In Marennes-Oléron, Héral (1986) described the relationship between the annual production and the oysters' biomass over a century. His conclusion is that the drop in the growth of oysters was caused by an "overstorage" considering the trophic capacity of the basin. Moreover, the large intertidal spaces, though providing a great opportunity for mollusc culture, suffer from a large bio-deposition (Sornin 1983) which tends to intensify the sedimentation of the basin. The spatial management of oyster culture could be a key factor for its long-term development. In collaboration with the French Marine Affairs, in charge of the cadastral management, the IFREMER has developed a geographical information system enabling the gathering under the same geographic... |

This Gambas report contains two parts. The summary report (Volume 1) gives an account of the project intervention from May 2000 to December 2003, and a digest of the project's results and deliverables. The comprehensive report (Volume 2) contains the details of the scientific research and the technical results brought about by the project. Besides, a CD/ROM containing all the technical reports, publications and maps generated in the frame of Gambas is available from the coordinator. |

The economie performance of shrimp rearing is govemed by three types of factors a) the environmental conditions prevailing around the farms, b) farmers' zootechnical practise and know how, c) economie management. The Gambas project aims at identifying the relative role played by these parameters in the success or failure of small-scale shrimp farming enterprises of the Mekong delta in Vietnam. It is being conducted by French and Vietnamese partners under the co-leadership of Ifremer and the Nha Trang Institute of Oceanography. |

In order to most benefit from the potential offered by the European marine basins in terms of growth and employment (Blue Growth), and to protect the marine environment, we need to know more about the seafloor. European Directives, such as the MSFD, but also the Horizon 2020 roadmap explicitly called for a multi-resolution full coverage of all European seas including bathymetry, geology and habitats. The present work, following on a suite of past initiatives, has made a big step forward in this direction. It has first boosted the collation of existing maps from surveys by setting up a framework and a procedure to encourage people to submit their maps and data. This resulted in a more attractive EMODnet seabed habitat portal and a snowball effect with more... |

If marine management policies and actions are to achieve long-term sustainable use and management of the marine environment and its resources, they need to be informed by data giving the spatial distribution of seafloor habitats over large areas. Broad-scale seafloor habitat mapping is an approach which has the benefit of producing maps covering large extents at a reasonable cost. This approach was first investigated by Roff et al. (2003), who, acknowledging that benthic communities are strongly influenced by the physical characteristics of the seafloor, proposed overlaying mapped physical variables using a Geographic Information System (GIS) to produce an integrated map of the physical characteristics of the seafloor. In Europe the method was adapted to... |

Marine benthic ecosystems are difficult to monitor and assess, which is in contrast to modern ecosystem-based management requiring detailed information at all important ecological and anthropogenic impact levels. Ecosystem management needs to ensure a sustainable exploitation of marine resources as well as the protection of sensitive habitats, taking account of potential multiple-use conflicts and impacts over large spatial scales. The urgent need for large-scale spatial data on benthic species and communities resulted in an increasing application of distribution modelling (DM). The use of DM techniques enables to employ full spatial coverage data of environmental variables to predict benthic spatial distribution patterns. Especially, statistical DMs have... |

The coastal zone of Charente-Maritime in France has a leading position in oyster culture production. Yet it is being jeopardized by a number of problems such as overstocking, inadequate distribution of culture types, wild stock in excess, and strong siltation processes. Some of these problems result from a lack of communication and realization within the professional community, others due to obsolete management tools. The introduction of geomatics is believed to help provide some answers, besides alleviating the classical task of lease management. This chapter shows how the system was built, the spatial data geo-referenced and linked to administrative data. Examples of queries on the spatial data base reveal some otherwise invisible facts and allow... |

Within the marine environment, the EUNIS classification system attempts to define key environmental drivers that describe natural benthic habitats. The hierarchical nature of the system is initially broad, but becomes increasingly complex at finer biological scales such as communities and species. This project addressed the higher EUNIS levels. Each of the contributing physical parameters were split into categories using threshold values defined with the help of benthic ecologists familiar with the relative influence of such factors on seabed biology. Climatologies were confronted to in situ samples and observations to derive most reliable values. Historic data sets were collated, stitched and harmonised into mosaics which comprehensively covered the area... |
