variable profits and economic behaviour between organic and conventional arable farms. Insight in factors underlying these differences is essential in designing policy measures that aim at encouraging the transition to a more sustainable farming practice. The framework is applied to a rotating panel of Dutch conventional and organic arable farms over the period 1990-1999. The results show that the, on average larger variable profit of organic farms is mainly associated with the use of land and technological changes. The shadow price of labour suggests over-use of labour on organic arable farms. Demand for pesticides and supply of output are generally more elastic on organic farms.... |

Input-based dynamic efficiency measures are derived from an adjustment-cost directional distance function approach. A dynamic input directional distance function can be generated from an adjustment-cost technology where the dynamics are explicitly incorporated in the form of the properties of the input requirement sets with respect to the quasi-fixed factors. The properties of the dynamic input directional distance function are inherited from the properties of the technology. The efficiency measures are then applied to a panel data set of Dutch horticulture firms over the period 1991-1995. |

Providing a performance measure of any firm is a crucial issue, not only for the stakeholders of the firm, but also for policy makers, labor unions, and economists. The relevant performance measures should consider the objectives of the firm’s owners. The ownership structure of cooperatives is different from that of investors owned firms, which in principle implies the need of different tools to measure their performance. Typically, however, the performance of cooperatives and investor owned firm is mostly compared using the same approach. In this study, we use Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to compare the performance of dairy cooperatives and investor owned firms in major European dairy producing countries using a traditional approach, which views both... |

Pine wood nematode, B. xylophilus poses a serious threat for the European forest industry. This study applies a quantitative risk assessment to analyze the risk of pine wood nematode in the EU, by estimating the reduction expected within forestry stock available for wood supply and its downstream roundwood market. Spatial analysis is used to join information on climate suitability, host distribution, pest spread and value of assets. Economic impacts are presented spatially on a NUTS-2 scale based on partial budgeting technique and for the EU as a whole based on partial equilibrium modeling. Results highlight the Southern regions of Europe as high risk areas with a total impact on available forestry stock of 19,000 M € after 20 years of an outbreak and no... |
